I was part of a group of 40 men's choir members who all descended upon the "zur Post" for a seasonal dinner together. Serving a large group such as ours, and at the same time serving a house full of regular guests is not an easy job, but the family and staff of the Post handled it all beautifully. We ordered off of a special menu for the occasion, and the service was fast and efficient. No wish went unattended, and the attention to detail was amazing. Zilshausen is not the center of activity in Germany, but if it gets to be mealtime, and you are in the Hunsrück, Landgasthof Zur Post is well worth the detour, and of course you can see some of the wonderful Hunsrück landscape on the way. The food is very well prepared, the presentation is top class, and the portions are generous for the price paid. It's a family business, and they and their staff will make you feel at home in the rustic setting. There is free parking, a great "Biergarten" for summers, and very nice rooms in their hotel section. and if you are vacationing in the Hunsrück, they are only 6.5 km from the Geierlay Suspension Bridge.

This was not our first visit to this restaurant ; the food is excellent and this restaurant is certainly amongst the better restaurants in the region - the kitchen is above the (good) standard in the Hunsrück, and would certainly fit with the German description of "gehobener Küche", the atmosphere is cosy and the service was friendly and swift. The menu varies with the seasons, but offers always a good choice of meals to everyone's tast. However, during our last visit, the service was absolutely below par. We had to wait for 45 minutes just to have our drinks to be ordered ! Total time between our arrival and start of our meal was 1Hr and 20 minutes ( and we arrived at 19:30, when most of the other tables were having coffee or dessert...). On purpose, I did not ask why the service was that slow, and nobody cared to explain... The owner, Frau Baumann is also the coock, and she offers fantastic meals. I sincerely hope she can find the proper personnel to provide a matching table service.

The Pfalzer Stube is an amazing place. It is located in a small village in the Hunsrück and is a center for local meets, looking rather large for such a small town. The menu is not really large, but the typical local dishes that are on it are outstanding. Made with loving care, the chef obviouslyknows his clientele and produces dishes that they want. Great, local fare, at great prices, and made with fresh local products. The staff is extremely friendly, giving quick personal service. They are especially good at serving large groups. We tried several of their Schnitzels, and will definitely come back again. Incidentally, bring some hunger with you, because the portions are generous. Hunsrücker also spoken here!

Not merely a cafe in a castle, this has fine-dining capabilities. And of course if all you want is a cup of coffee or a beer, that's fine too. Portions are huge and not especially expensive. The decor is interestingly traditional, and the terrace outside is bounded by some replica stocks, and the craggy walls of the castle in which the restaurant sits. It's a very popular Sunday lunch spot - so you may wish to reserve a table.

Altes Stadttor used to be a great restaurant, with very nice local food in a brilliant environment. Unfortunately, my recent experience is that they have tried to make the place more upscale and failed. The food in Altes Stadttor is still very nice without anything wrong: Salad plates are generous and even childrens' portions are carefully prepared. I like to see that a restaurant respects their young customers as much as their parents. In my opinion removing famous German dishes from the menu was a mistake and a big disappointment. If I want upscale dining, I can't see myself going to Altes Stadttor. Because of this the place which used to be "Very Good" gets now only "Average" rating.
