What can I say, where can I start? That is what I've said every visit when the fabulous meals have had the table groaning under their weight.Bring an appetite: servings are indeed generous - an understatement - and a beautiful expression of the food typical to the Amiata region. The produce is fresh, local where possible and makes the most of what the season has to offer (porcini mushrooms and chestnuts in October, local prosciutto and cheeses). There is also a great local wine selection (how could there not be in Southern Tuscany?) and the staff have sound knowledge in the wines themselves. The service itself is perfect; the staff are professional, friendly and warm.I've dined in the restaurant twice, both in autumn and winter, and ambience of the dining room, while spacious and light, is also cosy and I didn't feel like I had to whisper. In winter this would be the perfect place to relax for lunch after a morning of skiing (and working up an appetite to tackle those grand portions!). There is a great view of the ski run, the forest and the summit of Monte Amiata. In summer, this view is just spectacular. Such an unspoilt place! It goes without saying that I will be back.

Family, Farm Restaurant & Cooking School
If you are planning to be in Montalcino and love great food and warm hospitality, make a reservation here for the most wonderful lunch. Currently serving lunch and also hosting cooking classes. From the minute you arrive Alessandro gives you the biggest and most enthusiastic welcome. And his wife, Manuela is an amazing chef who creates delicious and beautiful dishes. Along with other family members, they run a a real farm where the majority of the ingredients are from. Six of us dined here our last day in Montalcino and if we came the first we would have returned many times. We adored everything about Locanda Dametra. Bravo to this family for creating such a special experience.

Here we have a real dichotomy for the owner, Roberto. He is a passionate restaurateur and his dining room, staff and chefs all produce some wonderful fare from mainly local ingredients. We wonder though, whether he is really as passionate about having guests to stay in his hotel? We were on a walking holiday with half board arrangements and had an excellent meal with Roberto looking after us throughout. The rooms we had been booked by the travel company had been given to others, instead we were driven 5kms down the hill to "apartments" in a sculpture park that is managed by Roberto (we understand). These apartments are large but not luxurious by any means and we were totally reliant on Roberto's staff to transport us up and down the hill for dinner and after breakfast in the park cafe, something about which they (and we) had not been briefed. So, in summary, a great restaurant in the countryside but probably not a hotel to recommend unless Roberto decides to market it as such. Even the hotel sign has gone from outside, so we assume he is concentrating on his restaurant.

The gourmet buffet presented at La Pieve, has quickly become known for its innovation, drawing those who like to broaden their gastronomic horizons beyond the local, traditional Tuscan fare. The cuisine of the La Pieve changes daily and incorporates a var
The Italian word 'Pieve' signifies a small rustic chapel and accompanying buildings. La Pieve at Poggio alle Mure near Montalcino in Southern Tuscany fits this description to a T. Tucked away alongside an unpaved road that runs through the vineyards of the Montalcinese Brunello, the settlement has a serene and sequestered air. The very stones that form the courtyard reek of history and good wine. The aromas floating through from the kitchen have a similarly intriguing appeal...La Pieve is a small hotel so it is possible to stay there and become part of the scene. Sadly, we were only able to visit for dinner - but if our experience was typical - then envy those who have the foresight to reserve a room. The dining room at La Pieve is elegant, airy and hung about with cool white drapes. However, we chose to turn our backs on this splendour to eat on the terrace - literally in amongst the vines. Our meal was served by family members who were friendly, knowledgeable and concerned that we should enjoy our meal, their hospitality and the glory of the setting. Thunder was rolling in the background but the storms stayed away and the evening mellowed in parallel with our mood. Dinner was typically Southern Tuscan but a cut above that which we experienced in other well-recommended restaurants on tour. A magnum of Nobile de Montepulciano from Poliziano (at a remarkably modest price) proved perfect accompaniment to our meal although we did regret missing out on the opportunity to try the homegrown rosato and rosso. Next time for sure. After eating we were shown inside the Pieve itself; a romanesque chapel lovingly restored and furnished with truly outstanding modern terra-cotta artwork. Long years of vineyard history and faith to send us on our way happy, full and thankful that we had decided to call by.La Pieve deserves to flourish. All right-thinking, food-loving, vineyard-stepping historians should make a detour to enjoy the hospitality and the remarkable setting. We were surprised that signage proved to be low key and inconspicuous. Maybe the owners have decided that hordes of diners would diminish the 'specialness' of this unique nook. Do yourselves a favour, pay a visit and drink deep of serenity and graciousness that surrounds La Pieve.

When you are greeted at the door like you are entering someone's home, you know you are in for something special. Massimo introduces himself and shakes your hand really making you feel welcome. The food was just as good as the hospitality. We enjoyed the pici al ragu and fettuccine al pesto, both really fantastic. It is a bit difficult to find so leave yourself a few minutes and wander this quiet but adorable Italian town and take in the views.
