This restaurant is amazing in so many aspects! This is the hard-to-find authentic, family run Italian restaurant that you would travel a distance to dine in! Every dish that we have ordered there is superb, especially the fried calamari, Detroit pizza and the special 2 pound stuffed meatballs (offered on special dates.) On top of the mouth watering meals, the prices are very reasonable and the whole staff is so friendly (be sure to ask for Gina, the wife of one of the owners/chefs as your waitress! What a doll she is!). Another honorable mention is the reasonably priced wine list that includes very nice Italian wines that compliment the meals. Our whole family has embraced this restaurant as a “favorite”, so much so that upon their last visit, we cancelled a 5 star restaurant reservation (this was a unanimous vote!) in Davidson to dine there TWO nights in a row. It’s a fabulous restaurant to bring a large family to - sure to please everyone! I’m getting a little hungry just thinking about it..... Well done Pellegrinos! We will be back soon.

We eat here fairly regularly, and really enjoy the food. The restaurant is family owned, and everyone is so nice. I recently tried the chicken parmesan for the first time. It was really wonderful - fresh, hot and flavorful. It comes with garlic bread and a salad (the house-made Greek dressing is really good), and I had enough to take some home. I plan to try the eggplant parmesan next time. It's made fresh to order, and if it's anything like the chicken, it will be a winner too! There are lunch specials during the week too.

Mezzaluna II

Reviewed By gettysart

We arrived mid week for a late lite lunch and there were just two other tables eating. The atmosphere was quiet and lovely and so was the menu. I was excited to have authentic Italian food, because Mezzaluna didn’t look like your average pizza joint. We originally stopped at a very busy sandwich place, but decided that Italian food sounded better. Server promptly waited our table, answered questions, took our order, and got drinks to us. Soup was on the menu, but we were told that it wasn’t served in the summer. Soup and salad is great lite meal at any time of year, but oh well. We adapted and found something else of interest. Two ordered appetizers and two ordered meals. The balsamic shrimp appetizer came with 7 small- medium sized shrimp on top of a sliver of lettuce with barely any balsamic vinegar. The Capresi salad (tomato, basil, mozzarella, balsamic salad) had 7 pink tomato slices, sparsely topped with a few chopped basil leaves. The mozzarella was good. I just could not understand the meager amounts/ poor quality of vegetables, considering the fact that we are in the midst of growing season when fresh ripe tomatoes and basil are bountiful everywhere on local farms. This Capresi salad also lacked balsamic dressing. My family requested balsamic vinegar and bread to dip the sauce in. A tiny take out cup arrived with balsamic, and we shared it on our salads. My daughter, who is known for getting a “doggy bag” at every restaurant, ate her kids meal rather quickly, and announced she was still hungry. She liked the raviolis, but didn’t finish her sauce. I encouraged her to eat it with some bread, and when she reached into the basket, we realized there had only been one slice delivered to our table, which another family member had already eaten. I’ve never been to an Italian restaurant that doesn’t freely bring out bread at the beginning of a meal, and I am never one to ask for a second basket, but we later had to request enough bread for those in our family who were eating bread. Not all were eating it. The family member who’d ordered a meal said it was good, but didn’t compare to her favorite hometown Italian restaurant, in terms of portion size and flavor. I’ve dined elegantly in Paris and have also eaten at restaurants in third world countries, but I will have to say that this experience was bizarre for an American restaurant, in terms of serving sizes. I am one to always comment that our country’s restaurants tend to give extremely generous portions- but this was not nearly the case here. I got the impression that Mezzaluna 2 was struggling for business, but this kind of service is not the way to cut costs. Offer your customers good fresh vegetables and reasonable portions and they’ll return. My Greek friends whose restaurant was struggling asked grandma to help out the restaurant by expanding her backyard garden to help supplement fresh ingredients and to design fresh herb planters outside as part of the decor to help with produce! It was a success! Offer bread or bread sticks before the meals with a spot of olive oil and some herbs, without making the customers request it. Maybe add some interesting monthly themed dinners, wine and cheese pairings, specials. Use a nice bottle for the balsamic vinegar, not an impoverished 1/4 full plastic cup for two people to share. Ask if customers would like fresh ground pepper or grated cheese on their salad or pasta. Mezzaluna 2 is a pretty restaurant, and the food is all right. It has potential, but when a customer leaves feeling hungry after they’ve paid for a little more upscale culinary experience, it is not something they’ll want to rave about to other people. We were not offered dessert, but after the small plate/ large price tag experiences... We ate ice cream next door at Andrea’s for dessert and the portions were more than reasonable for the price.

Driving from West Virginia to NC for business, we stopped here based on the positive reviews. Being in a strip mall near a Big Lots didn't give us much confidence in the restaurant. But we had an excellent meal. I ordered the Chicken Cannelloni and it was one of the best meals I have ever had. The sauce was wonderful. My husband got the baked spaghetti and was very happy with it.
