El Corral Mexican Restaurant

A good solid choice for Mexican fare. Nothing fancy but all very good. Chips and salsa were brought to the table and the salsa was very tasty. I started with a queso appetizer, followed by a Burritos Tipicos. The burritos could have used more cheese on top - there was hardly any. I sat outside and the service was good but a bit slow.

Tonali

The owner/ chef of this restaurant was the sous chef at the very prestigious, now closed, Four Square. Every thing is prepared from scratch and the wait may be long sometimes because he does most of the cooking, but it's worth it. He also hires hispanic staff which does slow down the process, but we appreciate that he is employing them. Last night the crab and shrimp quesadillas, the watermelon gazpacho, the fish tacos, and the flan- all wonderful. Don't think you can get as good a Mexican meal anywhere else- and it's always good.

IMy husband and I both ordered this Cuban dish and we loved it.

Dos Perros

I was visiting Durham on my own for the wedding of friends, and after the reception, I needed only a small supper fairly late on a Friday. By chance I found Dos Perros, was seated instantly at the bar, and was served promptly and with grace. The menu is fairly traditional for a Mexican restaurant, but the presentation is excellent and the food is served with a real flourish and pride - and the pride is justified! No heavy Mexican entrees here! An extensive wine list was the icing on the cake, too! Very much recommended!

Mez

Ate at Mez yesterday evening – was expecting something great since I was a long time fan of 518 in Raleigh. Disappointed in virtually every way possible:1. Ordered fajitas – plate was cold – food was slightly warm. Chicken was warm, but obviously not freshly prepared – difficult to chew. The rice on my plate was equally cold – two of three tortillas were warm – not so the third and it literally fell apart in my hand.2. My wife ordered a chicken taco. The meet on the taco LOOKED like tuna fish from a can – it was ice cold and after tasting it, I’m not sure I know exactly what it was. I am not an connoisseur of Mexican food, but generally a taco is served in a warm soft tortilla (except at Taco Bell). This was a flat cold piece of tortilla.3. We ordered a side of corn pudding, and it was a small square in a bowl – it was also ice cold. 4. Our server was professional in demeanor, but decidedly unenthusiastic about our presence – he only visited out table to deliver the food, to ask about the food and upon relaying our comments above, he took the taco away and, based on our request, removed it from the bill. There was not adjustment or accommodation made for anything else. When I flagged him down to get my check, he wanted to know if we wanted desert – don’t think that was the right thing to ask – he did refill my water glass at that point as he was taking my credit card for payment.5. The men’s bathroom smelled sort of “old” if you know what I mean, but my wife advised me that the empty women’s restroom seemed to have a strong sewer type odor.Your restaurant is very attractive, but my assumption is you are busy at lunch, but not at dinner. We walked in the door at 5:45 and the scarcity of cars in the parking area should probably have clued us in, but I really wanted to eat at the restaurant so went forward anyway much to eventual disappointment.

Gonza Tacos y Tequila

Very different decor, dark inside and may scare small children, so eat outside if you have them with you.Service was quick and attentive enough. I heard other waiters tell groups of a special, but I was not told.Taco plates come with three SMALL cold flour taco's and one side. I chose the shrimp taco's and yucca as my side. I was charged extra for the yucca which was not good at all and was not told about the upcharge. Salsa was nice, chips average. An adult place that is good for large parties as the tables can be pulled together and it's very loud, so large parties can be as loud as they like....and they were. Not my kind of place....a lot of $ for a little food and the quality was just not there. I will not return.
