My wife and I have been to the Hacienda many, many times and have never had a bad experience! The Hacienda is the perfect place for a quiet meal. The ambiance is very intimate. Half of the restaurant space is divided into private booths decorated in bright Mexican colors! The other part has a working fireplace that is conducive to lingering on a cold winter night! Gilma (the owner) has decorated the restaurant with sombreros and Mexican artifacts that make a guest feel that he/she has been transported to Mexico!Upon arriving, you are welcomed with a big bowl of chips and homemade salsa. The salsa, probably the best you will ever taste, is Gilmaâs secret recipe. If you ask, she will tell you that making the salsa is a lot of work but she cannot bring herself to serve âstore boughtâ salsa to her guests. You will find this theme of âexceeding expectationsâ runs though all the food preparation at the Hacienda.Speaking of food, the food at the Hacienda is excellent! Before visiting the Hacienda, I thought Mexican food was tacos and quesadillas. What a shock I had â this is CLASSICAL Mexican food! My recommendations are: Camarones (Shrimp) Oaxaca, Steak and Portobello Mushrooms or Mole Enchiladas. My wife usually orders the Taco Salad and enjoys it a lot! The portions are large and, although I am fighting to control my weight, I always seem to be able to clean my plate! If you have room for dessert, try the bunuelo with vanilla iced cream. (p.s. Gilma gets her iced cream from Nastroâs in Newark â the best of the best!). Regarding service, we have always gotten very good service. We look forward to seeing Linn when we visit and are disappointed if he is not there. I should quickly add that we visit the Hacienda on Thursday nights when the crowds are not so great so we cannot comment on how service might be on a Saturday night. Oh, and as other people have noted, the Hacienda is a BYOB place! The bottom line is for unique food, ambiance and service, visit the Hacienda!

We had dinner tonight at Casa Maya - which was almost empty at dinnertime. I realize it's the middle of the week, but in the past when we visited this place was bustling with patrons. The chips that came with salsa at the beginning of the meal were stale. I alerted the waiter and he told me they were fine. We didn't eat them. The gazpacho soup my husband ordered was bland and tasted like it was made a few weeks ago. We ordered 2 of their special dishes - my Juarez (cheese & onion enchiladas and one taco with guacamole) were awful! The cheese in the enchiladas didn't taste like cheese and when I opened the enchilada which was smothered in sauce there wasn't any cheese inside - only onion. The taco which held the guacamole was also very hard & tasted stale.I never eat the yellow rice so can't attest to its taste but the refried beans had no taste. We've been coming here for over 25 years and I've never had a meal like this before. I can honestly say, this was the worst Mexican meal I've ever had.At the end of our meal, the bill came & it was overpriced by $38! When we told the waiter he apologized and said it was rung up incorrectly - it was fixed but now I have to watch that the credit goes through on the credit card.Sadly, we will not return. We do not live locally and there are definitely other Mexican restaurants closer to us we can go to in the future. My recommendation - go elsewhere. Casa Maya is no longer my casa.

After a movie, I was undecided about what I wanted to eat. So I started driving towards an area with a bunch of restaurants when I started thinking, maybe Mexican. I decided that if I found a parking space, I would try Jose's. I had been to the place in more than a decade. Found a spot and went in. Granted it was a Monday night, but he place was nearly empty. Back in the day, they were lined up outside and I suppose that says it all. When Jose's Cantina opened about 20 years ago, Mexican food was not that common and Americans up North were not very familiar. A lot has changes in 20 years. The arrival of so many Mexicans to the area means that there is a lot more Mexican food available. Americans have also become more familiar and discriminating about Mexican food. Unfortunately, Jose's hasn't kept pace with those changes. I started with a cup of chicken soup, which was good enough, but except for the garnish of tired cilantro, it didn't taste particularly Mexican. The salsa that was served with the chips was innocuous and bland. I ordered the chimichanga with chicken and salsa verde, It arrived promptly with a slice of some sort of cheese (it's square shape was still intact) just barely melted over the top with refried beans to one side and rice with two slices of anemic tomatoes and a lone half of canned black olive on the other - oh, and there were a few slices of pickled jalapenos too. The filling was unremarkable and bland and there was no sign of the salsa verde. Seriously? The prices are not cheap either. I'm just glad I didn't order anything more expensive, because I probably would have been really angry. This place is just plain tired - they clearly don't care any more. That's why it's a prime candidate for Kitchen Nightmares! C'mon Gordon!
