Things to do in Saint Helens

When Houlton Bakery first opened in St. Helens it was like nothing the two had previously seen. The proprietors, Gainor and Joe, were experienced restauranteurs and immediately began serving up fresh baked breads and pastries, then added sandwiches and pizza, until the place had a fiercely loyal following of regular customers, drawn there daily by the small but varying menu shored up by a few much-beloved regular items (Joe's tamari almonds, for example).
In late 2013, a dispute with the landlord moved the original owners to sell the business. Since then it has changed hands at least once more and although now retaining the original name, it is a mere shadow of what it once was. With St. Helens having no other such establishments, I gave it a few valiant tries, hoping to find something in its new incarnation that would bring me back to it; however each time I left disappointed. The magic was gone.
It's not that what Houlton's now sells is bad or of poor quality, it's just that it's no longer anything special - certainly not what it once was. Would that the new owners had changed the name, such comparisons would not be either made to it's former existence nor would they be necessary. However as things stands, such assessments are not only natural, they are essential for the benefit of any and all who might once have been told by an old Houlton's patron of what a superb bakery was to be found in St. Helens. "Was" now being the operative word.

Steak And Seafood
It's an old-timey restaurant and bar in the upstairs of an old riverfront hotel. It's a good choice for a reasonably priced meat-and-potato meal. The hamburgers are very good and the service is friendly. Their fries, which are the basic side dish for everything, are limp and greasy though. That has to be their preferred way to serve them but, unfortunately, not the way I enjoy them. But the main courses and the service make up for the fries. This is the old waterfront part of St. Helens which is worth a stop for the old buildings, the City Hall, and the river passing by.

The staff/cooks of this restaurant are some of the nicest people. They do a lot of wonderful things for local charities, etc. Now let me tell you about the food. Yummy!
Reasonable prices. You get a lot of food. Everything I have tried has been outstanding. I can't go as often I would like...daily...because I would weigh 400 lbs.
Seriously...don't even hesitate. Go! Enjoy! You will be full and happy.

The caramel apple spice is fantastic on a cold winter day and the decor is Bohemian and appropriate for reading a paper or working on your laptop while munching some great banana bread. Quick service, good food.

Scheduled a morning trip to Saint Helens for DMV and City Hall business saw all the amazing Halloween decorations around town decided to walk the park along the river noticed Dockside Steak and Pasta restaurant on side street looked like a nice place to have an early dinner. Did a few more errands and made a special trip back to Saint Helens just to give it a try.... Walked in and was greeted by a very nice waitress. She sat us in a booth next to 3 youngsters that were so loud I think they thought they were the only customers maybe the had a few puffs before enjoying some liquids....needless to say we asked to be moved...it was Happy Hour and both menus looked great, prices are high for a small town( worth it if they prove it) opted for dinner I ordered a pasta with a hazelnut and mushroom cream sauce sounded delightful...my other half decided on a Chicken Marsala .... we split a sald ....2 local beers. Then we waited and waited...NO Bread was offered !!! Come On it's Italian....40 min later it arrived...my dish was hot..Chicken Marsala arrived with a slight chill, maybe partially defrosted... the waitress was nice and took it back to the kitchen..there I sat with my Hazelnut, Mushroom pasta dish eating alone looking across the table at a very unhappy sweetie.... I offered bites of my dish until another unsuccessful try to get it right could not happen.....2 strikes and your OUT!!! Waitress was very sweet apologized for bad timing and took Chicken Marsala off the bill.... left sad, disappointed, frustrated that we wasted an evening in Oregon knowing there are fabulous places to dine....on the drive back home Taco Bell Drive-Thru saved the night...

You watch ads on TV and it shows these beautiful full sandwiches and then you go to the store and order the same thing and it is maybe 1/4 inch thick with meat & cheese. The only way to make it look like on TV it to stuff it with veggies. Those ads are false

The food is top-notch and prices are reasonable. The service is wonderful as is the mural work on the walls. Warning: if you order their "medium" margarita, expect to get a glass the size of a pitcher. A wonderful evening with friends or family. All around great place to eat.

This is your standard chinese restaurant with above standard food. They have a bit of everything on their menu and they are very generous with the portions. The restaurant is clean and the servers are friendly and efficient. You won't find the out-of-the-ordinary chinese food here but the food they serve is quite good. Love the wor wonton soup.
