Scotland, United Kingdom Food Guide: 10 Bar food Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Gullane

September 18, 2019 Venice Greaves

Reviews on Bar food in Gullane, Scotland, United Kingdom. Gullane (possibly from Scottish Gaelic Gualainn, meaning 'ridge') is a town on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth in East Lothian on the east coast of Scotland. There has been a church in the village since the ninth century. The ruins of the Old Church of St. Andrew built in the twelfth century can still be seen at the western entrance to the village; the church was abandoned after a series of sandstorms made it unusable, and Dirleton Parish Church took its place.

Had a beautiful meal here tonight. They catered well for gluten free. The prawn cocktail was very nice served with gluten free bread. Tandoori chicken and rice was absolutely gorgeous too and was also gluten free. Hubby said the beef with roast potatoes creamy potatoes carrots and Was beautiful and enjoyed it very much.We certainly love coming here for meals and have so far not been disappointed. Only disappointment comes with the lack of straight toilet seat on disabled toilet. Please , please get it fixed. With that said though we will be back no problem. But just fix that little problem.

Chosen because two (particularly one) of the men were very plain eaters. Firstly we did get a bit lost on entry and ended up heading to the bedrooms. Our service was shared by a young man and a mature lady who were excellent. The 3 starters seemed to go well particularly the one who had the soup. I don't have a great appetite and was looking forward to the roast beef dinner so had just a roll and butter, too hot to handle and over microwaved! My beef was overcooked, so that and half of another's steak pie was kindly "doggie bagged" and it was well appreciated by dog lover companion's pooches. The "plain eater" had fish and chips and although he didn't say anything, he only ate about half of the serving. Apart from a lot of noise from a particularly busy bar we enjoyed our visit and were reminded of our visits to our local pubs in our younger days. Be prepared to run the "fag reek" gauntlet on entry and exit.

Our last visit was poor so a few months later we all decided to give it a go again. Soo disappointed ... firstly the service was really slow , even for the drinks to arrive. The waitress I felt was abrubt & there seemed to be no one in charge of the team of servers. We asked for the air con to be turned down & halfway through our meal a waitress opened a door wide onto the outdoor seating area & never even asked us if that was ok. & it was a blast from the past as the weather had got colder in the evenings. Two chose breaded fish & chips peas the only thing that was well cooked were the chips! The fish was dry & had been waiting to be served up! Another portion was the sea bream not a very appetising presentation & like the other portions it was dried out & not good. My portion was lamb shank , it had also been waiting to be served up rather dried out , a small serving of mash & one piece of kale & 2 bits of deep fried veg soo poor not fresh just dried up & very unappetising. We also ordered coffee & teas & we had a square of a chocolat crunch but we have decided we will not return it was a complete waste of money & time! Come on manager get it sorted out ! Dear 101RJM,Thank you for your detailed review and observations about your return trip to The Nether Abbey - we are sorry you had a disappointimg experience. As you will appreciate, we serve many customers, and by far the majority of them are pleased with the food and service, endorsed by their repeat custom. On that basis, we are always concerned when an experience at The Nether Abbey falls short. We will review your comments at our forthcoming weekly staff meeting - and again, we appreciate you bringing this to our attention. Kind regards,The Nether Abbey Team.

Nice restaurant in the centre of North Berwick. Good breakfast selection at very reasonable prices. Only down side on this visit was that there wasn't enough milk to go with the coffee and we had to ask twice for some more. Obviously hasn't put us off as we're going back with some other friends in a couple of days!

After a lovely walk from Yellowcraigs beach with our well behaved clean Westie dog (on a lead) we approached this hotel for a cup of tea and bite to eat. After carefully checking the information displayed outside advising that dogs were welcome in the beer garden, we entered. We checked once again with the bar staff that we could bring the dog in and were advised that we could as long as we sat in the beer garden, which we were happy to do as it was a nice sunny afternoon. As the bar staff turned to retrieve menus from behind the bar we were approached brusquely by a rather intimidating aggressive man, whom we assumed to be the manager and who said “you’ll have to take the dog to the garden” We replied that we understood and were just waiting for a menu from the bar staff. This would have been glaringly obvious already as the bar was empty and he was sat approximately 6 feet away when we first entered and had the initial conversation with the bar staff. He then responded aggressively saying “no, you have to go now, okay?” By this point it became very clear that we were not welcome whatsoever in this empty bar and to be honest his manner was extremely intimidating. I have often seen negative reviews on trip advisor regarding staff attitude etc in other establishments and must admit I’ve been incredulous that any customer service staff could be as rude as described in these reviews but in this case this is exactly what happened. We left and made our way a few metres up the road and had a delicious afternoon tea at the aptly named Welcome Arms Hotel. Please do not waste your time and give the Castle Inn Bar and Bistro a miss any time you are in Dirleton.

Heard good things about restaurant & knew its was overpriced but expected that, so decided to booked a table anyway, wish we'd went elsewhere, we arrived & got seated given menus & within 3 minutes a waitress appeared & just looked at us without speaking when I looked up I was greeted with a stoney face & asked "ready to order" we said no but could we order a drink she just rolled her eyes at us, got drinks then ordered, husband ordered haggis, neeps & tatties, you'd need binoculars to find the neeps, I ordered soup with was nice but lukewarm, starter was sausage & onion gravy & fish & chips, gravy around the sausage was thick like treacle & tasted very bitter, the potatoes were nicely mashed though, the fish & chips, the fish batter was very greasy & what was with the one little lettuce leaf stuck on the side of the plate. If your looking for great food & pleasant atmosphere stick to your usual haunts.

We went with high hopes given the word on the street. My wife had a decent experience a few years ago so we thought we'd give it a go.Atmosphere was very busy so dont go if you prefer things a bit quieter.Starters were interesting and not bad. Thai style chicken and korean dumplings.I went for haggis main but later in the night was to regret it. Enough said. I remember it wasnt the warmest when I ate it and the potato mash had obviously been stuck to the heating pan - heated too quickly? Thats what you get for not returning food you are unhappy with and wouldnt prepare for yourself. My wifes veggie burger was ok.Needless to say we were disappointed. My tip go when less busy.Servers are pleasant and welcoming tho'.Dear WeirdfizI am sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your visit to The Old Clubhouse.I must insist however that whatever disagreed with you would have been nothing to do with the food you consumed here. Our haggis is prepared to order and cooked in a steam convection oven for a specific length of time. If this had been what made you ill, we would have had another 20 complaints on the same day.I fail to see how your mashed potato could be described as stuck to the heating pan when it is cooked in the same way as the haggis, for the same length of time. It would be impossible for one to be overcooked, and the other 'not the warmest'.Dominic CampanileGeneral Manager
