In an almost deserted Halberstadt we came across this nice restaurant for an evening meal. We were the only guests but the landlady was extremely friendly , lit the candles on our table and put some music on. We had time to look around and the place is gorgeous. Each table is decorated in a different way and looks like a fine piece of art !The food is good and the service is excellent.

We were visiting Halberstadt with family friends and looked forward to a great dinner..Sigh, not to be had. Our first clue shouldâve been the EMPTY restaurant at prime time (7:30) on Wednesday night. Halberstadt tends to roll up the sidewalks early...we ventured in.... Even though we were the only diners in the place, service was still slow...and disinterested.Selections sounded good, and I was tempted by the various meat dishes, aside from Schwein, which is a non starter for us. My friend suggested that I have the Zanderfisch, which proved to be the best choice out of our party. Mushy, but tasty, Vegetables in the side were on the cold side, my thought was that theyâd barely left the bag of Birdseye frozen veggie... read on. My husband is vegan, due to food allergies - no dairy, no fish, no meat, no eggs. Our hosts tried to explain that dishes should be free of cheese, butter, etc - requests that were greeted with disdain and incredulity - we ended up ordering a selection of mixed vegetables. What appeared on the Plate was Germanyâs version of Birdseye frozen - a stack of undercooked peas atop stacks of other undercooked mixed vegetables, including tasteless cauliflower and green Kellerâs. Nothing resembling adequately warm. My husband, being very polite, suffered through and made a good effort. While being vegan is not as commonly found in smaller towns, it is not so unusual that itâs impossible to accommodate. Our friends ordered Sauerbraten - a dish that should be easy to do and of fabulous quality in this part of Germany. The meat was very tough and oversauced, in a word, inedible. They sent back the dish- requesting that it be redone. Another tough piece of meat, which elicited the suggestion that an older cow was the source of the dish - meat less than ideal for sauerbraten. The waitress took offense at this - which, seeing as the proprietor is/was a prominent butcher and sausage purveyor, seemed like a valid and true comment. Old cow = tough meat. Beer selections good and almost made up for the disappointing mains. Italian wine, good and dry, nothing special to mention.Dessert, meh - we shared a crepe and ice cream dish between the five of us. As mentioned, meh. Halberstadt is a lovely smallish town (40,000) that is well worth a visit, there are other, BETTER, places to dine.

Don´t expect to get mainly potatoe dishes. The potatoes are more the side dish. The menue is very meat oriented. The potatoe fritters and the french fries are not homemade. It made us wonder why the call themselves potatoecellar. You´d expect homecooked potatoe specialities... Anyway, we had 4 different dishes that were all ok, nothing special but nothing to comlain about. My dish was potatoe in the skin with salmon and curd dip. The relation between potatoe and curd was wrong (three times as much curd as I could possibly eat) but apart from this the taste was good. The place actually is in a basement, so only a good idea to go there in the winter or when it´s raining. The waitress was nice. The price was rather cheap. If you don´t expect anything fancy, like meat and don´t care that some dishes aren´t homemade it´s a good place to eat.

A nice place to go, especially in the summer the place benefits from the big glass windows out to the back. The decor is still a bit 90s but has its charms and doesnt feel outdated. The Chef and the server were really knowledgable. The food is German traditional but always with a twist to stand out of the crowd. Can also recommend it for large groups, we hosted a class reunion there once.
