This tented lodge is the first of its kind in Rwanda. Ruzizi is built on the forested shores of Lake Ihema, Rwanda’s second-largest lake. With only 9 tents, a maximum of 20 guests, the camp is a quiet and intimate retreat. A thatched central lounge area is accessible by boardwalks from each tent, and a large deck under a shaded fig tree. Entirely powered by solar.
I have stayed at Ruzizi Tented Lodge a total of more than 25 days since they first opened and I wrote a glowing review many years ago. However, they have just continued to improve. Service levels are amazing and Jado, the manager, and dedicated camp staff work to accommodate special needs and interests in every way. The rooms are beautifully appointed, comfortable with flush toilets, showers and lavatories. Treetop is amazing with an outdoor shower and large bathtub and a great view of Lake Ihema. You can recharge at electrical sockets in several locations in each room. Weʻve seen hippos and elephants in the front yard of tent cabins, though elephants stayed behind the electrical wire that discourages their entry. Meals on the deck at Lake Ihema are wonderful. We bring groups of ten on ecotours and they love the amazing birdwatching from the deck, not to mention hippos surfacing, crocodiles cruising by and fish eagles catching fish in close proximity. On our night drive we saw lions and a leopard, amazing. The boat trip on Lake Ihema is wonderful with bush buck, Cape buffalo, hippos, African darters and more. Kudos are due African Parks Foundation, RDB, and the amazing staff of Akagera National Park for this great support of Ruzizi and the unique camp experience, the best we have seen during dozens of stays at remote bush camps.

Magashi is situated in the productive and diverse north-eastern corner of Akagera National Park, overlooking beautiful Lake Rwanyakazinga. Akagera comprises some of the most scenic savannah in East Africa – open plains, woodlands, lakes, swamp, and grassy low mountains – and is home to one of Africa’s highest hippo densities, some very large crocodiles as well as well as the rare sitatunga.
We had a wonderful stay at Magashi Camp in Akagera. Luke was our safari guide and he was the best; so astute, sharp and knowledgable.. we thoroughly enjoyed spending morning and evening drives with him as we sought out so many wonderful animals. The accommodations at Magashi are very lovely, tents are "glamping" and they are wonderful, overlooking the Lake. The entire staff at Magashi are friendly and accommodating, meals were so very tasty and Charles is the best bartender around... mixing up craft cocktails for poolside lounging, lakeside animal spotting or firepit story-telling. Such a wonderful place and bucket-list safari experience.

The PeakSpot rests on six acres of pristinely manicured grounds on the edge of the Virunga Forest. The property is lush with local flora, attracting a wide array of local birds and other animals. On the property sit five stone bungalows built in the local style with locally sourced materials (two single bungalows, two double bungalows, and one family cottage). Each bungalow has an en-suite bathroom with flush toilet, hot and cold running water for showers, fresh linens and towels, and electrical outlets. The interiors feature brightly colored furnishings, textiles, and handicrafts in the local style, all of which are sourced locally and fairly from our village neighbors. Tent camping is available in the gardens with the option to either rent a tent or bring your own. Guests with tent accommodation have access to flush toilets and showers. All PeakSpot accommodations include a warm and nutritious breakfast, rich with local fruits and produce.
We were excited to go and they were very helpful at first in arranging our stay and animal permits. Unfortunately Rwanda imposed Covid restrictions that banned entry via Uganda, so we were not allowed to go. We asked for a refund and they agreed to a partial refund and asked for our bank account information, which I sent. We've now been waiting for a refund for over four months and they've stopped responding to our emails. We've lost $800 and I'm nervous about having sent the bank account details.

Karenge is a Seasonal Bush Camp is Akagera National Park, Rwanda. 'Karenge' means 'small foot' in the local language, Kinyarwanda. The camp is simple, serene, low impact and, located in Akagera's north. It offers great access to some of the best wildlife viewing in the park. Fully staffed and catered for, and with just 6 tents and a maximum of 12 guests, the camp is a quiet retreat. Each tent sleeps two people on comfortable camp beds, raised on simple decks, with solar lights and lanterns for light. Warm water is provided daily in ensuite bathrooms next to each tent which have bucket showers and toilets. Solar fridges keep drinks cold in the bar. The camp is full board so all meals are included. 100% of the profits go towards the conservation and management of Akagera National Park as a whole. Karenge makes a great combination when combined with Ruzizi Tented Lodge in the south of the park.
My husband and I stayed at Karenge for two nights - WOW! What an incredible place. The tents are very basic, with outdoor showers and dry toilets, so it’s not for everyone, but the staff do a wonderful job of making it comfortable, and the food is delicious. The location, overlooking the plain, is incredibly special, and the sounds of lions roaring (from a safe distance!) will put you to sleep. It was so special and I’m so grateful we got to stay there.

Combined camp site and restaurant on an island in Lake Kivu, Rwanda.
After half an hour of boating, we were about to enter Peace Island. I couldn’t find this name on the map, so I pinned this location on my attached map. The landing place was the best for a day’s trip. Actually, it was a cluster of three to four small islets. We explore the complete island and took our desired shots. Many other groups were also coming and going from this island. So, after spending an hour or less there we again boarded into our boat to our next island stop.

We wanted to test our new tent and set up camp at Cyohoha. A great place. It is spacious and nicely situated at the lake bordering Burundi. Joseph is building a paradise, even with a volley court and a small beach. Although we normally don't swim in Rwandan lakes due to bilharzia risk, we decided to jump in. There is one canoe for two people you can hire. There are many birds on the site. They grow their own vegetables and have chickens. Food is simple but well prepared. Toilets are basic but very clean. There are rooms and set up tents. The place is lit by solar power. The staff is very friendly. There is a new tarmac road so it is only two hours from Kigali. The last seven kilometers is on a good dustroad.

Kitabi Eco-Center (KEC) is located just 2 km from the Eastern entrance to Nyungwe National Park. It sits atop Mount Kitabi, and offers one of the most spectacular, panoramic views in all of Rwanda: terraced farms perched on endless hills; light green tea plantations that frequent this region; the dark green trees of Nyungwe Forest; and a seemingly endless sky. You have to be here to experience it! We have 8 campsites, and if needed, you can rent camping equipment. KEC also has a replica of the Nyanza King's Palace for overnight stays. There is a Queen bed there, and you can add additional mattresses, if necessary. We also have 2 Prince's Palaces with two twin beds each. We have a bar/resto with a great view! We also have amazing food, Rwandan coffee, and tea picked and processed nearby. We also offer EcoTours around the park with a focus on the evironment, local medicinal plants, and stories of successful conservation efforts in the community. So, please, come stay with us!
A stunning place to stay. Amazing views, nice people, good food. The only issue was the tour they offered, which supposedly included a tour of the beehives, a trip to a woman’s crafts centre, and info on local tea production. In fact it included none of this, yet we were still charged full price. Aside from this, however, it was a very nice stay.
