Powys Hotels | Places to Stay in Powys

Wales' spectacular scenic rural heartland, and the site of Brecon Beacons National Park, Powys is a lush land of verdant mountain valleys, craggy caves and quirky towns. The staunchly nationalistic area offers appealing outdoors opportunities. Canter on horseback through the rugged Brecon Beacons mountain range. Walk or cycle the charming valleys. Other draws are commanding Powis Castle near Welshpool and the Centre for Alternative Technology, a sustainable development center, near Machynlleth.

What a nice place!

Beautiful old Tudor style property great olde world character, inside and out. Enjoyed a good quality two course meal in the restaurant and a few cold beers in the bar. The room was spacious and comfortable, the en-suite a tad outdated. All of the staff we engaged with, were polite, helpful and very professional. On a warmer evening, sitting outside in the picturesque gardens would be a nice bonus. Almost forgot………breakfast was very good. Pricing was very reasonable, we will definitely return when visiting Wales.

This is the place if you want isolation !

Firstly let me say most of the staff at this hotel are wonderful, polite and helpful. And please remember if you don’t tell them you have an issue they can’t do anything about it! We had an issue with the size of room as we were for there for five nights and we had very little storage for our luggage. Our room was changed quickly with no fuss and the staff were apologetic, the next room was absolutely lovely. The hotel itself is a little ‘eccentric’. It has no bar, it just has a sitting room and large reception area, The furniture and setting is eclectic, perhaps befitting with building age, but not necessarily to everyone’s taste. But I must say the whole hotel was lovely and clean. But please beware if you are a vegetarian/ vegan and you want to eat in the hotel every night, it is going to be a struggle.

Part of a coach tour

Reviewed By David B

The hotel is very well sited and well appointed and well looked after. We were part of a tour and all was well. We had a lovely room with masses of space. The only criticisms I had were that the shower was on the ceiling and so when you turned it on you immediately had a cold shower from on high. The bathroom light was on a sensor and stayed on long after you were back in bed. The breakfast was acceptable. Usual beef about the toast which you did yourself! Once slightly dried and if you put it through twice it was too brown! The staff were all amazingly good

Celebrating our 24th Wedding Anniversary was topped off with a perfect meal at The Royal Oak Hotel. The decor was relaxing, and the service was polite and warm. The food was exceptional. We only had a starter and main, but both dishes were presented beautifully. Added to this was the cleanliness of the restaurant. The tables, chairs, and floor were really clean. Unlike some well known pub chains that have sticky tables and carpet. You can tell that the Hotel Manager and his staff take much pride in their work and guests. We would recommend this Hotel to all, and we plan to stay next time to enjoy the warm service even more, while enjoying what Welshpool has to offer.

A wonderful afternoon spend at The Swan

Reviewed By jenny s

We had a brilliant lunch here at the Swan after attending a talk at the Hay Festival. The food was perfectly cooked, I had steak pie and vegetables, no separate pie dish, with startilingly good pastry and hot gravy, and perfectly cooked tenderstem broccoli and new potatoes (freshly boiled, not microwaved). In a classic dining room, plush and comfortable, with huge windows, framed by a beautifully flowering yellow shrub. We then spend the afternoon relaxing in the garden with friends, having ice cream and tea! Of course the weather helped, but the service was immaculate and we felt treated as honoured guests for the whole time we were there. Booking the table took an email but I was delighted to receive a personal email and friendly response by the manager, Adrian Wilson, who couldn't have been more helpful.

5 star Hotel with 4 star service

Reviewed By MLP

This hotel is almost perfect, but as you know, I've stayed at hotels which are perfect. On the plus side, the location is amazing, the history and quality of the hall is truly exceptional. You do feel like a VIP staying at this hotel. There are some lovely antiques and original oil paintings on the walls. The food is very good, but the choice is limited, which is not a problem when it is excellently served. The reason for the limited menu is down to the small, but hard working staff. There just seemed to be too few staff. We had to seek them out. On check in our room was not what we had confirmed, and the staff seemed to struggle to deal with this anomaly. It's a shame as the place is truly a hidden gem. We will return, and the best qualities of this place, like the half sized snooker table, the informality of the service (when available) and the grand opulence of the furnishings were more than enough to offset the slightly inadequate staffing!

All right if you’re white!

Reviewed By iggy2k0

Let me start with my gripe! At breakfast, the morning after our stay a lady called Tina (perhaps the owner) came into the room to engage with the guests. There were three tables of guests including my table. Tina with great warmth engaged with table one. Have a good five minute conversation with them and being very engaging. She then moved to table two, again showing great warmth and attention to her guests. Following her conversation with table two, she turned, looked at our table and walked out of the room!! Not even a basic ‘good morning’. Perhaps Tina assumed that because we were brown we could not speak English!! Even my teenage son commented “she ignored the brown table!” With regards to our accommodation it was great. We had room one. A nicely presented room and a spotlessly clean bathroom. The one issue we had was the heating was on full blast and we were unable to turn it down or off from the radiator no matter which way we turned the control on the radiator. This made the room uncomfortably hot but luckily we found a fan in the cupboard so put this on to counter the heat and it made the temperature more bearable when sleeping. The car park was fun to get into. Like a crystal maze challenge but simple when following the precise instructions given. Overall a fantastic room and great breakfast. The only blip was the blatant ignorance/racism shown by Tina. Maybe Tina could educate herself.

Stayed here with our two young grandchildren for two nights . We had been there the previous October with adult friends and had a lovely time, nevertheless we did wonder how we would get on with children. We need not have worried . Staff were very pleasant and catered for the children's needs at meal times with a smile - despite the fact we had fussy eaters . We were seated discretely with plenty of space. The children were fascinated by the history of the place . They loved the creaky floors and all the historic features . As for ourselves, we enjoyed the delicious meals and friendly atmosphere so we are looking forward to our next return visit in the Autumn.
