Absolutely awful conditions, completely falsely advertised, we had no electric and Wi-Fi on the first day of stay, the only decent area is the lounge but is constantly occupied by groups of guys smoking. The rooms are hot dark and full of mosquitos being the only light you get from the open door or a small lampshade. No ventilation whatsoever. The bedding was used and smelly and extremely uncomfortable and there’s only one socket in the room which plugs in the only light you have. You must choose either light or charge your phone. The bathrooms are shared and there’s rarely toilet paper. The pool was rancid and filthy and unusuable. The area is very dodgy and we wouldn’t advise it for families, there are a lot of beggars and drugs in the doorstep, and very unsafe once it gets dark. This was by far the worst ‘hotel’ we have ever stayed. This is actually just someone’s home not a hotel, there’s no service of any kind, no housekeeping, no cleaning, no breakfast, no safety and bare minimal maintenance. The whole property has no glass windows and is all on the open, be prepared to have all sorts of creepy bugs, fleas and mosquitoes in the bed with you. I can’t believe there are actually some genuine good reviews about this place. While we stayed we noticed everyone tends to stay for one night only and leave.

Good location, close to the city centre and local transport. Clean, comfortable, adequate breakfast. Very nice and very helpful staff. Even though they could not speak English they went out of their way to help me to book a Lencois Maranhenses tour and give me information about the town. I stayed there on Sunday which I was advised by the reception lady wasn't the safest day to walk around for the single woman so she organised her colleague to accompany me to the bus stop for a nearby town. Thank you for looking after me so well.

Pousada Colonial is a historical building in the upper area of the historical center of São Luis. The building started as an aristocratic residence, probably soon after the independence in the early 1800’s, but has also functioned as a convent and a school. Along these times, it has suffered some structural changes and additions indoors, but the front part of the building and façade kept much of their original traces. It still features the original tiles outside and much of the stonework and woodwork indoors. The house has a lot of charm for those who appreciate history. (Reportedly, many of the national tourists head for the new part of the city, full of condos along the beach, and the touristic spots like Lencois Maranhenses, and do not appreciate the full daily cycle of the old town – the reason why the city is a world heritage.) Part of the charm is that no two rooms look alike, at least the three rooms where we stayed in different stints in São Luís. The pousada is a relatively cheap hostel, and this does not rhyme very well with its historical pedigree. So, all rooms had minor issues with the taps and pipes, and the A/Cs were a bit noisy. However, the staff were very friendly, and always tried to repair any faults as soon as we communicated them. The rooms were very clean and the beds comfortable. The breakfast buffet catered for both Brasilians and foreigners, with their different preferences. We stayed at the pousada in May, fortunately a low season and quiet period. The staff looked a bit idle, but always responded quickly when prompted. I guess they will be significantly busier in June during the festive season in the whole of Maranhão. Being at the upper part of the old city, the pousada borders both to the extremely busy shopping streets (in weekdays) on the upper side, which are worth a visit, and the quiet historical part in the lower side. The street where the pousada lies is very quiet, even during the day. It is a 5 min walk to the inner cultural and leisure hearth of the old city. The streets towards the center are a bit empty and dark at night, but feel safe. During our eight-day stay, we went for a stroll and a dinner or snack downtown every single evening and never experienced any issue. On the contrary, people could be quite friendly and funny when we first approached them. Therefore, don’t expect first class premises, but if you appreciate the historical charm and a quiet hospitality, this pousada is definitively a good option in São Luís.
