Lush Atitlan

Lush is ideally located on a hillside on the shores of spectacular Lake Atitlán in San Marcos La Laguna, Guatemala. The hotel has 10 unique rooms and suites, each one individually designed, with one-of-a-kind art works and locally made furniture. All of the rooms boast of incredible views of the lake and surrounding volcanoes, a private terrace or balcony, offering guests a harmonious balance with the surrounding nature.

Book if you want to sleep with scorpions!

Reviewed By MeghanMJ2022

We booked one of the most expensive rooms for 2 nights. Upon arriving back to our room after dinner we were greeted by multiple large banana spiders and scorpions in our room. Crawling on our luggage and bedding. We were distraught and terrified. At this point we were unable to get a reservation at another local hotel, the front desk staff assured us that we would get a full refund upon checking out the next day. The next morning the staff informed us that we will NOT be refunded after being lied to the night prior. We were forced to pay for an additional night when we originally were told otherwise. Horrible customer service. In addition- the wifi is extremely spotty for anyone that has to work, it will not suffice. Construction of a new building next door begins at 8 AM so don’t expect to sleep in. DO NOT overlook negative reviews. We were naive. I STRONGLY advise not booking. Can sleep in the woods with bugs for free.

Fantastic hotel with beautiful views

Reviewed By 483kellyl

PROS: The property is beautiful and well maintained. We loved that the hotel had a waterfront beach bar/restaurant with stunning views of the volcanoes. We were looking for a place to just relax by the lake, and the hotel had 4 large beds/cabanas reserved for hotel guests so this was perfect. There is strong Wifi at the beach bar so I did work there every morning while enjoying the view. The area of the lake by the hotel is clean and we saw many people swimming in the water. We ate breakfast and lunch there multiple times throughout our stay and the food was excellent, along with the drinks. They have an assortment of "American" food (eggs benedict, waffles, burgers, pasta, pizza) and more traditional Guatemalan food as well. The hotel is a 5 minute walk to the main "tourist" area of town where there are more cafes and restaurants. Since the hotel is waterfront, it is not connected directly to the main road. Cars/tuktuks are not able to drive directly up to the main entrance of the hotel, so just be prepared for a short walk from the main road to the hotel itself. If you are arriving via boat, the hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the dock. There are signs for El Dragon Hotel that take you through a "shortcut" in between other properties on the lake, but this path was not well maintained and filled with garbage, so I'd recommend skipping this shortcut and just walking up to and along the main road, especially if you have a suitcase. As usual with any hotel there was daily room cleaning available, fresh daily towels, and extra pool towels to use for lounging/swimming. During out stay we saw the staff constantly cleaning and maintaining the property. Lastly, the cost of the room was so cheap and comparable to some hostels in the area, so for everything this hotel offered we thought it was fantastic value! In skimming through some other reviews, I note that there are complaints about not being able to check-in early and lack of service at the beach bar. We were able to check-in 3 hours early as our room was ready and this was not an issue. We also had great service at the beach bar. The waitress was always present, only disappearing momentarily to grab a food or drink order from the kitchen. I never felt like I had to go find her, although service was occasionally slow when there were several other parties at the beach bar. CONS: We stayed in the Double Room with Mountain View. The Wifi was not as strong in the room as it was at the beach bar. Despite having lots of windows, all of the windows looked out into the common area of the hotel where people/workers walk by, so we did not feel comfortable opening the curtains. Unfortunately this made the room feel dark and smaller than it is. The room is advertised as having a balcony, but it is just a separate entrance through the bathroom that leads to an outdoor corridor shared with the other rooms. The windows and doors in the bathroom are not completely sealed so we had many bugs in the bathroom. The pool itself is tiny and not swimmable by any means. It's really meant for children to splash in, although this isn't much of a problem though as the lake is right there and is great for swimming in.

Posada del Bosque Encantado

Tranquil guest house

Reviewed By Daniella G

My husband and I enjoyed spending close to a week at Posada del Bosque Encantado. It is located down a quiet alleyway and is a close walk to restaurants and to the dock. Terri, the owner, is lovely and welcoming and invited us to some open mike nights. The Mayan family who manage the Posada were also friendly. Many days, they were working together with family/friends to process cacao. They explained the process and were happy for me to join them in sorting the cacao beans. Highly recommend.

DO NOT STAY HERE! Even the volunteers quit!

