Solar Da Bica

Solar da Bica is a cosy and quiet rural tourism unit, nestled at the magic and idyllic São Vicente valley, in the Madeira Island. Located in an area with one unique view over the valley, it offers unforgettable landscapes through the breathtaking scenario of the mountains, including the exuberant vegetation of the Laurissilva Forest. The property results from the reconstruction, adaptation and preservation of the traditional typology of two century-old houses. Although it preserves many of the original elements, the Solar da Bica was adapted with modern infrastructures, of which are worth mention the indoor heated swimming pool, the sauna, the panoramic garden and the sustainable vegetable-garden. Madeira Airport is 45 km away. We recommend you to rent a car.

Nice place, but too far from everything

Reviewed By Froggy2Denmark

We stayed here for one night during a hiking trip. The reception staff was very friendly when we arrived. We had a double room which was on the top floor (room 11). The view faced north onto the mountain, it would have been better – and sunnier - on the other side. The room was a bit small but comfortable, and the bathroom and shower were nice. Coffee is provided for free downstairs at any time. There is no restaurant which is a bit unpractical if you don't have a car (we didn't as we were on a hiking trip). The hotel is far away from everything – about 4 km to the cost and places to eat. It is up on a hill (as are a lot of places in Madeira) and it really isn't practical to walk to and from a restaurant. They said we could order take-away and sent us a link to a restaurant and offered to help us order. But when they phoned up, they were told the delivery man was sick so no deliveries that day … We hadn't eaten all day and needed dinner and the hotel offered the only thing available – some sandwiches and a salad (their own home-grown produce). So we ordered that. When we were eating the sandwiches a bit slug crawled out of one of them … we brought it back down and they apologised but laughed and said "that's nature"! Sure, it is … and we got a new sandwich which we ate because we were hungry … We did think they should have given it to us for free because of the slug but they didn't. Not a huge problem, but still … We were tempted to use the pool but didn't as there were other people there and it's not that big. The Solar da Bica is quite a nice place but without anything (restaurants or anything else) nearby it's not very practical if you don't have a car. If it had a restaurant it would have been a big plus.

Run down and unfriendly

Reviewed By John F

We had booked two nights half board but left after one day as we really didn't like the place. No refund but we couldn't wait to leave. It's clearly seen better days and post Covid seems quite run down and neglected albeit clean. Our room was a basic twin bed room with quite a nice view. And an interesting puddle of water in the room by the window which we cleaned up and then left the room to air. The hotel manager was courteous and spoke great English and proceeded to tell us all the things we couldn't have due to staff shortages. No bar, no tea, only prebooked half board meals, which unfortunately we had booked. The food was bland and boring, the worst meal we experienced in Madeira. We sat in the nice garden in the sun on the first afternoon which was the nicest part of the stay. We couldn't wait to leave the next day after a boring functional buffet breakfast. Fortunately the levada walk was amazing and we went on to stay in a lovely Quinta above Funchal. It's cheap but worth missing until it improves

Great Stay

Reviewed By Waves-Pat

It was a good hotel with nice and friendly staff. The pools are clean and the food is good so far. Only the behaviour of some of the other guests leaves something to be desired - and that is education... Otherwise we were very pleased. Going to sleep with the sound of the waves is cool! And São Vicente is a good place to have a home base because the rest of the island is easily reachable from there. It is small and quiet though so it's not suited for people craving night life. Be sure to visit the beach in Seixal!

5+ Stars for this gem

Reviewed By pendarpaykari

What an absolute gem. Five stars are not enough for this place. The setup is slightly different to other hotels in that the rooms are split into separate houses, each complete with a living room and kitchen, perfect for larger parties but also works well for couples and smaller groups. The views are incredible. You wake up to a beautiful sun rise from behind the majestic mountains and to the sound of the birds chirping. There’s a church bell nearby that chimes on the hour, which gives it a small village feel. This is a family-run business and you feel that in every way. They held a special dinner event on the Saturday which happened to be our anniversary and they made it even more special with their warmth and welcoming nature. We really felt like part of the family. Thank you Hugo, Paulo, Mariana, and everyone else. And if you plan to rent a car while visiting the island (and you should), make sure to contact the hotel as they have some very good rates. Unfortunately we didn’t know this and ended up worse off.
