Excellent service and stay

Reviewed By Graceful_Empanadas

A beautiful view of the beach, comfortable beds and a large clean room greeted us after a smooth check-in. Dinner and breakfast were tasty and made more special for their 90th anniversary in 2019. Service at the restaurant and at the front desk was very professional, always doing their best to cater to your needs. We stayed at another, more expensive, onsen ryokan in the area afterwards and this was leaps and bounds better! Stay on the premium floor here and you won't regret it!

Terrible service, old rooms, rowdy crowd

Reviewed By Graceful_Empanadas

I had a good impression upon entering the beautiful garden, and service was fine until I showed my foreign passport and the reception staff immediately switched to broken English... Some of them like to practise, so I don't really mind, but he cut out a bunch of things that other staff were explaining to the people beside me. The worst was he just left me after checking in to bring my own luggage to the room 3 halls away!!! I have never ever had to do that at a hotel, lest a ryokan! The room hadn't aged that well either and really needs an update. The tatami mats were discolored in patches and it didn't feel very clean. The baths were so busy that you'd never be able to get a key to the private ones, and you'd be lucky to even get a washing station at times. The only good thing was that there was a variety of facilities at the onsen, like cold water, hot water for pouring, plum salt etc... The private bath in the room was small, but actually pretty nice, except the view from my bath window was a garden hose. Dinner was a circus show. Lots of kids screaming around and people talking loudly. You had to line up along the stairs to get into the hall at your desired dining time! Food was below average and poor at times because of the quantity that needs to come out. Service was so lacking as a whole, so much that I needed to switch to the other seat because plates weren't cleared and I couldn't access the nabe! I enjoyed my other lodging at Shirahama so much better. Look elsewhere if you want a quiet onsen experience with good food and service!

The service!

Reviewed By Vicky B

We stayed here for 2 nights, the room was comfortable, breakfast was great. The view of the ocean was amazing! The gift shop is a must visit! So many unusual items at really good prices. What really blew us away was the staff. It drizzled a bit our first day while we were walking on the beach and before we made it to the front door a wonderful staff member ran out to meet us with towels. No matter what we needed or did not even know we needed they were there to assist us. Not only did they get us a taxi when we were leaving they insisted on carrying our luggage but all the staff members thanked us for coming and said good bye. I was sad to leave!

Good value for money! Comfortable room. Surprised by the nice hot spring.

Reviewed By utopia725

I paid 5850 yen for stay-only plan without meals in Sept 2015. Good value for money. The owner was very kind and helpful when I encountered a problem. E.g. they helped me call a taxi so that I could make it in time to watch the beautiful sunset in Engetsu Island! Good customer service. As a solo-traveller, room size was not big but enough and cosy. I chose a room with sea-view ( note that only Japanese-styled rooms have sea-view ) The futon was comfortable. Amenities were satisfactory. The bathroom and toilet looked nice, too. I will certainly recommend the hot spring. You can press a button and more hot spring water will come in. I guess it wasn't a peak season for tourists and since I was the only one inside at that time, so it kinda became a personal "Hydro massage" service for me. It was fun. Afterwards, I could watch >20 stars at my room and it's beautiful. Convenient location close to the nearest bus stop ( <10 min walk ). Check-in time is flexible. Even the door lock design is convenient and user-friendly. I'd like to stay there again in the future.

A very different experience. There's no getting away from the fact that it's in a beautiful place and you get a private bath on your balcony. That in itself will be enough for most people. For me though, I'm not sure if the entire experience was worth the 40,000 yen I paid. Firstly the good: The location is beautiful. The staff seem to be trying really hard The bath on the balcony was great Having a small beach in front to relax on was great The food was pretty good However, It really is quite expensive for what you get There are no closets in the rooms for storage The shower units are just a glass cylinder put inside the rooms. Difficult for tall people to use, and you need to literally step over your futons after your shower to get out to the tubs. The rooms don't really have any windows at all, so unless you are actually on the balcony, there is no view at all. The lighting in the rooms was very dark, even with all lights turned on The view from the top tier of rooms was half of the blue tarps and first tier below. You had to really stand up in the tub to actually see the ocean While sitting on the beach, the foul-smelling runoff from the hot tubs periodically comes gushing out of a hole in the wall beside you, splashing onto the rocks next to where you are sitting The staff seemed overly wanting to please, and yet kind of unprofessional at the same time. Did not feel like I was in Japan for some reason The whole place feels a bit cobbled together Overall we had a good time here. I'm just not sure it was worth the amount we paid.
