This Hampton Inn is recently built and it shows. Classier lobby and hallways than most Hampton Inns. Our room was large - both the bed area and bathroom had plenty of space. Staff was extremely friendly. Breakfast was the usual marginal Hampton Inn breakfast, but there is a take out cafe next door that is helpful, and you can get fresh popovers a few blocks away. Parking is expensive.

To begin with, the parking lot has one working street light. The parking spaces are not big enough for a pick up, which is important to know when you travel for work like we do. Second, the double bed room we had was on the bottom floor, it has a huge sliding glass door with a tiny lock on it. Again no building lights, anybody could walk up to the glass and get in. The room is way smaller then shown in photos. The coffee maker was in the bathroom. And if you are a decent to larger size person make sure you walk in ready to sit on the toilet because the bathroom is so small there’s no space to turn around. The shower head leaks so most of the water falls directly down instead of coming out where you can reach it. I’m just beyond frustrated we spent 315$ plus tax coming to a total of $346 on a hotel that was not worth $100. If you are a young woman or traveling alone this is not a good place to stay and feel safe. Oh and the toilet seat still had marks on it looking like it hadn’t been cleaned.

Lobby and room were clean. Staff was helpful! Used valet parking and at the end of the stay, my car was covered with bird poop, and I mean covered! Your car is not safe and secure at this location. Contacted the Hilton three days ago, with pictures, no response. They will probably respond to this since I posted it publicly to make it look like they care, but they don't!

There are two Residence Inn's in Portsmouth, this one is downtown - - perfect location - - don't get them confused (the other Residence Inn is at the former Pease Air Force Base). The Residence Inn Portsmouth Downtown/Waterfront is ideally located, for everything; walking in downtown Portsmouth, outdoor exercise, shopping, restaurants, culture, easy access to Maine, UNH, and the NH/ME seacoast and beaches. The Residence Inn Portsmouth Downtown/Waterfront is spotless, our room was immaculate. The common areas of the hotel, and our room were well maintained. Our room was comfortable and functional. I was looking for an alarm clock in the bedroom, and then I remembered that Marriott nickel and dimed their brand standard and guest experience and removed their $10.00 alarm clock from their guest rooms. I'll defer making further comments about the decay of Marriott's "guest experience," and save my energy to address Residence Inn's/Marriott's Limited-Service brands "new breakfast." We had little to no contact with the staff, other than to check in and out, which was non-descript. Parking is located on premise at $38.00 per day. There is metered parking around the hotel, but, I believe there is a maximum time period that you can stay at a meter, the meters are in effect from 9 AM to 8 PM, Monday to Saturday, and, I think, 12 Noon to 8 PM on Sunday; the meters in the area of the hotel, are, I think $2.00/hour, for the first 3 hours, then the meters bump up to $5.00/hour, thereafter. I think the Elected Officials in Portsmouth government, think Portsmouth is Rodeo Drive, Worth Avenue, Fifth Avenue, or Newbury Street (based on their municipal parking rates). As for breakfast, each Residence Inn hotel's hands are tied by Marriott International, and the hotel is making the best of Marriott's new "Residence Inn breakfast" brand standards. I wonder if the person at Marriott's Corporate Headquarters who conceived this "new, Residence Inn breakfast" is on a Day Pass from a psychiatric hospital, and delusional? The new Residence Inn breakfast, in my opinion, is disgusting; there is an abundance of heavily processed, chemical-rich food, that is commercially wrapped in plastic, along the lines of what you'd find at a Truck Stop vending machine. Cooked oatmeal is gone, replaced by instant. Scrambled eggs are gone, replaced by prefabricated, commercially prepared breakfast sandwiches, or, guess what, commercially wrapped, hard boiled eggs, the waffle iron is gone, the muffins are the type that if you lay one on the hood of your car, the paint might peel away. You can't blame the hotel for this breakfast, ALTHOUGH, Marriott International was under tremendous pressure from Residence Inn hotel owners to lower their costs associated with breakfast. So, Marriott created a breakfast that requires only one staff person (less staff, less cost to the hotel), and that is abundant in packaged, heavily processed, chemical laden food. The shame of Marriott's new breakfast is that there was a time when Marriott International had a renowned food and beverage/culinary leadership team, who were preeminent in their catering of business meetings and social events. These people really knew food and beverage, and hospitality. I don't know where they were when this knew breakfast was conceived, but, I wish those Food and Beverage leaders conceived the new Residence Inn breakfast, and not someone who may be on a Day Pass from a psychiatric hospital. So, here's my take, I give The Residence Inn Portsmouth Downtown/Waterfront FIVE Trip Advisor stars. We would not hesitate to return to The Residence Inn Portsmouth Downtown/Waterfront; we look forward to doing so. The hotel-provided breakfast, in my opinion, is a disgrace, I'd say, make believe that the hotel’s breakfast does not exist.

Was in New Hampshire for work. Two night stay was pleasant. Room was clean. Very quiet. Robin at the front desk was helpful and very personable. Will be back when in the area. Was nice to see a HoJo again.

Clean, comfortable room. My issue is with the lack of even a complimentary cup of coffee or tea outside of the tiny percolator in the room. We never use the in room percolator due to lack of the ability to tell if it’s ever been cleaned. We just stayed at a Fairfield in Syracuse NY which provided a simple breakfast and coffee and tea 24 hours in the lobby. So we’re paying more for less. The Fairfield was just as nice and clean. This property has decided to have a Starbucks. So no complimentary coffee or tea nor as much as a cup of yogurt. I hope this is not a trend for all Marriott properties but just this property’s management. Check carefully when picking a hotel if you’re interested in getting a bit more for your travel dollars.