Reviewed By mobyalex

The WORST hostel owner I've ever encountered! I only stayed there for one night when I had planned several days. It was Friday night roughly 6pm, most of the hostel guests were from Isreal and they got together to cook for their Shabbat dinner, they were cooking food for everyone staying at the hostel which was very nice of them to do for strangers that they had met that day. Fast forward to 8pm, every guest from the hostel was having dinner together in the common area, my girlfriend and I were fascinated by their culture and learning a bunch about their culture/religion. Then out of no where the owner starts screaming at the top of his lungs at us, "SHUT THE F*CK UP, SHUT THE FU*K UP, I WILL COME DOWN THERE AND FU*K YOU GUYS UP, JUST SHUT THE FU*K UP". We all just stopped what we were doing and were shocked at what just happened, this was about 9pm and it wasn't late, we weren't loud and the common area is located at the farthest end of the hostel, far away from any rooms. The owner just kept screaming at us. I would not recommend this place to any fellow travelers, definitely not family friendly either. After this whole incident, everyone that witnessed it left the next day, even their volunteers/employees.

Not good in so many ways, except for total isolation

Reviewed By lisabee011235

Jinava has LOTS of issues. Let’s start with the obvious: location. It’s remote and quiet, but people really should understand how this works: you reach the hotel’s reception area by descending about a hundred steep, uneven stone stairs and paths from the main road into San Marcos, and many of the rooms are further below that. There is no way to contact the reception area to request help with bags, so you’re on your own (get used to it! That will be how you feel the entire time - any time you need anything, you have to go to Reception and bang on the locked door until someone comes to talk to you). The schlep back up all those steps to the road, then down into town to the dock, is substantial - I’m in good shape, but it is a hike each way, plus you’re at altitude. I literally would not brave those steps if it rained, and even in optimal weather you probably will only want to do the r/t once per day at most. The casitas by the water are pretty and spacious (some of the higher-up rooms are cramped and dark). Shortly after I arrived, I came back from exploring the grounds to see 5 black spiders the size of my palm crawling on the walls. The staff offered to move me to another room or spray spidey-strength Raid all over mine; I opted for Raid and slept in its fumes. Toiletries consist of one small hotel bottle of shampoo and one thin bath towel. The restaurant is severely limited in options and the food is mediocre. The restaurant blares crappy Muzak covers of 90s pop hits all day and evening, including from speakers near the hammocks and my casita. Since I was the only guest, I finally asked them to turn it off after a smooth jazz rendition of Nirvana. Adding to this surreal aspect, the restaurant is decorated with four objects d’art: a hutch full of empty alcohol bottles, a painting of Jesus looking very disappointed, a picture of Jimi Hendix, and a plaque from Skull and Bones. Breakfast is not included, but the coffee is good. The staff - all men - is sweet and polite, but it’s obvious none of them has much experience with the hospitality industry. I decided shortly after I arrived that I would change my plans and leave after 2 days instead of the 4 I had booked. I was told that I would be charged 35% for the 2 days I will not be here. The hotel only accepts cash, and the only ATM in San Marcos is out of order, so I am out of cash after paying my tab for the coming two days (days when I will be staying somewhere else). So... I am not eating dinner because I am out of cash. The hotel also does not offer free bottles of water, only refills for your bottle, and I lost my reusable bottle so I have nothing they can fill. Lastly, I have to spend 125Q for a private boat tomorrow because I can’t carry my bag (full of donated sports equipment for local kids) up all these stairs. I wish I loved it here. It is peaceful in many ways. Maybe if all I wanted to do was lie in a hammock, jump in the lake a few times, or hang out with a lover with no interruptions (except big spiders). It is undeniably a pretty place, but it is about 5% ready to deal with foreign tourists. I sat in the restaurant tonight crying with frustration and disappointment until the sad, sweet porter sat down next to me saying over and over, “no es mi culpa!” I agreed that it was not his fault. Jungles contain spiders. This is a mountainous region, so there are lots of ascents and descents. But I feel pretty screwed on the payment issues, and the owners need to bring up the entire mindset from a hostel-backpacker mentality if they want to appeal to foreign visitors.

Guatemala trip

One of the most beautiful, private, and quiet places we have ever been to. It is definitely one of the highlights of your trip to Guatemala. We had an amazing view from our room, we could see the lake and some of the volcanos in the background. The swing is a must. We also went kayaking in the lake, a lot of FUN. Our time there was amazing. Just as amazing as the bathrooms. It was like in the movies, all rustic, immerse in nature, hippie, just out of this world. If you stay there, make sure you are ready to walk (which is good exercise) and jump into the lake from the reserve. Highly recommended!!!!!
