If you are looking for a restaurant to take your girlfriend/fiancé/wife, this is not the place for you. This restaurant is perfect for a guys night out--the food is typical Portuguese and very VERY heavy. The food keeps coming from appetizers to dessert along with the wine. Going here with a group of Portuguese men as an American made the experience even more amazing. I would definitely suggest this place if you are around the area. Service was good, not amazing but very friendly.

We stopped in on the road from Pinhao to porto for a late lunch. The food was fantastic, made fresh and really tasty. Great prices and range of food. We speak no Portuguese but found it no problem even in this remote place. Well worth a visit for a meal.

A very nice informal restaurant. The waiter doesn't speak English but just let him decide what to eat. You will get the finest local dishes (kind of tapas ).

Unassuming place - in a family house / garden. Everything served here is homemade, fresh and local. Do not forget to taste also their "de la casa" wine.
Restaurant with stone tables is situated in the garden with a stream and a mill, where they sow the flour and bake their own bread. You will meet here mainly the local, so do not hesitate to soak up authentic atmosphere and enjoy their fresh foods.

Flavors of traditional root, which evidenced through techniques of modern cuisine, taking forms of spheres and tears. Portuguese cuisine with certainty, and contemporary fusion twist. We hope to serve you.
This is a great place for that really special meal. Very friendly and helpful staff, nice ambience and a menu which was amazing in its variety of choices. The food was beautifully presented and tasted delicious. The puddings were amazing as well. Book this for that special occassion

Before I go any further I'm going to have another winge about TripAdvisor's 5-point rating system. It's just too crude. So, as per my title, this place deserves better than 4/5 but I will only give 5/5 for somewhere really excellent/exceptional. Rant over!
We were recommended O Engarco by our guide at Quinta da Aveleda who also kindly 'phoned ahead and booked a table for the 8 of us.
Our waiter was excellent - suggesting a variety of petiscos which we followed with a shared steak platter. He also chose wines to go with the dishes and chatted about both. We enjoyed that lunch so much we immediately booked for dinner the next day (the last of out stay in Portugal). That followed a similar pattern - petiscos (mostly different to those we had on our first visit) this time followed by fresh sea bass served at the table.
Verdict - very, very nearly full marks - well worth a visit if you're in the Penafiel area.

We visited Restaurante Rocha at the advice of a friend and Reading the reviews, and then went again later in the week. It is quite large and spacious (is stretches far beyond the entrance room with the counter). There is a decent car park at the side of the building.
The food consist of a variety of regional and national Portuguese dishes. We tried the baked cod, the pork cheek, roast pork, and beef. All were well-cooked and tasty, as were the cold starters. There is a short but value for money wine list, mostly with local wines
Regarding the service, although we arrived very early, spoke virtually no Portuguese and had two small children in tow, we were given a wonderful welcome, with no effort spared to make our meals as pleasant as possible.
Value for money is outstanding by English standards. For dinner for 2 plus 2 children, with adults getting three courses plus wine we spent around EUR40.

We ate at the Wine Bar twice during the northern leg of our Portugal trip and had two fantastic meals. Set in a small preserved village, the restaurant is nestled into a storybook setting of winding stone roads and mountain views. While the ambiance is quaint and rustic, the food is refreshingly innovative and offers up some delicious twists on many traditional Portuguese dishes. We ate there with a large group which is the perfect way to sample all the small plates on the menu. Particular group favorites included the bread with chunks of chorizo, quail eggs in little edible nests, stuffed peppers and the amazing octopus salad. While the restaurant is pitched as a wine bar with tapas, the portions are substantial, so we dialed back our second night to lighter dishes which were the ones that really shone. The food was complemented by great service during both of our visits which we all immensely enjoyed. This should be a must stop if you are staying in the Penafiel area - we highly recommend!
