We struggled in Ballater to find somewhere that we could get my sonâs wheelchair into and also allowed dogs. We were welcomed into the Desside Inn with a ramp quickly offered and dogs welcomed.Very nice food, some decent ale, service was cheerful from the Antipodean barman, and we had a nice relaxing lunch. Nice bar area as well. Fair prices.

We had mixed expectations of the restaurant here mainly due to the reaction of locals when we said we were dining here. Bemusement. Astonishment. Sincerest best wishes. This could be a cracking little hotel if it wasn't for the funereal atmosphere and the sense that one of the guests had recently passed away - but nobody wanted to talk about the elephant (or body) in the room. The service was suitably somber, (we were one of a handful of guests at dinner), yet somehow the food provided a remarkable resurrection in fortunes. Surprisingly well prepared and cooked, with decent efficient service, even if the eyes in the painting of a Lord behind us seemed to follow us around the room.Yes the atmosphere was like an Adams Family reunion (but without the laughs), but with a little extra love and a defibrillator, this hotel could become a fabulous spot.

Entering from the snow to the Ante room we were welcomed with a log fire, comfy chairs and drinks. The service was good and the staff were very helpful. Everyone enjoyed their food which was not only excellent but also reasonable portioned. I would certainly visit here again.

Local Pub in the heart of the village serving a high standard of pub food including homemade soups & sandwiches, burgers, fish and vegetarian options as well as homemade puddings. We have an excellent array of premium spirts, beers, real ales and lagers.
After just arriving in Ballater, Scotland we checked into our B&B and headed out for lunch. The menu at The Balmoral Bar had a few vegetarian options so we stopped in. Typical bar food.I ordered the Veggie Burger with salad and my partner ordered the Macaroni and Cheese with Salad and Chips. The cook ran out to tell me he ran out of veggie burgers so I ordered a Margherita Pizza. The pizza crust was very thin and crispy, more like a cracker than bread, the sauce tasted like only a tomato paste and the shredded was not even melted, just laying on top. For my taste, it was a bad pizza. My partner loved the Macaroni and Cheese with the Salad and Chips. The cheese was very creamy, just a little different having onions and green pepper bits on top.Service was very friendly and quick. No my best meal in Scotland.

We are HGVC club owners from the US and this is our first time visiting. We enjoy visiting the lounge after a day of sightseeing and relaxing with a beverage. Martin Kearney greets us each night and inquires about our activities that day. We look forward to seeing him at the end of our day. Thanks for such a fantastic review - I'm delighted you received such fabulous service from Martin and will pass on your feedback to him and to the management here at Craigendarroch. Hope to see you again soon, Colin

The conservatory restaurant at the Darroch Learg Hotel is a short walk from the centre of Ballater. The restaurant is open seven days a week to both guests and non-residents.
Wonderful to be back in the restaurant, which since the changes has retained an even more impressive ambience and yet warmth. Superb in every respect, cuisine, attention to detail, service and just everything. Wonderful to see the Owners on hand and involved with an obvious happy team of staff. Kitchen arrangements very impressive, just congratulations all round ! Thank you Nigel and Fiona a total credit to your very hard work.

Sat outside this place for a drink on a sunny day and it was nice to watch the traffic and tourists go by however warm sunny days like that are infrequent in Ballater. Inside the bar was rather drab and totally empty. Perhaps it gets busy in the evenings but there was nothing there to make me want to return. Even the staff were rather quiet in comparison to what we found in other places. Prices or drinks were ok.

There's lots of reviews for Rock Salt & Snails in Aberdeen but they have just opened in Ballater.

Great food and lovely Scottish venue. Even the waiter was wearing a kilt... not cheap but the food was outstanding. Thanks for your kind review of the Clachan Grill. We hope to welcome you back again soon.

Bad attitude from the main waiter from the minute you enter the restaurant, over defensive when asked questions, too cocky with comments and reluctant to be helpful, why is he client facing?White Bait as a table nibble? Curious and I like it! Rigid and inflexible menu, no salad option. Small portions, the venison was excellent but only 2 x 2oz pieces for £30. In general the food is well presented, with professional cooking and tasty. Seasoning needs much attention as the Rib-Eye Steak was lacking flavour.Curious small wine list with no recognizable red offerings from France, Spain or Portugal. At £174 for 3 people, the prices are excessive and unrealistic for the portion sizes offered and service delivered. We rate the place 5/10 and will not return.
