My family and I love to come here for lunch whenever we’re in Castle Douglas. We like to try something new every time we’re here and have never been disappointed. The staff are friendly and it’s lovely to see them chatting amongst themselves and interacting with customers.

This is a family run business that knows how to look after its customers. We were attracted to this café as it offered a variety of choice of something warming to eat on a coolish June day. Its menu is quite extensive and includes soups, jacket potatoes and burgers as well as sandwiches in various forms. Indeed, their speciality sandwiches offer twelve different fillings in a choice of 6 different breads with 4 different spreads and a coice of 4 out of 9 salad toppings. Or, over 870,000 different varieties! Our choices were hot bacon sandwich (Granary, low fat spread, etc), Jacket potato with cheese and garlic mushrooms and a soup and sandwich combination. All were quickly prepared and served to the correct customer without the waitress having to enquire as to who was having which dish; customer service indeed. Our meals were delicious and plentiful and thoroughly enjoyed by all. The icing on the cake (so to speak) was that two of us were able to find a paperback each among the small collection of second hand books kept at the café for customers to take away for a small donation to charity. We intend to patronise this café again.

On holiday with our two dogs and mum it’s sometimes hard to find a cafe with a garden but this cafe is garden perfection with a lovey wooden gazebo covered in climbing flowers, a beautiful place to stop for a coffee and homemade cake or like us , lunch! The garden area is down a little alley way which you could easily miss as it’s not clearly signed. But the front of the cafe leads you down into a conservatory and out into the beautiful garden if you miss the alley. Waitress service but you order and pay inside first if you want to eat alfresco. Child and dog friendly. Gluten free on offer and soya milk alternative too. We’re visited twice this week already, and are visiting again today for lunch. Why? Because the food is tasty, homemade and delicious! Simple as that! Good value price wise too, making this cafe, the best in Castle Douglas in our opinion. Coffee is great, my mum even loved her Earl Grey tea, she usually moans it’s too weak! There are sandwiches with locally made bread, toasties and paninis, homemade quiches and soups plus lots of specials and homemade cakes to choose from. My sandwich came with a beautiful dressed salad, delicious. My mum ordered a cheese toastie which came with homemade chutney and the salad. She ate every scrap and enthused all the way through it! My hubby ordered the BLT and he too pronounced it to be lovely. I can’t recommend more highly. Try it yourself to find out what a gem of a place it is. In the garden on a sunny day, you feel as though you could be anywhere in the world, plenty of parasols to keep you shady if the sun is too hot. Wonderful place.

Just home from a pretty perfect meal at Mr Pook's kitchen. I'd been before for afternoon tea and wanted to experience what read like a great dining menu for evenings. We weren't disappointed in our choices. The staff are super, knowledgeable, friendly and efficient in their service delivery. We had scallops and the salmon pate after some tasty amuse bouche of radish with some interesting embellishments! (Little bugs) Mains were a seriously delish rib eye with the best ever chunky chips and an expertly cooked duck in a cherry/vodka sauce, especially the crispy skin. Mmmmm. Well worth the 55 mile trip.I'm very happy we managed to feed you well, especially after such a long journey for your tea.I will be sure to let the team know about your kind review. The little bugs were popped wild rice, we often announce them to kids as edible creepy crawlies. We look forward to welcoming you back.Kind regardsEdward Pook

This holiday park-based restaurant is well-placed for the Colvend, Rushcliffe, Sandyhills area. We enjoyed our food, though my bacon-wrapped chicken stuffed with haggis was rather sickly given the cream source it was served with. The restaurant prices were a little steep for the food on offer.

We’ve visited here pretty regularly over the years whilst holidaying. This time was a bit disappointing....from first going to the bar to order drinks, no welcoming word or smile...was I just an inconvenient customer?! We sat outside, but had to retreat inside because of the number of wasps (Not the pubs fault obviously). Other half ordered the seafood chowder, which was good. Daughter ordered macaroni cheese, which was a bit weird...pasta twists in a really strong, tangy cheese sauce and my prawn sandwich was just tasteless....but no-one checked with us if we were ok. All in all, very average...I wasn’t expecting gourmet, but a warm, friendly welcome and some improvement in the quality of food and service definitely wouldn’t go amiss Hello there, thank you for your review. As you say, normally we are a very friendly team of hard working folk so not sure why you did not feel the warmth this visit but trust you will call again. All best wishes from the team at the Anchor Hotel Kippford.

Our favourite pub by far. A comfortable rural pub, which is honest, unpretentious and welcoming. Sit in the bar, the dining area, the conservatory, the garden or the terrace and you will have a wonderful view of the estuary and the stunning beauty that is Kippford. Its clean, dog friendly (and kid friendly with a nice play area outside) Amazing home cooked food, lightning fast service, and a genuine pleasure to visit. The macaroni is in particular exceptional, as are the goulash, stews and fish. Visited what must now be into the 100 times and never had a bad experience. We absolutely love it!

As an outsider to the area, what is easy to see on trip advisor within rural places to visit is that they have somewehat a monopoly within an area. If your the only cafe within a 1 mile radius, then people seem to inflate a rating. We stopped here for some light dinner, the place is nice, the chickens running free is a nice touch (especially for the kids) and its dog / bike friendly, so popular with local adventure tourists. The food is simple cafe food, all day breakfasts, sandwiches, cakes ect, but very run of the mill and nothing exotic. Service was good but the again with the rural location, you notice the prices are high considering what your buying. We had a breakfast and two other small meals and its £30, which is a considerable cost. Comments from people about 'Best breakfast ever' and 'Best food I have had for ages' i would say you need to get out more if that is the case. Good service and very friendly staff which is great, but the food is average.
