Russia’s historic gateway to Western Europe, the North-West is home to St. Petersburg, the country’s capital until the early 18th century. A very large area bordering Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Belarus in the west (as well as Kaliningrad, the little extra slice of Russia that lies between Lithuania and Poland), North-West Russia stretches in the east to the Ural Mountains. A large number of Russia’s national parks are here, as well as the historically significant areas of Novgorod and Karelia.

NISKA Tourist center offers 6 luxury cottages. Each cottage includes 2 independent flats with separate entrances. Maximum occupancy is 3 persons per one flat. Category “comfort” is 4 cozy rooms located in the separate wing of the restaurant building. There are 2 showers and 2 WC for 4 rooms.
We really liked this place. The location is just stunning. It is located at the end of a tiny village in the middle of nowhere, hours away from the nearest settlement. From the front of the huts you look out over a huge lake, from the windows at the back you are looking straight into the forest. It is very very quiet and peaceful. We were there during the white nights, which was beautiful. I am sure it must be amazing in the winter as well. Everything is very comfortable. In many ways it reminded us of a nice safari lodge, and it is amazing that they are able to operate at such a high level in such an isolated location. The rooms are very large with very comfortable beds, actually some of the most comfortable I can remember anywhere (Four Seasons, home etc included). Everything is very clean. The food is great. The portions are very large and they use of lots of local ingredients: fish, game, organic vegetables and eggs from their own garden and greenhouses. The owner has obviously put a lot of love, thought energy and money into the place, and the staff are fantastic. We really felt welcomed by everyone. There is quite a large flock of chickens, a number of rabbits and several very large but friendly dogs (kept chained up) as well, which might be nice for children. The location is one of the things which makes this place special but you do need to know what you are letting yourselves in for. The road from Kestenga is really bad, even by Karelian standards. It took us over 5 hours to drive 70km. The road is full of huge potholes and huge rocks; we were in a small Jeep, if we'd been in a normal car it would have been difficult. You also need to be careful not to run out of petrol - the nearest petrol station is a long way away in Loukhi. It is possible to leave your car in Sofporog which you can get to on a bad - as opposed to awful - road and get picked up by boat - even though it is quite expensive it is worth considering. There is also no mobile reception or Internet access. We are really glad to have had the opportunity to stay in this amazing place.

On the territory of the base there are 6 new comfortable cottages with accommodation from 4 to 12 people at a time. The bedrooms overlook the lake, and on the other side the house is surrounded by a picturesque clean forest. Next to the cottages there is a well-maintained sandy beach of Pastorskoe Lake.
