This is a very typical Portuguese cafe with old timers watching the TV above the bar and the endless clink of coffee cups. There's an outside seating area that's elevated above the road so you don't have cars going past you. Service was very efficient and it's very cheap by UK or US standards. Doesn't serve much by way of food so this is drinks and ice creams only.

They're open on Mondays when most restaurants are closed, and they have very affordable options when compared to the region's average price of a meal.

I'm half Portuguese and in July 2018 attended a family reunion for over 80 cousins - taking over the whole restaurant. Wasn't sure if they'd cope but was pleasantly surprised. Usual meat starters - chorizo etc - and then a cod dish followed by veal - both very good. Then a massive assortment of cakes and this is a country that loves its sweets. The service was very efficient and no delays between courses. It's clearly one of the better restaurants in Mogadouro and in a residential street near the town centre. If you want proper local dishes served to a good quality then I'd recommend.

Kalifa Ok

Tucked in a side stret just down from the castle remains is Kalifa. On arrival you might think the place is more modern than it actually is as it has had a recent makeover. It is however a fairly standard codfish and steak menu restaurant. Friendly and attentive staff ( but it was a quiet Tuesday night), food was tasty steak and fish for us!, portions on the large side. The wine list is local and like the food menu - not extensive which makes it easy.Overall a decent restaurant, but the offering and ambience overall didn't stack up to the cost if our meal for two in a quiet, off the beat town. You didn't feel the owners were capitalising on anything particularly authentic or local. We ate similar food elsewhere, this is not an area for an exploration of full Portuguese cuisine (stick to the coast for that), but at less expense. Our meal for two with douro wine cost €50, probably €15-20 too much unless you value portion size over better fare.

5 of us for dinner, ordered a variety of mains. The ham, cheese and olives were the highlight. The francesinha was an interesting interpretation of the traditional dish, never had it with frankfurters inside before. The lamb and prawns were well present. The cod (bacalhau) was forgotten, and 2 of our party's dinner only arrived when we had finished.... Disappointing when not so many were dining in the whole restaurant.

A Lareira

The restaurant is excellent, and gets its name from a massive log-burning fireplace that takes up one corner of the room. It comes complete with spit and metal racks holding cooking pots and is framed by two stacks of plates warming in the glow. Next to the fireplace is a large pile of logs, ready to burn. (See pic.)From the street the restaurant is far from inviting, as what you see is a large and unadorned room populated by older men sitting at tables drinking coffee and wine. You pass straight through this room to enter the restaurant - with its log fire blazing - and enter another domain. It is much more formal and a bit old-fashioned, with tables dressed with starched white tablecloths and waiters spooning vegetables from tureens onto your plate. The meals are massive and excellent value for money. Lunch was 12 Euros and consisted of bean soup, bread, wine, steak and veggies (potatoes, carrots, more beans), coffee, and a dessert of poached pears in port-wine. It was all delicious - and very filling. If that was too much you could just order items individually such as the soup or salad for 1.50 Euros each. Coffee was 1.20. A fantastic experience. Note that there is not a lot of English spoken here.

Great food and very personable hosts who are creating something original in a smallish village. Recent;ly-renovated space with unusual decor but lots of ambience. Very friendly personable hosts who speak a number of languages. Got the fire stoked up for us even though we arrived late and served a delicious assortment of what was on the menu for that day.
