Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France Food Guide: 4 Mediterranean food Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Biarritz

March 15, 2020 Giuseppe Pratt

Reviews on Mediterranean food in Biarritz, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France. A stylish beach town on France’s southwestern coast, Biarritz was once the vacation spot for nobility and is now Europe’s surfing capital. It’s experienced a tourist renaissance—summers are busy. Biarritz lacks the Riviera’s glitz, but you’ll see affluent vacationers in designer gear and surfers in flip-flops, and hear French, Spanish and Basque. The Grande Plage is the center of the action. Behind it, visit the restored, Art Deco casino and wander the streets down to the old port to the west.

We came back three times. Not expensive in Biarritz terms. We had the prawns in garlic, grilled steak, octopus, fresh tuna - all griddled. They have a large selections of mantaditos on display for smaller snacks. A huge selection of wines. Atmosphere is nice and is usually buzzing.

We ate here when spending one night in Biarritz. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and we were greeted by a very attentive host. The food was good - but not outstanding. We had 2 x three courses and a bottle of wine for €100, which was a little pricey, but we were happy overall.

This place had good reviews, we were nearby and were on the mood for tapas so we decided to give it a shot. Well, the whole dining experience was a disappointment. The staff both in terms of waiters and in the kitchen seem to be a bunch of amateurs who shouldn’t be in the restaurant business. First we were seated and not given menus so we got a couple from a neighboring table. While placing our order, the waitress literally interrupted us not once, not twice, not three times but four times to engage with another customer! They also offer pre-made tapas on the counter. There are no signs that explain what they are and the guy behind the counter didn’t want to be bothered. I have been to Spain many times and sampled a wide range of tapas I can tell you that the tapas at Crampotte don’t come anywhere close to the real thing. At some point during the dinner we noticed the staff gathered near the door, smoking and watching videos on their phones and laughing. Total bunch of amateurs. Maybe this place does good business in a highly touristy town but I cant recommend under any circumstances.

We came in here by chance as it was market night and everywhere was so busy. The roasted mixed vegetable starter was delicious and accompanying focaccia excellent. However the lasagne was poor, sauce bland and whole portion mushy. The lettuce was covered in an oil so bitter I could not eat it. Good service. If you are looking for somwhere to eat in Biarritz look at my review on the Thai restaurant.
