Ristorante La Speranza

Was in the area, and was looking for something to share with fellow "tourists" off the beaten track, and leaning towards the more pure local environment/ savors and tastes.. and thought I would give it a try! well... arrived and it was full.. so was ready for a sorry we are full, and bye bye. instead, was invited to wait 15 minutes, which I thought well why not....After 5 mins only, we were shown to a table, and menu was given... yes it is local as basic Italian is helpful, though not necessary.. it was busy but service was efficient, and timing between dishes, put perfect for a more relaxed lunch Italian style. Pasta dishes. well no comment, an array to pick all with definite local tastes, with a no frills portion, and could not "not" finish...., and the house red wine...(I recommend) help us along. we ordered steak grilled , and I had wild boar, and a mix grill plate, and had to try them all--- boar and steak excelled! greens and accompanying dishes (not order to many!!! as you have to leave some space for desert) Desert to finish off. overall I can say top marks, yes a no frill restaurant, filled with from what I could see locals, government officials, and truck drivers, and.-... yes us in minority "tourists".. a mix that could only determine a good result, well It was in fact more than good! and the price paid I would determine it as more that balanced for what we ate and its quality and service. So do try it! but it is not the Hilton!!! so don't come if you expect to be treated as a tourist, here you are just a customer, a valued customer at that! treated as a local! and pay like a local, what else could one want! I can do without the tourist shenanigans, this restaurant in on my return to list! Local ambiance, local food, but I give it a generous 5 star. I have great difficulty is seeing how one could not be more that happy here... we were and I will return!

Il Piattoforte

Nice restaurant with stunning view from the terrace, typical tuscan dishes cooked with love, biological vegetable garden and products to taste

Our first night in Montiguidi so myself and my girlfriend thought we would give this place a try as it is walking distance from our villa! The menu was in Italian with no english translation however the waitress spoke very good english and was more than happy to help. I ended up ordering two fillet steaks cooked to how we like topped with green salad leaves and Parmigiano-Reggiano, I also ordered a side serving of deep fried vegetables and a glass of red wine. The steaks came out with no fries or sauces as I would normally expect in the UK. Literally just the steak on a plate that had been lightly seasoned. This was such a nice thing to see, it allows you to really get a flavour of the steak rather than it being masked by your standard peppercorn sauce. This steak was by far one of the best I've ever eaten, very well cooked to my liking (medium rare) and just falls apart in your mouth. The deep fried vegetables was also a first for me. They were very nice too, ill be attempting to make them when I get back home. We both liked the restaurant very much. Nice atmosphere and great service, ill definitely be eating here again before we leave!

La Miniera

May be hard to find at first. We were given the reccommendation by the farm we were staying at, La Selva, which is on the same road. Also nearby is a pony club/ riding school. It is a few kms outside Siena center.

We were tired after taking numerous wrong turns on our drive from Pisa to Siena and instead of our estimated 5:30 arrival at Agroturismo La Selva, got there instead at 7:45. The adults were at wit's end and did not want dinner, but just to go to sleep! However, our group of 7 ranged from 8 to 72 years of age so that was not a good idea. Marco, the son of the owner of La Selva , recommended La Vecchia Miniera. We went there reluctantly, with much doubt and not much goodwill left after the long drive. What we found was a packed restaurant where although we showed up with no reservation, did not bat an eyelid or try to embarass us in any way, but got us a nice table in corner inside ( I am not European and hate sitting outside in any case), with a menu in English as well as a menu in Italian. Most of the other customers seemed to be Italian. The food was traditional with an unusual but very pleasant twist and the list of local wines were ssssssssoooooooooooooooo reasonably priced and extremely drinkable that both nights became 2 bottle nights! The bread was out of this world and even those of us (me being one) who were there for a drink and to make sure no one got lost, all ended up having three courses! On the second night, in better frame of mind, we realised that above the great food, (calzone, mussels which normally only I like but which the kids asked for the next night, pasta in wild boar sauce, best pizzas in the world!) what brought us back was also the fantastic service staff! Red (hope I got the name right) was fantastic and explained all sorts of things to us (even probably really stupid things). All the staff were great, only calling on the chap with long hair (Red) when questions got too scary. We even learned why grappa comes in two colors! And my husband, trouble maker that he is, sent my daughter to pay the bill with our English debit card, thank God, not the Singapore credit card) even though I told him a small place like this would probably only deal in cash. Again, no problem, Red sorted it out, without any fuss or embarassment to our very sensitive teenager. So, to sum up, I am sharing this because when we got back to our last stop, my mother in law's in UK, this is the place everyone remembered of our Italy trip (Rome, Florence, Siena, Venice) most. They certainly don't need the good review as they were packed the two nights we visited anyway. In fact, I would say if you you are not staying at La Selva or somewhere equally close, then please make a reservation in case you are not able to get there early enough. But this is one of the genuinely good places in life, where you don't have to pay the earth for a great experience. I have heard the diving in Sardinia is good, so I am sure I will be able to make an excuse to come back to Italy and Tuscany , in a couple of years. And I will definitely come back to this place then. Thanks for all the great memories!
