RD's Southern BBQ

Found this restaurant on Yelp when I googled "tomahawk steak". Called them up to inquire and was transfered to chef John. He was very pleasant and explained to me there are 3 sizes and I would have to pre-order - an $80, $100 and $120 tomahawk. I told him once I finalize the date, I would call him to order the size and make the reservation. A week later I called asking for him and no one knew when he'd be in. I called again at least 6 more times and got the same response - do they not know their own chefs schedule? Instead I finally spoke to Petra a few times (once she said she'd call me back and never did) who now tells me the $120 large steak is not the big one. We went back and forth and I requested to speak to chef John each time I called to go over what he had initially told me. Finally after 3 calls in one day after I had already made the reservation with Petra, I got a hold of chef John. He told me the $120 is a large 3 lb tomahawk and that I will be very pleased. We finally showed up for our Friday 7:30 reservation and were seated with only 5-6 tables in the restaurant - not busy. The restaurant was nothing special - located in a strip plaza and looked more like a roadhouse diner. Either way I was excited to have my favorite tomahawk steak for my birthday. We ordered 2 appetizers, 2 entrees as well as the steak - of which I was never asked how I'd like it cooked. After the appetizers, the waitress was no where to be found to clear the plates, refill our drinks or to even take our order for the 2 entrees. We had to get 2 different bus boys (or waiters, not sure, they were walking in and out of the kitchen a lot more than our waitress was) to clear the table, refill our drinks, and get our waitress so we can order the entrees. She finally shows up and we order the entrees - easily 40 mins from the time we were seated and 20 mins after we had finished the appetizers. Within 10 mins, my tomahawk steak came out - well done where I normally get medium rare. Get this... it was missing the large bone that makes it a tomahawk! Disappointed, I asked the waitress where the bone was and she told me it was cut off to cook it easier and that she too was surprised it came out without it. I told her all their other customers had gotten it with the bone as I had seen in their photos on Yelp that many of their other customers had received! Then Petra finally shows up and tells me that that's the way it came in when they ordered it (meanwhile chef John told me he hand picks it from their butcher AND a different story than what the waitress had just told me), and that they had probably ran out of the tomahawk and that they don't sell it with the bone any more. Which was it?? I tell her you can't "run out" of a tomahawk and when they "send you" a steak without the bone, it's not a tomahawk. She again tries to tell me a tomahawk is a special cut and they must have ran out. (1) why wouldn't anyone tell me this since I called many times after it was apparently ordered/picked up - even having called the day before and day of the reservation? (2) Petra clearly thought I was an idiot not knowing what a tomahawk was OR she clearly doesn't know her steaks. I've had over 20 tomahawks and know that it's a on-the bone rib steak, cut from the fore-rib with the entire long rib bone left on! So not only was I disappointed, but I was fooled and lied to. This was one of if not the worst experience I had at a restaurant and I'm also in the industry and know how customers should be treated. Chef John didn't even come out once to apologize or explain. Not only did RD's ruin my birthday, but they did so after spending $180 without drinks for me and my two young children. Even they saw my disappointment and felt bad. Stay away from this place.

Family run authentic delicious Portuguese food! I'm Portuguese and this place makes me proud. Everyone I've ever introduced to this place has fallen in love. Offers much more than just chicken rice and potatoes also! Do yourself a favour and check this place out, it's reasonable and you won't be disappointed! For an extra treat get the natas for dessert. Just ask they will point you to them!

The charga chicken is obviously their speciality and they do a good job. Its not too spicy and comes with a platter of rice. But I have to say I liked the spicy malai kebab better. The lamb curry was average. Naan was good. Overall good for takeout or a quick sit in. Will definitely go back for more.
