Things to do in Taunggyi
Sometimes these unpretentious noodle restaurants serve such wonderful food that I never feel the need to find the expensive 'tourist' venues. We went twice and every item brought to our table was excellent. This is a family run place, Shan Home style. Of course we ordered noodle soup - vegetarian, but since tomatoes are grown on the lake - be sure to order the tomato salad. The vegetable tempura was non-greasy. Please be willing to sit and wait for your food, and don't expect things to arrive in any specific order. Prices very reasonable.
Two of the finest meals of my life. Two because I went back the second day for lunch. This is a traditional local restaurant that does not cater to foreigners but my son and I have traveled the Third World and eat at local restaurants without getting sick. We asked our guide what is the best local restaraunt in the area and he took us here. The staff looked at us two tall white Americans and stared when we walked in. Our guide told them we wanted local food and the brought out a semi English Chinese menu and we told our guide Burmese only. What we ordered and ate was a culinary adventure. The stuffed talapia with garlic, ginger, onions, and other spices wrapped in bamboo and steamed was over the top. The tilapia in a tomato curry sauce makes my body yearn for more. Snake fish head soup was spectacular if you don't look at the head. Staff is all family run and fantastic. A must go to place for culinary memories that will last a lifetime. Total cost of meals for everything and tip US 8 dollars!!
Thaifoods/ salad / bbq / Hotpot / Shan traditional foods
I came upon this gem in Nyaung shwe (near Inle Lake). The authentic Thai food here was a refreshing change from all of the Myanmar food I was eating daily during my travels. The place is very clean (it was only a month old when I visited in October) with a cottage feel. I learned that it is run by two ethnic Shan sisters who grew up in Thailand and returned home to Myanmar. Their food is authentic and much cheaper than the usual restaurants listed in Tripadvisor.Location is tucked away behind 81 Hotel and next to a new building construction. It's set in from the road but there is a sign.

After visiting nearby Phaungdawoo Pagoda we went to The Inn Thar Lay Restaurant, which is in a quaint two-storey wooden hut/house, above the brownish lake. It got a very earthy feel to it, a very relaxing place, with the full view of the canal. Food was OK, really not that special, fish was quite small and the taste a bit bland.

The newly open Green Chilli Restaurant (Nampan)(same ownership of Green Chilli Restaurant in Nyaung Shwe) is located in Nampan Village, Inle Lake, just next to the most visited boat building workshop in the area and three minutes by boat from Golden Islan
I had a good lunch with my local guide at this restaurant. Our meal included a big fried fish, pea-soup, tomato salad, chicken with potato curry & dessert. We were observing passing boats and other stilted structures near by. It was a nice relaxing atmosphere.Service was also very good

The Hlaing Konn Restaurant opened in 2000, our cuisine is based on Pa-O traditional food, Myanmar traditional food and Chinese food. We also help our community providing first job opportunity and customer service training to our staff.
After a long road journey and visit to the pagodas just across, to sit and have a fantastic meal is a great culmination to a wonderful trip to Kakku. The restaurant is airy and spacious and one is served by traditionally attired staff, gracious and smiling. The food one gets is great. It's fresh, diverse and tasty, Avocado mash, tofu, Shan noodles, soup....everything is just so mouthwatering. You can also pick up some interesting handicrafts from a stall in the restaurant.Dear Pahari,Mingalabar!Thank you so much for your lovely words. It made our day beautiful. We are so glad to hear you enjoyed your visit in Myanmar. We hope to see you again. Enjoy your travels!

We visited to enjoy a cooling fruit juice. I chose pineapple juice, which was exceptionally good. Our guide and my wife preferred an avocado shake, which was also good. The restaurant is on the creeks edge and provides good viewing of the boats going by. The toilets are in the western style and very clean. A strange aspect in the restaurant is suspended plastic bags full of water. These are claimed to frighten flies away! The drinks were 2000 kyat each, but we were charged only 4000. Apparently guides are not charged.

We were a large party which sometimes causing problems for the servers. The servers were very attentive and paid attention to our needs. The menu is mostly Asian cuisine although they do have a fixed price European menu. The serving sizes were plentiful. The wine selection was very good by Myanmar standards. We dined outdoors. Each table gas mosquito repellant on it and we all used
