This restaurant came highly recommended by family members who live nearby, so I was excited to try it. It was a very warm evening so we ate outside in the Biergarten. The setting was nice, and the large umbrellas provided some relief from the sun. The Biergarten is located beside a park, so our small children enjoyed playing while we waited to be served. And wait we did. It took quite a while for a server to initially come to our table even though we had arrived early before things got busy. All of us ordered drinks and then waited, and waited, and WAITED for them to arrive. Another long wait followed before our food orders were taken. I ordered pizza with cheese, spinach, small shrimp, and garlic. When the food finally arrived, I found the pizza to be totally unremarkable. I'll never understand why so many restaurants serving pizza think that a quality pie is made with doughy, soft crust. Crust MAKES a pizza, and piling ingredients on top of chewy thick crust destroys it. Moreover, the shrimp had that obvious straight-from-the-can/jar blandness. They might has well have been left off since they were tasteless. Overall, the pizza was much like a chain store pizza factory on a bad day. Service during the meal continued to be non-existent. One person in our group asked for salt(why wasn't it on the table to begin with?) and it arrived AFTER she finished her meal. The only time we as a table seemed to matter was when the Biergarten got busy toward the end of our time there. At that point servers came by several times to ask if we needed something else and to make a point of taking the salt to another table. This push was made for us to leave even though two members of our group still had practically full glasses of wine. In summary, I was unimpressed with both the food and the service here. The only real positive was the outdoor setting. I would not recommend this place to others.

I had some really nice local German food here. Freshly cooked, nicely presented and nicely traditional. Even better than the food however is the owner with his witty positiveness and absolute dedication to good service. It's a pity the place draws a bit dull crowd, because it really deserves to be noticed.

I revisited Haus Mersmann with the same friends, and again ordered the house specialty â the schnitzel. This time I ordered the usual schnitzel with grilled onions, and asked for Jaeger Sauce (dark gravy with mushrooms) on the side, which was an excellent addition. The salads were fresh, varied and tasty. The accompanying pommes frites were properly done, American-style and ketchup was provided without sniggering when requested. I also had an appetizer bowl of very good tomato soup, served with thinly sliced rye. The only glitch was no butter for the rye bread slices, the explanation being that the only butter was Krauter butter (already seasoned with herbs). Otherwise, it was enjoyable and a very satisfying dinner experience.

My husband, two children and I had dinner at Olckenturm with my husband's German colleague and his wife. We were greeted in both German and English by the young waitress, who also gave us English menus and helped to explain the dishes. Initially we were seated outdoors, which was pleasant, though the bugs were a nuisance. However, we moved indoors as a thunderstorm settled in. The restaurant is actually built into part of the old city wall, which was pretty cool. It was not very busy (we were there on a weeknight), and we had very attentive service. Our dinners were all fairly traditional German meals--quite heavy, and a bit saltier than we prefer. More vegetables and some lighter options would have been nice, but I suspect on a cold winter's night, this fare would really hit the spot! All in all, a good experience.

I was in Dortmund for business and was commenting that I could not find any German restaurants. The place I was visiting took us to this restaurant, which seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. You access the place by going down a narrow tree lined road as it is situated in a forest. I am not fluent in German, but I gathered that they served game from the surrounding woods and had a lake on the premises and footpaths. The food was excellent as well as the service. Truly homemade food that was traditional German cuisine. I loved my veal and my associated had salmon that was well prepared. There was a beef soup for an appetizer that was just spicy enough to be tantalizing to the palate. I hope to go back again to try other items on the menu. Note that Thursday is game night and they had deer and boar as I recall. There were others, but I do not recall what they were. Local beer and just fresh, wholesome, hoe-cooked food- what better can you get? Their website is www.jaghaus-im-kuehl.de if you need more information. They have outside seating in the summer time and the décor is kind of alpine hunting lodge if I had to guess. The nice touch was the real fireplace that made the room nice and warm and cozy.
