When we travel for fun, we look for off-the-beaten-path kinds of places. So when friends told us about ASH Sushi about 2km away from Montezuma Beach, we were both intrigued and skeptical. We don't associate the fine culinary artistry of Japanese cuisine with remote villages in Costa Rica. But nothing ventured was nothing gained, so we hopped on an ATV and took off in search of ASH. It wasn't easy to find, but the effort was worth it. There are a few modest signs that lead to this cafe. It almost felt as if we were on a scavenger hunt. So, you've got to work for it. Ultimately, you'll come across a modest house with a patio full of handcrafted wooden tables. And then the fun begins. We ordered a crab handroll, a traditional maguro sushi roll, some miso soup (a surefire way of judging the chef's craft) and tempura onion rings. All of the dishes knocked our proverbial socks off. This kitchen knew what it was doing. The fish was fresh, the soup was subtle and delicious, the sushi rice was perfectly cooked and the presentation would make the best Japanese sushi chefs a bit jealous. We ordered wine, rather than sake.....that may have been a mistake. The wine tasted like Chilean plonk. But that was the only dischordant note of an otherwise brilliant meal. The restaurant is the brainchild of two local Costa Ricans who know the restaurant business and aspired to create something different. They succeeded. The restaurant had apparently opened just a few weeks earlier, so we are essentially experiencing the soft opening. But during our lunch. a number of other guests showed up, so the word is spreading. If you find yourself in the southern Nicoya Peninsula and you have a yen for fresh, well-prepared Japanese food, this place shouldn't be missed. The prices are reasonable, the food is delicious and, best of all, you will have experienced one of those legendary overlook gems that many in the culinary world aspire to find. Great Japanese food where you'd never expect it. It's worth the effort.

We are a small family-run restaurant that serves up daily, locally caught, fresh fish, lovingly cooked in a friendly ambience near the beautiful beaches of Mal Pais, Costa Rica. We have outdoor shaded patio seating and are open Monday to Friday from 11am
The price is NOT high at all! I mean, the place looks fancy and clean so we almost didnât sit down because we thought the serving was gonna be small... wrong!! The servings are big, the service was really casual and cool, yet attentive. But the flavor: 10/10. My gosh the Sailor Bowl - creamy, toasty, nutty, fishy, just perfectly salty and kinda guilt-free cuz the rice was whole grain...If you are nearby, donât think twice before dropping by and having at least 79 Sailor Bowls on my behalf. And the fish pâte, I give you my word youâre gonna like it.So happy you enjoyed our little restaurant and took the time to wtite those enthousiastic comments!

When you are at the beach you know your choices will be limited and the prices a bit higher than in the city. Same here, but....I really enjoyed the food here, breakfast was good, lunch and dinner likewise. One of the least expensive options, with typical, well cooked food. We were here for 6 days and ate here regularly.

It has been a few years since our first visit to Soda La Naranja. We stopped in for Ceviche and beers and we were not disappointed. They really do make the best ceviche around town. Enjoyed watching the chef prepare freshest ingredients - tasting as he goes to ensure the best flavours. Love the fact that it is locally owned.

We went to H&B as a second choice when our first choice was closed. Super glad we did. It's really easy to find on the main road. We had 3 different types of casados and each was delicious. We have had many casados in various locations in CR and these were among the best. The fish was extremely fresh from the dock close by and pe f calypso cooked. The fresh fruit drinks were also delicious. The service was fast and the price was less than $25 for 4 people including drinks. There are many locals (which should say something) but you aren't treated differently as a foreigner (which is not always our experience in local restaurants). If you are in the area, do yourself a favor and stop by.

One of the current bartenders, Christina, is lovely, just darling...and like the other bartenders she makes a mean Pina Colada! We can also recommend the fish tacos and the Nicoya Fish. But, to be honest, we basically could eat Marks' Famous Nachos all day every day. :)And, the atmosphere is so beautiful and peaceful, that everything is a treat!

This hotel/restaurant has recently been taken over by new management, and the improvements are wonderful. My husband had calamari as an appetizer and shrimp for an entrée. I asked about the spaghetti, which comes in a white sauce. I wanted a red sauce, so the chef made a nice tomato sauce. It wasn't spaghetti sauce, but it was still very good.

Tasty food prepared with local ingredients. If you don't like it, you don't pay - that's our guarantee of quality.
We turned up on spec one evening and thought maybe the restaurant was closed, as there were no other diners....next surprise, the man I addressed in my carefully-rehearsed Spanish, was definitely struggling to understand me.... of course, he is a newly-arrived Canadian! But what he lacks in knowledge of Spanish he more than compensates for with his culinary abiities. He whipped us up a fresh guacamole and delicious home-made tortilla chips to keep us busy while he prepared a variety of fish and chicken dishes for us, all equally delicious. His young son came out to socialize with us and was absolutely delightful, entertaining us and amazing with his laid-back approach to creepy crawlies and snakes etc which seem to be his main interest in Costa Rica! We had a great meal and would definitely have returned had it not been our last night in the area. Highly recommended!

Went here on 23rd March while staying at Tango Mar. I phoned Judy to make a reservation on the day and she kindly picked us up (and took us back) The food was excellent particularly the steak which was one of the best I have ever eaten. Judy and her staff were friendly and attentive, the bar area and the eating area are beautiful, wine was good too definitely our best meal in Costa Rica I cannot recommend it highly enough. I was very angry at the 1 star review that was put on on the day we visited by someone who had made no reservation and got lost ( but didn't think to phone!) this place is beautiful but off the beaten track and if no one has made reservations then it doesn't open. Believe me this place deserves to be the no 1 restaurant in Tambor and the reviews are true. Thank you Judy for a great last night in Tambor.
