We were visiting Ercolano and staying in the Villa Batista, which is owned by the owners of this restaurant too.
We went early as we arrived on Saturday thinking we might need to book. And we did. We had to book and come back an hour later. So we asked if we could get a drink first but was pointed across the road. So we went there.
Returned at our now booked in time, and the lovely waitress read us the entire menu, translating as she went. Brilliant service, and good food followed. Some food came better than others, but that was more a taste thing rather than a quality thing.
Overall very good meal, and very friendly service.

We chose this on the basis of online reviews, and it fully justified our choice. The staff were a little surprised to see us: this is not a tourist restaurant, we were the only non-Italians there, and they only have the menu in Italian.
But they were very hospitable, and the menu was mouthwatering. It was slightly daunting as it was clearly structured for you to have a four-course meal, but they didn't bat an eyelid whn my wife ordered a starter and a secondi, and I ordered a primi and a secondi. And they were all excellent: the meat was melt-in-your-mouth delicious, and everything else lived up to that standard. The wine-list was one of the most extensive I have seen, with wines ranging from 14 - 300 euros a bottle. We went in at the modest end, and had a bottle of local Gragano (a red wine from Sorrento) which was delicious too. We were right only to have gone for two courses, too: we were completely full by the end, and able only to enjoy a couple of excellent coffees before we left. Lovely food, and friendly, helpful (if surprised) staff made this a very enjoyable evening out.

We stopped here for a late lunch on the way back from a visit to Vesuvius. Despite arriving after two p.m. (Restaurant closes at three p.m.) we were quickly seated. An excellent choice of different pizzas, at prices less than half I have seen elsewhere.
Our pizzas arrived within less than ten minutes of ordering; light thin-crust base and excellent flavour.
The restaurant interior is clean, modern and well-lit.
Recommended!!

Da Giuseppe al Granatello

Reviewed By Slane_toronto - Toronto, Canada

My two canadian friends and I are backpacking and staying at the Fabric hostel in Portici. Looking for a restaurant, this was the highest ranked on trip advisor. All the reviews were in Italian but the ratings were great so we took a chance. I'm so glad we did!
We wound around the port streets and the amazing owner, Pepe ( short for Giuseppe as he explained) quickly made room for us. Almost immediately, the food started coming at us. We didn't order anything but e food came from the kitchen family-style and everyone was amazing.
We got appetizer plates:
- caprese salad
- eggplant lasagne
- roasted veggies
-bean stew (unreal!)
Then we got some seafood:
-clams in white wine
-grilled baby octopus
Then we each got a main dish of mussel pasta. One of us is gluten intolerant and Pepe easily accommodated this, bringing fresh fried whole fish ( at least ten small assorted fish) instead of pasta. The menu apparently changes daily depending on what's fresh at the market that morning.
We finished two bottles of wine over the course of dinner and as we sipped our grappa/limoncello after the food, we discussed what we thought the bill would be. We decided that easily €50/ person was reasonable. We were absolutely shocked when the total was €70 in TOTAL. That is for 3 people to get stuffed and drink 2 bottles of wine, one bottle of water and 3 post-dinner liqueurs.
We were so absolutely impressed that we made Reservations for Friday, when apparently they serve dessert.
If you are staying in or around Naples, this little place is worth the quick €1.60 train to Portici. This is the experience we were looking for in Italy completely. The table of Italian men next to us were celebrating something and even gave us some of their proseco. We felt like part of the town, had the best meal ever and it was SO reasonably priced. There are great bars/clubs nearby on the Portici pier. We're making a night of it all on Friday.

walked to the harbor to see the sunset. First time here an had no idea where to eat. Most of the eateries on the harbor were full of 20 somethings...we're cool 60 somethings so not too interested in the noise or trying to impress ;-) just wanted a local place to enjoy a glass of wine, beer and good local food. I think we found it. Mostly a take out which was packed with people ordering calamari served in paper cones. But they have a small dining room and as English speakers we were sort of a novelty. Hardly knew what we were ordering, but it was fresh...and I love calamari, so...
First the artisnol bread in a wood basket, wine and beer. Next course was my nice fresh salad with those yummy Italian olives. Next came the fried calamari and spaghetti w/shell fish. Pretty dang good for the price and quantity. I really felt we were eating with the locals...all patrons knew we were foreigners - amazing how you can always tell.
TV in the background had the Pope celebrating Easter...I tried to engage with the (I'm assuming restaurant owners) we had seen the Pope at the Vatican the day before! We all tried to communicate with big smiles sufficing when language failed.
We found we could always find someone who speaks some English (thank goodness) which is so helpful and usually fun and funny.
If you want local color, good decent meal, take a chance on this little gem and take a pass on the flashy competition on the harbor.

'Scue' scue' spaghetto (fast fresh tomato sauce) not so outstanding, what at the contrary is the 'friittata di maccheroni'. At a very, very good rate.

Il re dei panini da oltre 20 anni, credo sia stato il primo nel suo genere.
Patate sempre fresche, ampissima scelta di contorni.
Non proprio economico, però vale la pena mangiare un suo panino almeno una volta.
