Located on the Strand Rd, this cozy and friendly restaurant/guest house serves some of the most commonly eaten dishes among Japanese. We were passing by in one afternoon after having had lunch elsewhere, but we couldn't help stopping by at this pleasant looking place.
The menu was comprised of a good selection of approachable dishes such as katsu don (pork cutlet and egg on rice), yakitori (BBQ chicken), and korokke (deep fried mashed potato). The menu comes with photos. The selection seemed to have considered the use of locally available ingredients, hence no sushi, no sashimi. The price was affordable.
I was advised by the chef that the owner is Japanese and trained the chef.
We tried buta kakuni, braised pork. Yummy. Cost us 2000 kyat ($2).
In a peaceful part of the town and with a view of the river, all very pleasant.

Medium sized quiet restaurant in a garden up a small lane off the main road with closed AC room and outdoor terraces. Good car park always useful.
Large selection of tasty well presented dishes, a fair amount of fish (good eel also), mainly Chinese style. Staff very attentive, with no particular language barriers.
A pleasant and restful place to stop for a very acceptable meal.

Grandma Cafe is located on the street where the night market is close to the river in Pyay. It's a small, pleasant restaurant with a few tables frequented by tourists and locals alike. The owner, so we understand, is a Burmese woman who worked in Malaysia and learned to cook Korean food. The fried chicken and fries portion was small but for the price you can order more - it was so tasty we came back the next night.
Recommended for a change of taste from Burmese or Chinese in Pyay.

The staircase to the first floor of this restaurant is rather steep. And to climb up to the second floor is like climbing up a fire exit. So watch your steps especially during the wet season. The toilets downstairs are not for the fainthearted. Since the whole building is owned by the restaurant, it is their responsibility to keep the toilets clean. But this is Mawlamyine, what do they know about hygiene? The food price is reasonable although it reflects on the portion on the plate. When there are four of us eating, we would order four of five different dishes, not including rice. They serve Tuborg draft beer in a three litre 'giraffe' dispenser. The manager listened to us when we asked him to cut off the wooden bars under the tables which stopped you from sitting comfortably. Several evenings a week, there are live Performances with varying degrees of quality.

Our guide and driver dropped us at this Ayeyarwady River side restaurant for lunch to break up our sightseeing day around Pyay. From Pyay it's just down Strand Rd close to and with a view of the Nawaday Bridge. The views are pleasant, nothing spectacular. When we were there the sunflowers between the restaurant and river were in bloom which was an added bonus. The menu was quite varied and tourist priced. Mostly Chinese dishes. Nothing too memorable but just fine. I'm not sure I would go back but it is a safe bet for a decent meal in Pyay with a river view.
