Specializing in exquisite and refreshing island cuisine in a classy yet casual tropical ambience, Barefoot Bernie's Tropical Grill & Bar has become a true destination on the Outer Banks restaurant circuit.
We stopped in to Barefoot Bernie's basically on a whim. We were trying to go to the place next door but the wait was too long. There were about 6 of us and we found a spot at the bar together. Our bartender was a bit salty in the absolute best kind of way. She had us laughing the whole time and was completely on top of it with keeping us with drinks and recommending stuff. We ordered some apps and had a few drinks and it ended up being a surprisingly good time. We are very happy that the place next door was too busy.

This is a fun little place, colorfully decorated with beach themed paintings on the walls, hundreds of old license plates on the low ceiling beams, and a fish tank serving as partial wall divider with at least one large gold fish. The front window side has a few booth seats, beyond that a long wrap around bar counter on one side, and half dozen wooden tables on the other. There is also a larger less busily decorated back dining room but didn't seem to be open this evening. Service a bit of a slow start, might be just opened for the evening, since once they took our orders food came super quickly. We had burger and fish tacos. Both excellent - although the tacos had the most plain tortilla, the contents were just about the best, with an abundance of fish chunks, more substantial than any other fish tacos I'd ever had. And both the burger and fish were very spicy - I read some reviews that complained about the excessive cumin used, but since I like cumin I thought it was tasty. My partner however did feel the burger was over seasoned, as he generally prefers minimally seasoned patties - so I guess you gotta love spicy food to love this place. But if you do, definitely check this place out.

Apparently in the fall Monday is fried chicken night. I asked our server and apparently 75+% of the meals are the fried chicken. The chicken was fried marvelously, very crispy but very moist inside. Collard greens were exceptional. Garlic mashed and corn bread were good. Both of us had the chicken and we both enjoyed it. Our friends who live in the area say everyone knows of fried chicken so donât plan meetings for Mondayâs. Have been there in past years but never for chicken but I encourage a visit anytime!
