Bella Italia Ristorante

We visited this restaurant on spec while spending the day in North Berwick. We had a look at other restaurants and decided to try this one. We were both very glad we did as we loved itWe went in about 5.15 pm and only one other couple were in. Within half an hour the place was more or less full. There were a number of reserved tables and it was clear that the staff knew a number of the people who came in as regulars, so that was an excellent signThe ambience was lovely, with some music playing low in the backtground and the service was very good with friendly and helpful staff and the food was truly excellent: Both Hot and very tasty - and served quickly - but we weren't rushed between courses nor were we left sitting too long between the courses either. Absolutely delighted that we chose to dine here. Will return the next time we are in North Berwick

Reading reviews, we were looking forward to going! However, the food was unfortunately terrible. Pasta sauce was incredibly watery, chicken was frozen and glasses were filthy. Service was ok, although extremely slow and inattentive. We were overcharged but this was sorted quickly. Considering the price, we expected much better - won’t be back.

We’ve been here a few times and always enjoyed the job, ambience and the fact that it is a pleasant, small family run Italian.I had a few issues with my last visit with my main, a Cod dish being rather poor, under seasoned and not the freshest but put this down to a hiccup. My wife and I went down last Friday and I was disappointed by my flavourless, under seasoned aubergine and mozzarella starter. We never usually order pizza hear but fancied a change and quickly regret that decision. We ordered a burrata and Nduja flavoured pizza each but when it came out it was lukewarm, bordering on cold. Come on this is 2019 hot plates, hot food, happy customer! The pizza was very bare and also extremely salty (and I like salt!). After eating less then a half we gave up and I told the waiter that the pizza was cold and salty, his reply was to shrug his shoulders and say “Nduja is salty”. Both he and the chef/owner seemed entirely unfazed by the fact that they had just served inedible food to their customers. Only a poor quality Nduja is salty as extra salt is adding during the curing process to speed it up and increase yield, perhaps moving to a better product (and please taste first) and just increase your price a little to account for this. No brainier! We paid our bill and promptly left never to return which is a shame. As we left I watched another 4 plates leave the kitchen and go to a table without a hint of steam rising from the top, enjoy!
