Reviewed By Silvano1971Excellent hotel within the old city of Pingyao. Beautiful historical old building, but with all amenities. The hotel is just five minutes away from the main street of Pingyao. Very friendly staff...when we checked in they realized it was our son’s birthday so they organized a free dumpling class for us, got him a nice birthday cake and also gave him a gift. It was really wonderful of them. Another thing to mention was their restaurant. The local food was delicious and we ended having dinner there in both nights we were in Pingyao. We really fully recommend this hotel.

Very friendly and nice Hotel in the old town of Pingyao
Reviewed By neidiWe stayed in the Water Hotel in Pingyao for 3 nights in the Deluxe Suite. The Hotel is located very conviniently near the south gate in the ancient town. The room was very clean and quit. All in all a comfortable place. Even thou the staff doesn't speak english, they are very friendly and helpful. We've got a free transfer from and to the railway station, which was very convinient. The breakfast was ok, the coffee was very good. We only can recommend this Hotel.

Reviewed By Pic152Nice location in the centre of the Ancient City, attractive courtyard area, friendly owner. Very cheap beer from a fridge in reception. Good value budget hotel. Basic but decent Asian breakfast. Budget Kangaroo room was a little small but adequate and the Kang bed was surprisingly comfortable. The drainage was a little off in the wet room/toilet but given the price it was still good value for money. Good for travellers on a budget, wanting more than a hostel.

The location is central, the hosts friendly, and they are used to international guests. This hotel has been popular with French diplomats, and a former President even stayed here. The lobby/restaurant hasn't changed much over the years and the walls are covered with cards from appreciative guests and photos of famous guests. When staying in Pingyao, a good courtyard hotel is a key part of the experience, and this hotel fits the bill. The courtyards are charming, and many rooms have traditional kang-style beds, but with soft mattresses, something which is hard to find in Pingyao. The restaurant also serves good local food, and normally also has real coffee and Western breakfast, but this service had been suspended as there are few international guests in 2020. Note that there are tiny rooms, somewhat larger rooms, and even a few rooms with lofts. The tiny rooms have space for little more than the kang/bed and there is no separate shower stall, like in an RV, so be warned! Not having a shower stall is common in Pingyao, but the larger rooms have bathrooms large enough that everything doesn't get wet when you shower. The rooms have good water pressure. AC/heating units, good lighting. Not many outlets or place to put luggage though. Dejuyuan is a good choice to get a feel for living in an old courtyard home without breaking the bank or your back (on a hard bed).

A little oasis

Marvel at the narrow streets and fabulous historic architecture as the taxi weaves its way to the hotel. As soon as you walk through the gateway you know it is going to be good. An English speaking host, sympathetically restored architecture, courtyard after courtyard flowers, greenery, water features, moon gates this place has it all. Even in dusty Shanxi there is a place to rest. The rooms are lovely, clean and all face the courtyards. I will mention that housekeeping was minimal ( nobody made the beds) but didn't detract in any way. Breakfast, although extra was nice as was the other food. If you stay out late you need to bang on the gate to be let in, but it just seems to add to the fun.

Animal abuse - they keep a cat and a dog in small cages!
Reviewed By sophieontheroadI spent two nights at this place and the first thing I noticed when I arrived was a small cage inside the courtyard with a cat meowing like crazy. I instantly felt sorry but hoped that this was only temporary and they would let it out later. I checked again later that day and the cat was still in the cage with nothing but two bowls, one was full of water and the other one full of feces. The poor cat didn’t have any room to move and was forced to sit on the metal bars of the cage, there wasn’t even something to sit or lie on! The next morning, the same situation and for the whole time I was there, this cat was held in the cage without once being let out. The staff didn’t seem to care. There is also a small dog kept in a cage in the back part of the courtyard. It is sometimes allowed to run around but spends most of its time also in a little cage. No one at this hostel seems to care about these animals. It made me and my boyfriend so sad to see these pets being so neglected, so whenever we could, we opened their cages and let them out and played with them for a little while. We also collected some cardboard and put it in the cages so that they had at least something to sit on. I then spoke to the staff about it and they were laughing about my concerns. They told me that the cat can never leave the cage as it would run inside the restaurant and disturb the guests. I told them that this is animal abuse and that other guests from my parts of the world will be way more disturbed by that than by a cat walking inside a restaurant. They told me that I was the first person to ever mention that and that there’s nothing they can do about it. I can’t believe that I was the first person to bring this up!! But I hope I won’t be the last. Avoid this place if you have a heart for animals. If you’re still staying there, please let these poor animals out of their cages once in a while.

A particular experience since breakfast and optional other meals are served on the inner court. Rooms are old, we had classic beds with acceptable comfort. Bathroom was small and wet. Good airco, Wifi was also ok.

Reviewed By hlai7233The cheapest stay in my entire trip to northern China at RMB35/6-bed dorm. Staff were extremely helpful. Shower/toilet facilities are below par especially shower water was just lukewarm. They run a restaurant in the small lounge area which end up having to ask lounging staying guests to move along - not nice.

Value for money
Reviewed By CapeTraveller111The deluxe king room was spacious, characterful & good value for money. The bed was huge & comfortable (although the pillow not so much). The honour system fridge with water, Coke & beer is a nice touch. The bathroom isn’t spacious or modern, but it’s clean. The owner spoke enough English to get by. Minor cons: The owner was not there when we arrived so we had to wait in our room for 30min until he arrived before we could check in & get a room key. Had cheaper laundry service elsewhere. The owner emailed beforehand to offer a taxi from the bullet train station (¥30; 30 min) which I recommend as it’s good value and might be quite difficult to find the place otherwise. The location on the map is more or less correct, but even the official town map that the owner gave us on arrival didn’t seem to be completely accurate. It’s in a very quiet corner of the old town (quite dark at night), but did not feel unsafe. Could be more central, but then the old town is pretty small so not too much of an issue.
