Seychelles Food Guide: 10 Cajun & Creole food Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Mahe Island

March 7, 2020 Chanda Heide

Reviews on Cajun & Creole food in Mahe Island, Seychelles. The Seychelles largest and main island, Mahe is home to the capital of Victoria and about 70,000 people (almost 90% of the nation's total). Still, the island retains its idyllic beauty, with 3,000-foot mountains and scores of gorgeous beaches. Many plants, including the so-called Jellyfish Tree and several rare orchids, are unique to Mahe's shores. The Seychelles Natural History Museum, the Botanical Gardens and the Codevar Craft Centre, all in Victoria, are not to be missed.

Le Bistro is a very cosy restaurant with a pleasant atmosphere. The staff are mostly French-speakers but they speak other languages as well and are very welcoming. The menu ha few options but whatever is on offer is definitely worth. My colleagues and I had a birthday lunch there and we had a wonderful time. The food came warm and served with a smile and we didn't even have to wait long. I ordered grilled squid in spicy sauce and a serving of steamed vegetable. The portion is a bit small but the price is right. The dessert was just fantastic and comes highly recommended- they are also very affordable.Overall it's a great place (very busy during lunch time) but it's a shame they close at 17h00. They should really consider opening unti later (say, dinner) and weekends. It's a great change from your ordinary french restaurant as it really gives you a local taste of Seychelles.

Considering the prices in the Seychelles it was not that expensive. Service is good and food quality was great. It is well located and place looked very simple at first (considering it was not creole restaurant or inexpensive) and the food made the difference.

Overlooking the Seychelles crystal waters and Victoria’s town centre, Marie Antoinette Restaurant is perched on St Louis Hill shrouded by lush greenery.Awarded National Monument status in 2007, the French colonial house has been lovingly restored and is the perfect location to tuck into some delicious Creole cuisine.Using local organic ingredients to prepare authentic Seychellois comfort food, diners are presented with an array of speciality dishes.Expect eggplant fritters, pickled green papaya salad, tuna steak, chicken curry, fish stew, grilled fish and more, all served with rice and intended to share.Additional dishes may be added with prior notice; lobster, octopus, prawns, and, dare I say it, fruit bat.Desserts are simple fruit salad, caramelised bananas, a selection of ice creams and sorbets, with the highlight being sweet coconut nougat.Try to arrive with some daylight remaining to wander the herb, spice and flower garden. The already mentioned views are spectacular and if you can’t make it to Aldabra Atoll for the giant tortoises, there are a couple to greet you at Marie Antoinette.Find Marie Antoinette Restaurant as you climb Revolution Road from the Clocktower roundabout in Victoria, Mahé.

The seating is under cover or in the sand overlooking the sea, it’s stunning. The Restaurant Le Reduit is a nice and original one situated in the middle of the forest surrounded by exhilarating vegetation. It’s therefore a restaurant located in a sort of a paradise. The day light coming in through the large windows when they are wide open makes the customers happy thus enjoying a bright and gay atmosphere. It's paradoxically cozy thanks to the scant decoration.I went there on the occasion of an excursion around the Island of Mahé, as a part of it. We ate some typical Créole food very well cooked and tasty. Everything was perfect until the music machine was switched on. From that moment onwards I felt like fleeing away. It was so,loud and the music so nasty that our repast was completely spoiled. The people sitting at the same table couldn’t even make themselves understood when talking to each other so I decided to keep silent for the rest of the lunch. The alternative would have been to yell all the time to go on holding a dialogue. It’s a pity since otherwise, without that noise pollution, that place would be quite confortable and good and thus a recommendable one.Dear periandro,Warm greeting from the Le Reduit team and a big thank you for reviewing us.We appreciate your comment.First, I would like to thank you for your just and fair comment about the food and the location of the restaurant.I will also agree with you about the music. (Second such comment about music in a space of 2 weeks,)But, let me assure you it is a matter of choices.1- Some clients want the music STOP altogether just to listen to the sound of nature.2- Some claimed it is too DULL with no ambiance.3- Some suggested the music is too LOURD.4- Some claimed the music is to SOFT5- Some have NO opinion at all.6- I'm LOST.What I believe also provoked your comment was that you were in a large group (Mason's) and it was difficult to satisfy all of you.Believe me most of the time we abide to the client reguest in that respect when asked and whenever it is possible. Please accept our apology.

We came to eat in Eden restaurant as H resort guests. Service was so welcoming and warm. The location of the restaurant is great, as it is just by the beach and it is so romantic dining while listening to the waves. But we experienced few things that we think didn’t fit the standard of the resort: We felt that the food was not that amazing and wasn’t worth the prices. My fish was over cooked and dry, the side grilled vegetables were lacking flavor and some were bitter, we had ants walking on our table...It is still very important to note that service was excellent, as the chef came to our table to figure out what we didn’t like in the meal, and gave us a free dessert. But we still think that the total dinner experience wasn’t worth the high prices and that the restaurant could improve. The H-Resort in itself was an amazing experience and we will definitely recommend staying in the resort!!Dear netaweitz,Thank you so much for your review, your input and comments really mean a lot to us.We will definitely have a brainstorm and feedback meeting with the chef and the team and our sincere apologies as what you experienced with the food is not in line with our standards. We pride ourselves in the freshness and robustness of Eden's food and hope that we can welcome you again in the near future so that you can experience really what we are made of.I wish you a lovely day.Kind regards,Melissa

Lovely ambience to the whole place. Past colonialism meets future food excellence. We were met with a smile and helped to outdoor seating overlooking the growing sugar cane. The facility is not just a restaurant but also a Rum distillery. Obviously the pre-dinner cocktails had a rum theme. We had a beached Mojito and a rum Negario. Both tasted great. Food was a high quality. Prawns with seaweed and veal/tuna for starters. Both very good. The mains were even better. Kingfish wrapped in bacon. And duo fish. Oh my word. The taste of both was lovely. Great job by the chef and the staff. This is a MUST visit place for anyone visiting the Seychelles.
