Reviews on European food in Matera, Province of Matera, Italy. Get to Matera quickly, because it’s still relatively undiscovered by foreign tourists. In town, visit the Domenico Ridola National Museum. Matera’s real claim to fame, though, and the reason it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the extensive series of cave dwellings ("i sassi") southeast of town, first inhabited by Benedictine and Basilian monks. You’ll see individual cells, chapels, and even some churches, many adorned with Byzantine decorations and frescoes.

Based on a recommendation from the 2 food trippers we came to Lounge Cafe to specifically try the gelato. The portions were extremely generous. The flavors and taste of the gelato was very good.

Steer clear of this. They are already geared up for the European City of Culture by fleecing existing customers. Dreadful service. Waited ages for bill and even when acknowledged I had to go in and take action. Matera is a honey ;pot for tourists but you can do well to avoid here and not get stung.

A totally new concept, a place to live food as a cultural experience, to savor the taste and the history of the ingredients. The chefs will welcome you with the best products of Italian tradition and the short chain of production. A truly unique dining
As Americans we are almost always the first ones to arrive. The restaurant was not yet open when we arrived. We took a walk around the neighborhood and when we got back the door was unlocked. We came in on the Chef and her husband have dinner which smells delicious. He got up immediately and seated us while she finished her dinner.Obviously a good dinner was awaiting us. We ordered, were brought the chefs offering before being served our first course. My husband was served the chef's offering which was a caponata, it included bell peppers which I have a food allergy to. I was brought a delicious serving of fresh ricotta with a crouton. We both ordered grilled lamb chops for our entrees. My husband had fresh Cod Cannoli (see photo) I had what is called Orzo in Italy is called Barley in the USA. It was cooked with tasty herbs and was prepared in an excellent way. Our entrees were prepared perfectly, the mashed potatoes were creamy and had lots of flavor. We even shared a dessert. Pasticio semifreddo. One of our favorite desserts and flavors. Our experience was very nice, the food and service excellent. The decor is modern contemporary with a flair. We would recommend making a reservation for dinner.

Last night in Matera and we were close-by, decided to google top restaurants in Matera and this popped up. It was a great find. Ordered a refined lasagne, i had a delicious carpaccio and my son had the truffle pasta. All tasty. Desserts were delicious. Friendly staff in a gourmet restaurant, you cannot go wrong here.

fish and seafood specialty dishes of the tradition of Matera at 100 mt Piazza Vittorio Veneto at 100 meters entrance stones of Matera
My colleague and I were treated to dinner at Alle Fornaci on a recent trip to Matera. The restaurant and meal we received is one of the best experiences I have had on a work trip. The food was outstanding with plenty of flavours, good portions without being too big and coupled with great service and wonderful regional wines.I would highly recommend this restaurant.

The Ristotante Regia corte, located in the Sant'angelo Luxury resort, overlooks S. Pietro caveoso square and offers a breathtaking view of the ancient district of the stones and the Murgia of Matera; inside we find the old courtyard, carved into the chara
We very much enjoyed our visit to Regina Corte, linked to the hotel where we are staying (La Casa de Lucio). The main downside is the 68 steps to climb to reach the restaurant from ground level. The service was outstanding and the food good although possibly some of the dishes were a little heavy. We had the five course tasting menu with wine matching. The enthusiasm of the staff for the food was infectious as many of the dishes were traditional to Basilicata. The restaurant has amazing outside views but we ate inside as the weather was windy.

We stopped in Dedalo for a late lunch. To our delight, it was a charming restaurant with incredible atmosphere. The menu was also a surprise, not very extensive, however, unique in their selections. As we were seated we were provided with a complimentary glass of Prosecco wine. Our orders were a great choice. Our first was a grilled vegetable parcel, followed by agnolotti stuffed with burrata, and rocket pesto and tomato fondue. Our second order was hyacinth pancakes, and pistachio crusted black pork in a light red wine sauce. Fabulous! We topped it off with a shared Espresso Tiramisu.....a great lunch. Then a stroll within the resturant into their caves with exemplary carvings.....an extra treat!

LOST IN THE SAUCEShould not have a Michelin star. Way too many ingredients and all the food smothered in cream a butter, so you canât even decider the freshness of the actual food that youâre eating. Itâs a perfect example of a chef going overboard in adding too many ingredients to a dish. The flavors did not compliment each other as well. The only one flavor that stood out is cream, and butter. Itâs a shame to smother good local produce to the point you canât appreciate the essence and flavor of the most important part of the dish, the Fish, meat, pasta, vegetable-where is it? Lost in the sauce.
