This is by far and away one of the most well kept secrets in all the land. B&B La Locanda Cistercense is a place that not many people in the world know about, but that everyone in the world SHOULD know about. The most comfortable bed I have ever slept on in all of Italy; the most stunning view you will find in Lazio's countryside nearly comparable to anywhere in Tuscany; and the food - it's sheer heaven. But most of all, the hospitality, warmth and kindness that the owners of this humble B&B show are the most unforgettable part of the experience. You will soon feel like part of the family after staying here, and before you leave, you will be drying your eyes not wanting to part! The restaurant downstairs is owned and run by the patron of the family, Saverio, whose specialty (aside from his contagious smiling) is pizza. He and his son work on serving the hungry patrons and guests of the b&b all day long during the lunch and dinner hours. While his daughter-in-law wears several hats (pastry chef, cleaning lady, and waitress), his daughter is the owner of the fabulous b&b. I stayed in the suite of the guesthouse, making it perhaps the nicest and most sought after "apartment" that they have on offer. A two-level mini-apartment, it has all the creature comforts that any traveling guest would want in a vacation rental. The lower level has a kitchen which is fully stocked with pots, pans, silverwear, a fridge, and of course, no Italian kitchen would be complete without olive oil and pasta. The same level has a small living room area with flat screen TV, full-length antique mirror, and dining room and chairs. Extending out from the kitchen is a terrace, with the most remarkable view - particularly at sunset. Flowers align the entire balcony area, and there is even a table and chairs for your morning coffee or afternoon snack and a rocking chair in the corner if you feel like reading. The downstairs and upstairs are split with a winding staircase. On the second level you will find the bedroom and bathroom which has a very American touch. Plenty of soft towels, wonderful smelling soaps, and a huge glass shower will entice you to stay longer than you'd originally planned. But, the pièce de résistance is most definitely that bed. WOW. That bed is the most delicious thing (aside from their wine and pizza) you will get to try while staying here. I did not want to get out of that bed for the three nights I was there. It was like a drug. So unbelievably comfortable - words do not do it justice. I loved their full breakfasts in the morning, the coziness of the whole guesthouse, and the fairy tale-like ambiance that it conveys while one stays here. I would highly recommend coming here both for short-term and long-term stays. It's truly a hidden gem and I am so glad I got the chance to stay here!

Tiziana is an incredible hostess, my room is charming and well equipped, everything is sparkling. I am glad I have two more nights! The decoration of the room is very cute, obvious that effort went into it. This is not a luxury hotel, but it's one of the nicest places I've stayed in Italy.

The photo on TripAdvisor does not do these rooms justice. We stayed in adjoining rooms that could have served as a set for a 17th Century drama. The ceilings are incredibly high, the furniture is ancient, and the structure is spacious and elegant. We shared an interesting bathroom--small but clean--that jutted out into one of the rooms, which seemed like a good solution to the design problems without compromising the historic floorplan. Given the rooms and the nature and location of the building, this was a fantastic value. The owners speak no English; a visiting French in-law served as our translator. But the service was excellent, and everyone was as friendly as could be. (We had trouble getting a response to email inquiries before the trip. The language barrier may explain that.) We arrived on bikes and were quickly shown a secure place to lock them in a lovely courtyard. The B&B appears to be changing its name to something like "B&B Olympia," which may create some confusion. When we went to breakfast in the morning, we noticed a number of Italian guests who were staying on an upper floor in rooms that were probably less historic. So it may be worth inquiring. I believe our rooms were on the piano nobile, if that helps. They are two doubles that share a bathroom, so they may not be a good fit for some travelers. Modern clutter seems to have passed over San Martino, which can thank a steep hill as you travel from the west for its seclusion. Residenza Widman is a peaceful place to enjoy this authentic Italian town.

Sicuramente appena avrò occasione passerò a salutarlo.
