Attended for christening function at The Heywood. My first time in this function suite was a pleasant experience. The buffet was above average and continually topped up by the many staff. The various meats were of a good quality and overall the buffet was much better than others I have eaten. Definately a place to keep in mind for any function.

Had many good meals here - but today the Jacket potato with chilli beef was a huge disappointment - virtually no mince as filling, and server not interested in my feedback.I know they can do lots better - but consistency of delivery and management are important.

Visited on Sunday, last minute decision. Pub was quiet, opted for seating in the restaurant, seated quickly however waited quite a while for drinks and then food order to be taken. Only 2 staff working who were rushing round serving bar food and restaurant. Ordered beef roast dinner and turkey Roast, our son ordered sizzling tikka masala. Potatoes were undercooked, bowl of veg likewise and the turkey dry. Attempted to request additional gravy but gave up. Not a cheap pub meal and left feeling disappointed, would like to think it was just a ‘bad day’ but there seems to be similar reviews.

Had the chilli. Very nice. Slight smokey flavour from the brisket. Came with little cups of cheese, jalepenos and v nice sour cream to add as much or as little as required. No problem with me having half rice half chips.Staff and delivery , second nature, no awkwardness and confidence in delivery. Slick and quick. Its family run , they have seen it all probably over decades and it shows. Table service for drinks not too much trouble and attentive. The menu looks interesting and traditional, with just enough modern aspects to make it up to date for the youngsters. You can tell they think things through here with good old fashioned common sense.Everywhere clean , plenty of parking. Busy between 5-8 on a Tuesday night says it all.Price wise, 11 for the chilli is fine. Sure a bit pricey for what it is, but hardly an expensive place to eat in comparison to gastro pubs.Well done. Ill be back when in area working and will be my default place to eat while staying in a local hotel.

After waiting over forty minutes in a near empty restaurant ( yes, that should have alerted us!) we went to find the waitress to order. From arriving as booked it took one hour and ten minutes to get our main meal. As most of us were on parking meters this caused some anxiety. Two meals got sent back as they were cold. One other meal wasnt eaten at all, my crushed peas were stone cold. All served on cold, very chipped plates. Went to find my own salt and pepper. I would have complained about my stone cold peas but with only one waitress running up and down the stairs with the sent back meals, there was no-one to complain to. This is not particularly cheap food so I expected better basics, like hot and timely food. Pudding was OK but not enough custard on it. Very disappointing group outing. Won’t be returning.

Visited tonight with friends; food was lovely, good service and tasty. Large portions which meant I wasn’t able to finish main (steak) after a starter, steak was cooked perfectly. Not the cheapest pub food; but reasonable.Had a couple of gins, great selection, and sat chatting.Last orders at 11.30, not unusual, then abruptly asked if we had a taxi booked, we were just about to order one, then told it was closing time, we had a taxi ordered and dispatched at this point; then lights were turned off in the dining area where we were, then told ‘I’m locking up now’ by whom we’d assume was the landlady. None of this would be an issue if this person wasn’t so rude and there wasn’t still a dozen people in the pub, some with fairly full pints; who weren’t approached to ‘drink up’ or told several times it was ‘home time’. Rather rude and we left feeling we probably wouldn’t return. The rudeness of one staff member ruined a nice casual evening of good food and drinks and a friendly catch up. We left feeling as weren’t ‘regulars’ we were treated this way which isn’t the way to encourage people back to an establishment. Hello JoanneI'm the Landlady at the Grapes, and yes, that was me. I'm so, so sorry if you felt I was rude and abrupt - it was certainly not my intention, so please accept my apologies. I can, though, assure you that both groups of gents remaining in the pub were definitely told the same as you - asked if they had taxis, then advised that we were locking up. I'm not sure how you didn't hear this as one of the groups was sat very close to you. We do this to be polite and helpful to customers, so that they know we'll be locking up soon. Regulars or not, we treat all customers the same, and hope that non-regulars become regulars, so I'm sorry that you feel I let you down last night. We try really hard to make this a comfy, welcoming place, but with the best will in the world, there has to be a time where we close the doors, and we feel it's polite to let customers know so that they can arrange transport or finish drinks. We didn't turn off the lights in the dining area. We dim all the lights in the pub soon after last orders. The lights, in fact, can't be "turned off" except by a master switch upstairs. We're really pleased that you enjoyed your food. We're not the "cheapest pub food"; you're right, but we do think that starters from just £3.95 and main courses going up to just £13.95 for "tasty", "cooked perfectly" food is very, very good value, especially, as you point out, as the portions are large. We're proud of our gin selection, so are pleased you enjoyed a few of those. I'm sorry to hear that you probably wouldn't return, but hope you'll reconsider and give us (me!) another chance.

Came in yesterday as I was working remotely and had had enough of my house. Was pleasantly surprised to find that there was new management and a new menu. I’m vegetarian so good food is hard to come by! Jasmine and Reece were amazing and the food was top. I only had a cheese sandwich but they made me homemade chips and they were awesome. Definitely going to be making this my new local!Absolute best bit- they have a rescue puppy who is absolutely gorgeous and lovely but, before bringing her out, made sure everyone was comfortable with a dog being around. Pet friendly pubs are the best!

We will definitely be back soon. Hi. Thank you for your kind review. I am leaving this review after already emailing feedback directly to The Bird. Their lack of response speaks volumes about their level of customer care. When we booked the table we were informed that the bar was not available due to a private function. This was fine, so arranged to visit another pub prior to arriving so we could have pre-dinner drinks. What was not explained was the impact the function would have on our evening. On arrival we had to walk straight through the middle of a very noisy wedding reception, live act playing, across the dance floor to access the stairs. This was a route that had to be repeated every time you wanted the toilets and to leave at the end of the night. This was extremely awkward and not something I would expect to have to do.Once shown to our table we stood up to leave due to the noise of the live act filtering through the floor. The live act, combined with the music from the restaurant and vibrating floor made it impossible to hear ourselves think let alone have a conversation.Another table was prepared on the opposite side of the restaurant where we continued our evening, with slightly less noise but with the live act still clearly audible. With regards to the service, we felt hurried throughout the meal with 2 different waitresses asking if we were enjoying the food, prior to us even tasting it. Dessert menus were provided and 30 seconds later we were being asked for our dessert order. The Irish coffee that was served had to be sent back as it quite literally tasted like dish water. We both left The Bird very disappointed, agreeing that would be our last visit. The layout of the venue is not suitable for both private events and public dining simultaneously. Also, although friendly and polite the young service team really need direction from someone with more Customer service experience to teach and develop them, and learn how to build a rapport with the customers.
