Cold Storage was a few minutes walk from Scandia House, where we were staying. Shortly after check in we were on the prowl for AK fish/seafood.....not as easy a task as one might think. The fishing industry is very regulated with most of the catch exported. Locals do their own fishing or buy from friends who do.
I had read about Cold Storage on TA. It was our 1st king crab of the trip, which was a priority and halibut fish n' chips...all very good. It's a combination market/cafe.Their freezers full of all kinds of marine goodies made us wish we had a kitchen to cook.
We enjoyed Cold Storage.

I have been here on a couple trips to Alaska. They have a cute location right inside a local hotel and make up some great hot and cold drinks. If you visit Petersburg, make sure this is one of your stops!

Good food that accommodates many preferences. I had the black bean burger which was good. My husband had the fish tacos and they were good. They serve alcohol and have outside or covered seating. There restroom looks like a portable potty but it is a bathroom with gray natural lighting.

Family owned and family friendly. We are very busy during the noon hour with local fishermen and school kids. 50 Seats available for dining.
Who would have thought, eh? Certainly not me! I go into this hole in the wall expecting a 7-11 type conveyer belt oven. Not surprisingly it's rated behind two fish joints in one of the world's most hardcore fishing towns, but hey, this is one is a big win not matter what. To find out there's Pizza this good here was a shocker for me. I worked Pizza for years decades ago at some top shops around the NW US, and this was as good as I've ever had. I have even been to Italy twice!
This is a nice think pizza (not deep dish but not NY) which is carefully cooked to perfection on big, granite slate ovens. The toppings were piled on but done so with such thought and precision that nothing felt out of place. The pizza, a "Hot Mama" was one of the deepest, most complex pieces of pie I've ever had but the crust, the oven, the toppings were all perfect. I had to go back to my hotel and share it with anyone I found. Someone at this Pizza joint really knows what they're doing and cared to bring some great pizza to Population 900 Petersburg! Thanks!

We ate breakfast here and returned for lunch. For breakfast, the food had been prepared and was sitting under warming lamps. It was nice to be able to see what you were ordering. I had quiche which was excellent, although I would have liked it served hotter. It came with arugula salad. Friends had a frittata which was good. Unfortunately, my husband had a tortilla dish which he said was tasteless and topped with cold, rubbery eggs. Pastries were available and they looked delicious.
For lunch, we chose sandwiches to go. All of our choices were delicious.
Prices were high, but not outrageous for Alaska. There is no table service and silverware is plastic.
I would recommend The Salty Pantry and would return if ever in the area.

Glacier Express uses coffee from Longbottom roasters in Hillsboro, OR. I find it to be the best coffee available in Petersburg. Also offered are various teas and soft drinks. The freshly baked goods and pastries are also very good. The customer space available is also the largest of the coffee shops. It is kid and family friendly, meaning there can be small kids running around at times. If that bothers you, be warned.

This is a quiet family restaurant where we love to see one group of guest visiting the next table of guests. Food service is fast but we do not serve fast food, we make it all right here in our kitchen. Home town atmosphere. Oh yeah, food is served real plates and silverware is also genuine. Connected with the cafe is an all Alaskan made Gift Shop and a smoke accessories shop.
True confessions I didn't eat here, my husband did. I am vegan and the only thing I could have eaten would have been a side of tomatoes. My husband have the salmon omelette with a biscuit and hash browns, it was edible but nothing to write home about . They do sell single cans of salmon produced locally.

We visited this restaurant in our search for some non fat food in Petersburg Alaska. Which is quite an achievement. You can find hamburgers in each and every corner. Food with some veggies is hard to find. Sevice was good and also the quality of the food. Veggies delight for my daughter. I took the sweet and sauer chicken. Do not go here for an romantic date. Most like you will be the only guest and be watched all the time.

My experience of Petersburg is that it's hard to find restaurant food that isn't fried, pizza or burgers. Helse fills that void--at least for breakfast or lunch. While the fact that it's also a vitamin shop is a little weird, the ambience is actually friendly, comfortable, and quiet. Also, the food is really good. Among the four of us eating, we had delicious home made bean soup, great pancakes and eggs, and a great "happy turkey" sandwich (with cream cheese and cranberry sauce) on home made bread. Also excellent ice cream. My one caveat is that my sister reported that the gravy in the biscuits and gravy was very floury. I have no idea--I didn't taste it. Also, if you like strong coffee (which I do) you might look elsewhere.
Note: If you're looking for lunch in Petersburg make sure you eat before two o'clock. Lot's of places seem to close by then, including Helse. Also, I rated this as mid-range, but since it's Alaska it might be considered cheap eats.
