Phitsanulok (Thai: พิษณุโลก, pronounced [pʰít.sā.nú.lôːk], also locally known as Pilok) is an important, historic city in lower northern Thailand and is the capital of Phitsanulok Province, which stretches all the way to the Laotian border. Phitsanulok is one of the oldest cities in Thailand, founded over 600 years ago. It is best known as the birthplace of King Naresuan, who freed the country from Burmese domination in the late 16th century, and that of his brother and successor King Ekathosarot (Sanphet III). As the crossroad between the northern and central regions of the country, it has long been important both for political and strategic reasons, and was fought over many times in centuries past. Phitsanulok was the capital of Thailand for 25 years during the reign of King Boromma Trailokanat of Ayutthaya. On the banks of the Nan River, the city was originally a small Khmer outpost known as Song Kwae, before the Khwae Noi River changed its course in the 11th century CE. Phitsanulok was also a provincial center of the Angkorian Empire during the Angkorian period. Phitsanulok is home to Naresuan University and Pibulsongkram Rajabhat University, as well as to a major Royal Thai Army base.

I went there with my friends in the night late. We ordered some western and Thai food and food is quite good especially deep fried snapper with herb. The restaurant is goo atmosphere but limited indoor area that quite challenge for the rainy season. During we had dinner, it was suddenly hard raining then we requested to move up to the indoor area but unfortunately the table is not available. Therefore, we found 3 waiters are very very care of us because they tried to help us by finding the plastic burlap to cover a tent for us. This is very excellent service. We will definitely recommend this restaurant to other people.

It's a 20 minute walk from the train station. I ordered a coffee latte for 70 Baht which is expensive. The 7-11's do the same coffee for 30 Baht and while a small cafe can't really compete directly with the 7-11 you shouldn't be charging more than double especially 20 minutes walk from the city centre. Rant over ;-) There is free wifi. Service was swift and friendly. She did ask whether I wanted it sweet or not which is always good to hear as I hate it when I forget and get super sweet coffee. Thanks :-)

If you are staying in Phitsanulok it is worth a trip to Calito, just across the river from the railway station and night market. The terrace overlooks the river and the music wad good. The beer was cold and the food was excellent. We were there on Valentines day so it was full and there was a band providing entertainment. The atmosphere was really good and the service excellent with English spoken well.

They have two locations. This is for the one located in the center of town at the Lithai guesthouse. Pleaseant, very clean comfortable and air conditioned. A nice break from street food. They serve both Thai and some western dishes. There is very little western food available here in Phitsanulok, The western food is tasty, albeit not totaly authentic. The Thai dishes are quite good. English menu. Staff speaks very little English but point at the menu and you'll be OK. Service can be a bit slow. They also have a bakery and everything looks good. They make a unique but tasty slider (look for cheeseburger on the menu). Prices are quite reasonable. Part of the Lithai guesthouse which is a good cheap place to stay.

Cafe Veggie

Nice atmosphere and well decorated. It's a industrial feel but still cost. We were looking for aircon and something else than what you eat on the street. The strawberry yogurt smoothie was amazing, we loved the wedgies and the salad was fine. (Too much dressing and too little "content". 4 crumbs of feta cheese and 3 cherry tomatoes.) The soup was more cream than veggie, but the taste was great. I can really recommend it if you're up for some more western food but not the touristic type. The prices are high for what you get, but not high enough to make us feel that we paid too much...

This is a stylish coffee house and restaurant, frequented primarily by upscale Thais. Very nice decor, Thai and western menu. My wife had a salmon roll with Caesar dressing, Very little salmon and very fishy dressing. I had a hamburger and though not cooked as requested (asked for medium, got well done) it was quite tasty. My wife order a special "coffee pop", looked beautiful, and at best I can only say it tasted very weird. With water and two small beers the tab came to about 700 baht. Not cheap but OK for a change of pace.
