We loved this hotel. The grounds are gorgeous. There are a huge variety of blooming and interesting plants. Hummingbirds are zooming everywhere. The room was clean and very cozy. Included breakfasts were delicious and the service was excellent. Dinners eaten there were also very good.

Hotel Savegre’s services are the perfect complement for every nature lover seeking a memorable experience. We offer 41 rooms, bar and restaurant, day spa, conference room, laundry service, shuttle service, tours and related activities, as well as our beautiful gardens and impressive private reserve with its extensive network of trails. Our helpful and genuinely friendly staff are the hotel’s signature feature. The Chacon family, pioneers in the San Gerardo de Dota region have been operating the hotel since its inception and it has always been our utmost aim to provide top-quality service that goes hand in hand with the environment.
A truly beautiful valley within the cloud forest. The lodge’s gardens were delightful and attracted a variety of birds. The lodge owns a large potion of the forest and the trails they have set up make for excellent hikes (they are graded 1-5; a note of caution- the Bird trail graded 1, easy, is actually quite challenging, more of a 2/3). The guide (Raoul) for our quetzal trip was very knowledgeable and it was amazing to see a whole quetzal family; although not guaranteed (they are birds after all) this is the best place to see them. There is a private garden on site with a large variety of hummingbirds (donations only) which I would recommend. Helpful, friendly staff. The food is well prepared and imaginative, mainly with local produce grown on site- be aware that you need to tell the front desk the time you wish to eat. The lodge operates on eco principles, using solar power to heat the showers, so at times they run out (so you might suddenly find you are in a very cold shower!) Our room was quite dark, as it was the end of the run; it might be an idea to ask for a light room when checking in.

The top master suite was very expensive and overpriced. It was well past its best/sell by date. Uncomfortable lumpy mattress. Old furniture and furnishings. Old armchairs on the patio! Bathroom and cupboards not properly clean and dust/mold on window cills of bathroom. Floor looked unclean. Toothpaste on taps and tiles. Think twice before staying here! Did not stay a second night and the unpleasant manager, who only worked from 12.00 pm, refused to accept our complaints and reimburse a night. We were reasonable in our expectation of a refund of one night and had not asked for compensation for the poor quality accommodation the first night. But to date no refund has been received, so we will be taking this matter further. We note a previous review recently where guests had stayed 4 days and no cleaning had been done!! To add injury to insult there was no yoghurt/granola at breakfast as they had mis managed this as well.

Rustic. Simple but perfect in its own way. Will return.

Located on the headwaters of Savegre River (designated as cleanest river in all Middle America by the FAO), within the new UNESCO Savegre Biosphere, the Valle del Quetzal Privat Nature Reserve maintains more than 500 acres (200 ha) under an environmental protection contract with FONAFIFO, most of which is primary Cloud Oak Forest between 2400 and 3000 m elevation (8200 to 10,000 ft). We have many nature trails including along a mile of exclusive river frontage with excellent Trout fishing, bird watching and pure natural beauty.
I could not recommend staying here highly enough. If you want a peaceful place to be surrounded by nature, to bird watch, or to just relax and get away from the world, Quetzal Valley Cabins are a paradise. You really are in the heart of the forest, and the views from the windows are incredible. You can see so many different species of birds just whilst sitting and having your breakfast. There are some nice little trails on the property as well as access to other trails in the area, and San Gerardo de Dota is one of the most beautiful places we've ever been. The cabins are beautifully rustic and the kitchen was well equipped with the shop just up the (very steep) road. The wood burning stove makes the cabin cosy in the cold evenings, and it is such a relaxing place to be. All in all, we had a perfect stay for the four nights we were here - Peter, the owner, was very helpful with advice and tips, and really made us feel welcome. We wish we could have stayed longer, and will definitely be back if possible in the future!

TL/DR: 5th star missing because of no outlets that are useable by the bed and repetitive breakfasts. Still highly recommend. Everything everyone said in the reviews is true. It is well run and the hosts are always easy to find and helpful. It is a very small property with only 3 or 4 rooms available so book as soon as you can or miss out! The included breakfast was very good but half a point comes off for how repetitive it is. You have 4 choices but one is a fruit plate, one is just pancakes (no eggs or bacon to fill you up), and I don't remember the last one. The best and obvious choice is the traditional breakfast with rice and beans, eggs, plantains, fruit and so on. so .5 a star less than perfect. Great bathroom but be careful the tile is slick. Huge comfortable room with two full sized beds and a sitting area with a table and 2 chairs plus a sofa. Tons of space. The beds are fabulous and cozy. The one negative is they installed the headboard to the wall in a way that makes it impossible to use the bedside outlets. An easy fix would be to add some space between the headboard and the wall. Even though there are plenty of outlets in the room not having one by the bed is a real problem if you use a CPAP or if, like me, you like to have your phone on the bedside table. so half a star off for the design fail.

The owner was extremely helpful and had good English. The cabin was very nice with everything we needed and the restaurant just the other side of the road was great. It has a deck outside that looks onto a bird feeding station with loads of hummingbirds, woodpeckers etc using it and very sunny spot to enjoy the peace and quiet. Shame we couldnt stay longer!

This is the second time I’ve stayed here and love supporting a Tico family. David and his dad run the place and it’s obvious it’s a labor of love. The cabins are comfortable, we asked for a better heater and David brought us two of them. It is a cold place. The trails and waterfalls are lovely. All the hummingbirds are amazing. Great place down the road to see quetzals, at 5:30 a.m. The shower wasn’t the best, little pressure and only warm water. For the price, and the Tico hospitality, it was well worth a visit.

The lodge is run by a family and each and every member was kind and helpful. The provided breakfast was delicious and really good and the coffee was great. There was wifi in the reception/restaurant area but not in the cabins. The cabins are a bit up the hill from the restaurant but not too far. Dinner was also available from 5-7 each night and was delicious (trout from their ponds) but a little pricey. The room/cabin was spotless and furnished nicely; however, it gets really cold in the mountains and the room was a bit drafty. Adequate blankets are provided. Falling asleep to the sound of the river was wonderful. They also helped to set up a tour to see the quetzal in the morning and my guide, Carlos, was great. This place isn't fancy but it was a good deal and I would definitely stay here again. Info for those planning a visit: I had problems with the hot water, but found out from another guest that you have to run the water slowly - not full force if you want a warm shower. The family speaks very little English but, while it was challenging, I practiced my Spanish and learned a few things in the process. Oh! And the road in is 'interesting' but that's true for any places in this valley including the expensive resorts.
