Spend a night in Iruya and walk to the neighboring San Isidro (hostel accommodation available there too). I wanted to spend a night initially, but the only accommodation I could find beforehand was a luxurious hotel on booking.com. There are numerous budget hostels in Iruya and in San Isidro. We paid only A$50 a night! Buses daily from Tilcara (Panamericano - A$100 single) or Humuhuaca (Panamericano/Bus Iruya - A$75 single).

Although this comedor, catering to local people, is a little outside the town it is worth the walk. The menu del dia is three courses, with choices, and is delicious local food. It cost 70 Argentinian pesos. As one would expect, the owners speak no English, but are friendly and welcoming.
