Reviews on Contemporary food in Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Essen began in the mid-9th century as home to a women's abbey, then during the Renaissance became an important coal mining town and later a major steel production center. The famed metal-working Krupp family opened their first foundry here in 1810. One of Essen's most interesting places is the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, once the largest colliery in the world. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it attracts 800,000 visitors a year, often hosting art exhibitions and performances.

We went there for a family event and we couldn t have found a more suitable, friendly place, relaxed with honest and excellent food served by very friendly, personal and attentive service. Every dish was served "Ã point". My Schnitzel would win every "Schnitzel-Test" and all the other meals looked so delicious that we need to come back soon to get more of this super tasty food.I especially like the styling of this small, casual chic and cosy restaurant which hits the taste of time. The hosts were absolutely professional and very friendly with attention to detail. As Aperitiv we had a wonderful drink called "Schiffer s Brause", that contained Prosecco with Lime and another ingredient, lovely decorated with some Rosemary.Werden, this little market town and part of Essen with it s "Fachwerk" traditional houses does already have some very good restaurants, mainly Italian. It definitely need a new restaurant like "Schiffer s" with very authentic, superb German cuisine. For a warm Summer evening there is space in the backyard for "al fresco dining" outside.Highly recommended!

I have been there several years ago, and there were wonderful things like whole grain noodles gratinee and salad with raspberry vinegar available. But this time things changed. Anyway, I had a salad with cheese, that was ok, except the olives that were a little dry and not nice tasting, but was enough for me. My company had something like blätterteig quiche mit lachs. However, this has nothing to do with a quiche, it was only a puff pastry (unfilled) with some salmon on top. It was not bad, but misdescribing what you get !Long story short, nice atmosphere, nice waitress, meals were worse than years ago (but ok) and currently bad in detail (olives) or described wrongly on the menu.Choice of wine is still good and satisfying everyone.Offered bottled water (Selters) is normaly chilled and ok, but with room temperature without nice taste!Ah yes, no smoker, but the smoking people is just outside in front of the door, entering means a walk through smoke !

Small and cozy restaurant a few steps from the most lively street in Essen, it will amaze you with a menu that is not very extensive but definitely creative. Foods mainly inspired by the Mediterranean tradition with a quid of Germanic that makes them curious even for those who come from the Mediterranean. For chosing wines, contact the owner: consistent wine producers with interesting labels. Don't even ask for it to be cheap, but ... recommendable!
