We had reserved a late hour, the place is wonderful, secretive, amidst a pine forest in a cul-de-sac... the house is nicely decorated. The food was not bad and prices in the upper-mid range...67 for two adults and two children with a salad a main course each and a bottle of cava.It took them 1 (one) hour to serve us very simple dishes...the kids were starving...

Probably one of the best paellas I have eaten in the region while staying at L'Escala and as part of a total lunch for less than 30 euros. For sure we will return to this place to try more of their specialties.

Es Portal Boutique Hotelâs gourmet restaurant specializes in rice varieties cultivated in Pals, Costa Brava fresh fish and local meats. Updated Emporda cuisine based on outstanding product offered by our chef Joan Carles Sanchez is paired with a Emporda w
Staying at the Es Portal hotel we had two evening meals at the restaurant. We had high expectations, gastronomique restaurant in Catalonia. While the food was good, certainly nothing spectacular. On our first night my slow cooked veal cheek was hard and cold, they clearly had not warmed it up correctly - really awful and poor quality control. The chef never appeared to be in the kitchen? Other dishes over the two nights were OK, fish good but skin not crispy, rice dish nice, and generally over use of salt and over use of foam and emulsions (clearly they enjoy using their three thermomix machines). good wine list although much pricier than other establishments we have visited. We appreciate your comments Fitzroytraveller about your experience at Es Portal Hotel Gastronòmic. We're glad to read you enjoyed the food but we're also worried about some other comments. If you need a lowest level of salt on your meal you can refer it to your waiter so we can cook your meal accordingly. And if a dish is not properly cooked (and it should be) you need to contact your waiter so we can fix the problem right away. The veal cheek should be well cooked and we apologize if it wasn't. We'll dispute your claim about over use of foam and emulsions. Ours, is an updated traditional catalan cuisine, not avantgarde cuisine, and the foundation of our gastronomy is product. We can use foam and emulsion sometimes, this is true, but surely not 'over use'. And finaly, the price of all our services, foods and wines is settled regarding de quality, the serving and other considerations other than the price so you can enjoy it accordingly with our standards. We want to thank you for your visit and for your rating.

Fresh, simple cuisine, using local ingredients. Products are respected by our chef, and the dishes require no explanation.
This restaurant has a wonderful courtyard setting just at the bottom of the Aiguafreda car park. It has a very relaxed feel. As you would expect, there is a lot of fish/seafood although one of the party ate a very tender and beautifully cooked steak. We ate rascassa fish which was soft and juicy although the fish is perhaps not particularly flavourful in itself so might have benefitted from more seasoning. The wine is very reasonably priced, service quick, helpful and friendly. The owner, Oscar, speaks flawless English. All in all a really lovely dining experience - would definitely go back. Hi, SharonSamantha,Thank you for your review on our place. Some people might agree with you as for the seasoning, but we try to deliver fish as it is so that if offers all it has, without any additional sauces.Kindest regards,Oscar

We were introduced to this restaurant by English friends. It seemed that this was the building where the original casino was. Very cosy atmosphere and very friendly and efficient staff. Their lunch formula costs only ⬠16 per person and includes a very good three course menu including wine, water and coffee. We enjoyed it very much especially the lubina. We will be back when in the area!

Located in a small town of Pals, but with this quality wouldn't be out of place anywhere. We had lunch menu and it was delicious and very carefully presented, starting from 9 plump olives stuffed with anchovis served in a neat grid on a white plate. The lunch menu was a selection of small dishes, and all of them were delicious - the brioche with sobrassada, mmm... The wines were very good as well (we asked for a white and it was great, mineral and full-bodied, served in just the right temperature for this warm day). We asked for a quick service as we were in a hurry, and they orchestrated the whole meal so perfectly that we were able to leave exactly on time. Altogether, a great experience and to me this place deserves a star (you know which one!), considering the combination of service, food, wines and comfortable setting.

Entirely concur with the many Tripadvisor plaudits about the quality of food at this tiny and always packed location. Accept seats at the bar if they canât reserve you a table. Just take care with your ordering. The menu recommends three plates and one dessert per person; a shared portion of jamon iberico and three or four plates between a couple might be a safer way to start, and then order more as and when you need it. Everything prepared fresh, pretty much in front of your eyes. Strongly recommended.

Found this restaurant in passing. Actually in El Griells just at the end of L'Estarit beach. Nice cosy atmosphere and excellent service. On the first occasion ate rice ( Marc who provided very good service) said we must call it rice and not paella!. The second time had sea bass which was of good quality. Drinks and food very reasonable and would not hesitate to return. Recommended.

We visited this restaurant based on its good reviews and high rating in Trip Advisor. It was so good we returned a second time a week later with other friends and after two visits it is now the most recent addition to our bucket list for the region. The interior of the restaurant is housed in the hayloft of the masia which has been in the family for six generations (the seventh being the children of the current owners). The hayloft has been renovated and takes center stage during the off season, but since we visited in August it is empty in the evenings and the action moves to a delightful paved terraza and adjoining lawn where the tables are set. We were seated a a table on the terraza but there were some tables placed on the lawn - we were told we could request this when booking. Given the proximity of the rice fields around Pals, there are some insects in summer. The staff place mosquito coils close to the lights on the terraza but we found it necessary to ask for extra coils to be placed around the table, which did the trick perfectly making me wonder why the staff werenât more pro-active in offering to do this straight away. Having said that, the level of the attention otherwise from the front of house staff was excellent. The menu is well balanced with a variety of plates based on products typical of the region. The option of ordering entrees as media ración or full-ración is welcome as it allows smaller groups to still order a variety of entrees without over-ordering. There is a noticeable additional level of complexity to the plates through the addition of savours and textures to compliment or highlight the base product. These additions can hide a cheaper quality base product or bring little benefit (or even confusion) to the dish - but none of that here. The entree par excellence was the slow-boiled egg mixed with braised potato, foie gras and mushroom potato, recreated in the shape of a poached egg. The main course to recommend based on our experience would be the monkfish with black trumpet mushrooms and black romesco sauce - though Iâm still intrigued by the black in the romesco sauce (I forgot to ask!) . Even the simplest of plates seemed to be successfully improved by unusual touches. The most obvious example was the recruit from Nuria in Ullastret. This is a dish which is served perfectly well as it comes from the farm with the simple addition of a local honey or confiture, but the dish served here seemed to have an additional creaminess to it with a slightly firmer core, with pistachio, basil and lime introduced as additional flavours. Success!Jordi (the chef) and his wife (in charge of the front of house) did the circuit of the tables at the end of the night to talk to the guests, with genuine interest in what we thought and eager to talk about the property, the business and the area. The restaurant is relatively new to the region but clearly offers a lot of potential. We liked it and itâs on our bucket list to return!
