I've recently rented a place in Verbania and so am on the prowl for good places to eat and this is definitely one of my "finds" in this bustling, friendly little town on Lago Maggiore. You always know you're likely to be eating well when you walk into a restaurant and the tables are littered with locals .... and at lunchtime the other day this placed was packed. What attracted me initially was the prospect of an archtypical "Italian" menu for â¬10 ... good value by any standards, but if I'm honest I wasn't expecting anything that good for the money.Well, I was wrong. Firstly if it hadn't been pelting with rain I could have eaten outside in a lovely little courtyard garden which in the evening must be rather romantic. But inside was fine with the tables nicely set out and laid with tablecloths.Service was quick and very friendly. I chose a starter of pasta with fresh pesto. The smell of the fresh basil that hit me was wonderful as a huge plate was put under my nose. For mains I chose braised beef. A favourite of mine and if done well, an excellent way of serving a cheaper cut of beef. I was delivered three generous slices in a light gravy which were absolutely delicious. Soft and moist (meaning they've been simmering away in bouquet garnis for ages!) and very tasty. I could have had vegetables and potatoes with the dish ... I opted for a green salad. This is all home cooking as it ought'a!I passed on a pud (this was lunch after all!) but the coffee was good and strong. So this place is definitely worth a visit. Go up the main shopping street (via San Vittore), past the church on your left and continue up the narrow lane infront of you. The Taverna del Mago is on your right hand side.

Excellent warm atmosphere and good quality food. Good service provided by both the staff and the owner who is totally involved in what goes on in the restaurant and the kitchen. Definitely one of the best in the area, for those who are willing to pay a little more than the equivalent of the average pizza place!

Be prepared for an amazing meal! It is primarily fish, but there is also some very unusual choices..the scallops and foie gras was exceptional! Everything was cooked to perfection and the chef brought out some wonderful appetizers. It is located in the square of Verbania and not the quietest of locations but well worth the visit. Excellent wine list ! Make a reservation. We were lucky enough to have a fire works show while we were dining!

A lovely family run restaurant tucked away in the back streets of Pallanza. There's certainly no view of the lake but this is made up for by the homely nature of the restaurant. Good choice of well cooked food. I had the minestrone soup followed by sea bass with vegetables, both cooked to perfection. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her spaghetti with clams and shrimps. The panna cotta was up to Master Chef (UK TV programme) standards. Very good choice of reasonably priced wine.A nice touch was the husband and wife owners coming to have a chat with us at the end of the meal. Not fine dining, but a really good meal enjoyed by us both.Very reasonably pricedWould happily return.

Very friendly, even though we arrived an hour before closing. No fresh fish (we were late) but my wife had a delicious four fish entree. All cooked to perfection. The Chianti was excellent. My duck was a very small portion and dry. The raspberry sauce it was to be cooked in (or so I thought) was in a little cup, not sufficient for the five slices of duck breast I got. (I have to admit - I am generally disappointed in duck entrees, but I am still hoping to find a restaurant that does it well). The couscous side dish was boring. The desert (cheesecake in a glass) was wonderful. 66 euro for 2. So, go!But order fish. good morning, thank you for your review.I am sorry for your comment about the duck, if you had mentioned it we would have done the remake of the dish, as regards the size of the portion being a second dish (not a main dish) are about 200 grams. In reference to fresh fish, I would like to point out that we didn't have fresh LAKE FISH that evening but the rest of the fish on the menu is all fresh (except for a few dishes).I hope to see you soon and make you think again about our meat.

We had a very enjoyable meal here, despite the storm that brewed up, we sat outside on the veranda which is really nice. The food was great, everything we had was top quality. I especially liked my fish ragout with spaghetti. The service is extremely efficient and friendly too.

We went for a wedding at lunch. Beautiful sorroundings with the pristine waters of the lake and a little village view. The food was very good. Appetizers with a good choice of cheese and ham delicacies and fried vegetables. Risotto done in an enourmous pan was delicious and the fassona meat incredible. Also the millefoglie dessert with raspberries was excellent. Great food in a wonderful secluded location.

Fantastic food here with a very talented chef. Well worth a visit both for dinner and very reasonable lunchtime menu. They have lovely outside area but we preferred the tables inside as the interior is really well done.
