Maria's Fifties Diner

My previous review I raved about the smoked meat platter. Sadly they no longer have it. They have instead a Smoked meat sandwich deluxe which they tried to tell me was the platter. It is not. It is a smoked meat sandwich with a plate full of soggy fries. The Greek salad was just okay. Way too much dressing on it and overpriced. I will not hurry back here.

Two Cougars and a Cafe

Reviewed By David B

I have driven past this place from time to time over the years but had never ventured inside until today. It's located in an industrial type of strip mall in the gritty north end of town, and from the outside it is nothing to look at. Upon entering you find yourself in a comfortable place with a fishing/waterfront kind of decor with some bar space and a fair amount of tables. I had wandered in at lunch time on a Friday and had no trouble getting a seat. The two ladies doing the serving on this date are probably the above mentioned Cougars and are half of what made this such a good place (the food is the other half). You can expect that you will be called Hon or darling, they may sit down at your table or booth with you while they take you order, and I did see one of them give a friendly back hand to the arm of one of the customers. To summarize they made visiting here fun. They have a limited menu for breakfast and another for dinner, They also have their daily specials written on a large chalk board. They are only open from 7:00 am to 3 p.m. I chose to order off the Special Board and went with the Grilled Cheese with Ham and a Soup ($9.50). Of the two offered soup options I chose the Cream of Potato Soup which arrived within minutes of me ordering. It was a nice creamy soup of the right thickness and with a few small pieces of carrot in it. I'm a soup guy and this one was good and I appreciate that it is made right in the restaurant. My grilled cheese with ham arrived a few minutes later and was ......well it was a grilled cheese with chicken fingers in it. I pointed this out to the waitress who offered to change it but I said I was fine with it as it was. That was when the second lady came out and explained she was responsible for the mixup and apologized (that is how you take a bad and turn it into a good). And she quickly corrected the chalk board. The grilled cheese with chicken fingers was.. a bit odd but I kind of liked it. Seeing as I was so very pleased with round one I decided to proceed onto round 2 and went with the Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, heated and with ice cream of course. She admitted that these were not made in house, but wherever they are made they are very good. I walked through the door not expecting much from this place, and when I walked out I was a full fledged fan and looking forward to a return visit. THIS PLACE IS WELL WORTH A VISIT.

Greetings all, We have lived in Ancaster for many years and enjoy the breakfast at this venue a great deal.Consistently good service, good food, and comfortable atmosphere. If you want a chain restaurant there's plenty to choose from nearby...and we say, don't waste your time and money. My favourite is the Monte Cristo sandwich, however all choices the family makes are enjoyed. Keep up the good work Sammy's!

California eggs Benedict was good. Home fries were average. The all abroad breakfast was great and worth it. The scramble eggs and sausage were really good. The waitress was alone and really busy but was still friendly and great. The overall atmosphere was small but was cute. One big complaint was that the bathrooms were dirty. Would go back.

We had a reservation for 10, and it was ready and prepared for us. The server was efficient and nice. The place was clean and inviting. It seemed busy and popular and we came because of the popular reviews on this site. The portions were huge and all look good. Half of our party had enough to take home. Prices were reasonable too. There is lots of parking too.

Came here under a friends recommendation who absolutely loves this place. We both got eggs Benedict with their traditional home fries. Price was fantastic and the potatoes were AMAZING. Absolutely loved the breakfast potatoes and would recommend highly. The Benedict was good but not the best I’ve ever had. Staff was quick, kind. The food came fairly fast. Would recommend overall.
