This small, cozy, family-owned pub/restaurant continues to offer good food and good service, near the bridge over the Cree, at Newton Stewart. As one might expect, the menu is restricted to proven favourites but is good value, and served in pleasant surroundings, with a small car park adjacent. To be sure of getting dinner, you need to be there not much later than 20.30.The owner and his staff are unfailingly pleasant and friendly.

We were lucky to get booked into the Craft Hotel restaurant on the first Sunday evening of the Book Festival. The place was very busy, constantly turning people away. Yet, the staff were cheerful and the food was lovely. And it was so reasonably priced. The steak pie is to be recommended (and the wine is cheap and nice, too!). Great service, great value for money and good food.

We called in for a drink after visiting the Bladnoch Ddistillery across the road. The pub was very busy, which to me says it must be good. The young guy behind the bar had excellent local knowledge and was very polite when explaining local attractions. We really enjoyed our drinks/chat and we will definitely visit again.

Based on the glowing reviews , we decided to make a significant round trip for dinner. We ordered drinks before being shown to our table. The half pint of local ale which I was given was flat and tasted dreadful. The very enthusiastic lady tried to serve me a livelier drink by holding a pint glass further from the pump and pulling faster - this resulted in a beer that held a watery head for about a minute but was still undrinkable. We were shown to the table and then told that over half the menu was unavailable on Wednesdays and Thursdays - having failed to mention this when we booked or when we walked in. We decided to stay as this is miles from anywhere else to eat.The steak which arrived had been cooked medium rare as ordered but that was the only thing positive I could say about it. Almost impenetrable to a sharp steak knife , the pieces were tough and chewy with connective tissue and sinew throughout - only suitable for stewing. The lady was apologetic and offered to get another one but I'm afraid that by this stage I had no faith that anything would be any better. She came back a few minutes later to apologise that she had served me the wrong type of steak - Flat Iron instead of the Ribeye I had ordered. This missed the point that whatever cut of meat it was , it was inedible. The battered fish was pale to the point of not being cooked .My wife ate a small part of her fish and then offered to pay . Amazingly ,the lady accepted full payment for the fish and chips and the two bottled soft drinks whilst remaining strangely happy throughout this process as though nothing was wrong. The worst experience we have ever had by following a TA recommendation by some distance and we won't be back .

Arrived for an early dinner at 5.30pm so we could beat the evening rush. First time visit so was pleasantly surprised by the cosy bar and restaurant. We had a drink in the bar while looking at the menu and after ordering they said they would call us through to our table when the food was ready. The restaurant itself was very pleasant, not crowded at all with plenty of room around the tables. We had steak pie, rump of lamb and braised beef. The steak pie was really excellent, best I've had in a long time. The lamb and beef were also excellent, no problems there. Now for the minor issues.....All the vegetables were rather hard... Not cooked enough in our opinion. I do like my veg firm, but they were just too firm. The jus for the lamb came in a jug and the braised beef gravy did not... The complete opposite of that described in the menu. Not a problem for the lamb, but the beef was left swimming in the gravy. It would of been nice to have the gravy in a jug. Please note: these are just very minor quibbles and not serious enough for us to complain about.Unfortunately there was no cheesecake of the day, but the creme brulee and shortcake was delicious, but not quite set at the bottom.....The service was excellent and I would highly recommend the whole experience.I will certainly return....
