Get to Matera quickly, because it’s still relatively undiscovered by foreign tourists. In town, visit the Domenico Ridola National Museum. Matera’s real claim to fame, though, and the reason it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the extensive series of cave dwellings ("i sassi") southeast of town, first inhabited by Benedictine and Basilian monks. You’ll see individual cells, chapels, and even some churches, many adorned with Byzantine decorations and frescoes.

This was my first Italian meal in Italy and I was disappointed to say the least.Apart from us being the only people eating and the meal being finished in less than an hour, I canât understand how it is so highly rated! The waitress was lovely, very friendly and explained a little about the food. I would have to say the food was bland and over priced. Squid with chicory, a local dish, it was like eating baby food. The spaghetti with truffle and red prawn was tasty, but with only 4 small prawns on the top, again overpriced. Very expensive evening at over 100 euros for 2 of us.The restaurant itself is quirky built into the caves, but the food was nothing special and overpriced.I read reviews on trip adviser to choose restaurants and the reviews highly rate this place, hence our visit. Look around Matera for more options. The food here is not spectacular and is over priced. The waitress was lovely and it must have been hard to only have 2 covers for most of the evening.

A really large restaurant, you must go have a look. There are many caves within this one restaurant, it's astounding. Even having a mini golf course, amazing. This is built within what was originally a cistern for holding water. It's about 4-5 floors high. The food for dinner was not so pleasing, plain enough, lacking excitement or creativity. The subjective opinion would be that a lot of the food served was from a can. Example: Tuna, sweetcorn, meatballs, tomato sauces and more. If this was not the case, then it is that they just tasted as such.We asked for our bill, but we were not full, just wanted to leave. Two other tables it seemed did similar, all of us at the same time. The first table to leave were quiet irate when paying, remonstrating profusely with the chef.??? quello chiesto e' stato portato

We had the pleasure of eating here for our 40th anniversary based on the recommendation sought from our hotel Maison D'Ax for a typical restaurant. The restaurant is located not far from Piazza Duomo on the corner of Piazza del Sedile. An elegant restaurant with lovely ambiance with a mix of locals & tourists. Pleasant service from the staff. All of the courses were delicious & complemented by the wine recommended to meet our desire to have a regional wine. It was certainly a meal worthy of the occasion and have no hesitation in recommending it to others and would return if we ever go back to Matera. I can highly recommend the Maltagliati pasta with white ragout of lamb .

We picked this restaurant because of the excellent Tripadvisor reviews, and its proximity to the cathedral square, where we visited the recently restored cathedral. Initially, it looked like we would not get a reservation, because the restaurant website noted that reservations needed to be made 48 hours in advance. I talked to the reception people in the hotel lobby (the restaurant is connected to a hotel just on the cathedral square), and they were able to get us a reservation for four at the last minute. So happy they did!The restaurant is very nicely appointed, with a great atmosphere. Service was superb - very friendly, but very professional as well. All the dishes were very well explained, and each dish was wonderful and perfectly prepared. This was one of the best meals of our trip. Prices were reasonable in relation to the quality of the food and service. A reasonably priced wine (Nero Meta) recommended by our waiter was so well received by my tablemates, that they took a picture of the bottle and tried to locate it at local wine stores (unfortunately, unsuccessfully). After the meal, the chef, Nicola Stella, came out to our table, and spent some time with us talking about our meal, the simplicity of his ingredients, and his time cooking in other cities in Europe. The entire meal was a wonderful experience - very highly recommended.

Deserves to be Michelin starred.Food and service both excellent. Catered for 3 vegans and 1 vegetarian without a problem. Some lovely touches that Iâve never seen before such as special plates and cutlery stands.A must visit restaurant when in Matera.
