Reviews on Cafe food in Mal Pais, Province of Puntarenas, Costa Rica. Near the southernmost tip of Peninsula de Nicoya, Mal Pais offers rocky coves, white sand beaches, waterfalls, rainforests, surfing, and relaxation near a remote fishing village and Cabo Blanco National Park. The prime attraction is surfing at beaches like Playa Mar Azul, Playa Santa Teresa, Playa Manzanillo, and Playa Carmen. Plus there is fishing, boating, snorkeling, diving, hiking, horseback riding, biking, and 4-wheel drive touring. A 4-wheel drive vehicle comes in handy for navigating unpaved roads in this still mostly wild area, particularly during the rainy season. Though locals zip around on quad bikes and motorcycles transporting their surfboards. Allow the better part of a day driving from San Jose Costa Rica’s Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) to Mal Pais. Budget extra time to board the car ferry from Puntarenas across the Golfo de Nicoya to Paquera on the Peninsula de Nicoya. Or take the short flight from San Jose to Tambor Airport (TMU), and be within an hour of Mal Pais. Some Mal Pais beaches have little sand, and judging point break direction and swell size requires surfing acumen. A Mal Pais surf camp may be perfect for family members wanting to learn to read the surf better. Santa Teresa’s beaches have more white sand, and point breaks like Suck Rock are almost legendary among surfers flocking here when the seas around Playa Carmen get too rough. Playa Carmen has enough variety to accommodate all levels of surfers, but the swells can get too rough and too frequent to get out during the rainy season. A bit to the north, with waters calmed by a rock jetty, Playa Manzanillo is known for its annual sand castle competition.

En route to Monteverde, this community restaurant will welcome you every Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Supported by the Sustainability Demonstration Center, the Feria empowers members of the community to support themselves through selling organic, homegrown
The village was practically destroyed by flooding from Hurricane Nate last year. A group effort is underway to recreate it as a sustainable community. We met Claire, a lovely French college student who is volunteering there, and she showed our family all around (we were happy to make a donation to the effort, and you should, too). The market and restaurant are wonderful. Tico cuisine, and delicious fruit baditos (smoothies). We wish them much success! We are so thrilled to be getting back on track and this is our first review post-Hurricane Nate, so a very memorable one! It was lovely to have this family with us and we enjoyed their wonderful energy. We were grateful for their support and hope that more and more people begin to know about this lovely spot immersed in nature! It is a great place to stop before the last long stretch to Monteverde. Yes, the local women make great efforts to provide a wonderful genuine experience. There are other great home-made products too such as breads, desserts, seasonal fruit, honey, etc. Stop by and join the fun and support a rural Economic and Social Justice program of the Sustainability Demonstration Center. All the proceeds go directly to these women.

What a delicious surprise at the Centro Comercial Monteverde. Not just sweets, but a very nice selection of tasty dishes. We ordered the Casadito with slow cooked beef. It is a creative twist on the traditional Costa Rician casada. The beef was delicious, the presentation appealing. And the waffle with strawberries, wonderful! Even vegetarian/vegan choices.

I had breakfast here and it was delicious! It was extremely reasonably priced for Costa Rica, about 6000 colones for a breakfast, two coffees and an orange juice! It has free WiFi and indoor and outdoor tables! The place is really cute and the owners were really lovely. They even let me practice some of my terrible Spanish! Would definitely recommend it to anyone and wish I couldâve gone more if I was staying in Monteverde!

Weâre staying at the Monteverde Inn, which is the same property as Cafe Escondido. The food here is so good!... weâve ate in town, and itâs totally not up to scratch compared to Cafe Escondido. Traditional pizza oven , fantastic views, great service and cooking from Gustavo and Helen .. I had steak tonight , and wifey had chicken fajitas. Kids loved it too. Romantic, with family or with pals for a few beers , itâs great!... thanks guys..
