If you need a summer holiday in a place surrounded by the unspoilt nature of eastern Dolomites , away from crowded and chaotic places such as Passo Rolle or Rosetta, visit Alpe Tognola. The most convenient way : to get Frattazza- Alpe Tognola cableway from San Martino di Castrozza. In winter it is much-frequented ski resort , in summer especially bikers.Just a short step from Alpe Tognola, you will find the "terrazza sulle Dolomiti": a panoramic view from where you could cherish a wonderful surrounding landscape with the Pale di San Martino and the wild peaks of the Lagorai chain, and Big War combat zone. Within half an hour you descend to the beautiful valley where are two buildings - the old Malga Tognola di Siror (including cowshed), offering traditional black felt highlander´s hats, and newer cottage Malghetta Tognola, with a pleasant terrace. While summer is this magical place an oasis of calm , in the winter here is very busy due to the numerous ski slopes and lifts. There is also a lower station of the chairlift to Mount Tognola, but it works only in winter. It was enough time to discuss with logger on the summer attractions of this beautiful place, about the upcoming modernization (extension of the reservoir and upgrading of the snowmaking systém,the replacement of the chairlift Tognola Peak). He even told us about the old legend of the shepherd named Siror, who fell in love with a mysterious girl from the valley. We tasted exquisite local specialties such homemade speck,â La tosèlaâ and wine. The tosèla , a fresh curd, that is found only in Primiero, is made with milk straight from the cow, so that remains intact all the fragrance of the herbs of the high-altitude pastures. From Malga you can go two footpaths to the summit Tognola or upgraded trail no 352, which descends from Alpe Tognola in Vanoi Valley through the meadows Scandola and Masi di Tognola to Caoria.Talking with nice logger were finished by glass of wine and we went to San Martin. On his recommendation over Malga Valcigolera. The path that connects the two pastures is in the woods, on a fabulous grassy and mossy, certainly it maintained and run by a laborisa population of gnomes and elves.

We were lucky enough to find this great family restaurant on our first evening and return most evenings during our weeks stay in San Martino. It had a great choice of food, the pasta was gorgeous and the pizza delicious. The staff were so friendly and welcoming which is just as important as the great food. Our favourite waitress was Marcia:) Would highly recommend for couples, kids and large parties. We were up to 13 people some nights and they always welcomed us. I would book ahead at the weekend as it's is very, very busy with locals. Many thanks from the uk gang & Bellissimo Pete!

I visited this restaurant several times in the past and always admired the beauty of the location, the tasteful architecture and the solid food. Last night I returned with my friends and had a great culinary experience worthy of a review.I started with a velvety pasta e fagioli and ended with braised veal cheek. Both prepared and presented in a way that suggests the possibility of a Michelin star. My dinner companions were equally impressed with their choices. The service, which had been disorganised in past, is greatly improved, professional and friendly.Highly recommended.

excellent restaurant located at the top of the Colverde ski slope where you could try lots of local dishes with a good quality-price ratio; I suggest to dine on Tuesday,Thursday or Saturday night to experience the night skiing ;-)

This is a large number operation but both kitchen and front of house work with tremendous efficiency, so that they avoid the chaos that unfortunately often marks this type of "tourist spot" place. The front of house is also pleasant as well as efficient. And the kitchen staff shows some basic competence: a pasta, some vegetables, and beef were cooked with precision. Unfortunately, the (fresh) pasta had not been well separated before cooking, so that it came with large lumps glued together; and the porcini mushrooms in it, while in generous amount, were bland. All in all, food was average. Prices are above average for the quality, but you pay for the the wonderful setting, in front of the Pale di San Martino (pity for the horrendous cableway that mars the nature landscape). The inside rooms are also nice.

Mainly underground hotel-attached restaurant that reminds me of pre-1989 Eastern Europe: terrible decor, lots of staff, awfully low food quality. Just had one meal there which was overwhelmingly awful (sitting at a table of six friends - we all agreed). Carefully read the other tripadvisor reviews to understand what's going on. And ignore the management responses to bad reviews. It's a bad restaurant, a really bad restaurant in a really bad hotel. Believe me!Dear Customer, thank you for your review. Unfortunately we have to communicate to our readers that you've never eaten at the restaurant, and this review is bogus. Thanks to all our readersGianluca

We really enjoyed our dinner at Malga Fratazza. It was a great fun to go by snowmobile. We were then nicely surprised by the very small and welcoming place. The food and service were indeed good, with the the nice touch of the waitresses dressed with traditional clothes. And then to end the nice evening, after a very balanced bill, an amazing ride down the hill ....by sleights!!

Looking for a few bottles of wine for Valentine day I asked some locals to recommend a wine shop and was sent to Renzo's. Little did I know about the experience that was awaiting. The wine cellar, located in the basement is a real hidden gem, with lots of beautiful bottles and a huge choice as far as prices are concerned.Do not leave San Martino di Castrozza without paying a visit to Renzo and ask for his help when choosing your bottles: you' won't be disappointed!Grazie mille....Siamo felici di aver potuto accontentarvi e consigliarvi nella scelta di ottimi vini.....
