Uesugi Hot Spring Gotenmori

One of the most unique Ryokan's I've been to

Reviewed By Matan K

This place is amazing, it's a special Ryokan with a heart. Located in Akayu which has a shinkansen station, this place offers such a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere. They have massage chairs, amazing onsen, a room with video art dedicated to local Yamagata area folklore (very interesting!), and the best thing is the staff.

Yamagata the Takinami

Welcome to Takinami. This Traditional Ryokan has a 300 year history as the residence of a local, wealthy landowner. Over the years, the buildings have been renovated and today it operates as a traditional ryokan. Takinami has 19 guest rooms, these rooms have their own private open-air bath and toilet. Traditional Japanese cuisine is served to the guests at Takinami. Check-in time is after 3:00pm and check-out time is before 11:00am. Parking is available.

Good concept, but choose your room carefully

Reviewed By aferret

The Takinami is a nice blend between tradition and modernity: located in a historic building, but featuring contemporary furniture and a clean, minimalistic interior design with attention to detail. Upon arrival staff is rushing to your car, getting your luggage. You have various options for a welcome drink. If you wish, you can watch a traditional dance and afterwards observe how soba is made, thus check-in before 16h is recommended. Free coffee is available 24/7 and from 20h onwards you can enjoy a free selection of various Sake and liquors in the lounge area. Two bottles of water and two cans of beer are provided in your room free of charge. Staff and manager are very friendly and helpful. However, we were negatively surprised when we learned that our room didn't have a shower due to the cold weather, which basically downgraded the experience to a stay with shared bathroom. We could switch rooms for the next night, but this fact should have been communicated at time of the booking. Make sure you book a room with indoor shower, especially during winter time!

Sakurayu Sanshuyu

Another gem of a ryokan in Tohoku

Reviewed By KI-NRT

Sakurayu Sanshuyu was the top rated ryokan in the Tohoku region of Japan's Ryokan Grand Prix rankings, so we decided to find out for ourselves what the fuss was all about. We thoroughly researched the (Japanese) word-of-mouth feedback of this place, and were confident that we were going to have a delightful stay, despite a few notable shortcomings. First, I'll get the drawbacks out of the way. To begin with, it's a nondescript property located on the busy main street of the Akayu Onsen area, which itself is not particularly charming in the way that, say, Kinosaki Onsen is. When we walked through the main gate and into the main property, we noticed the lack of any proper garden on the grounds; in fact, the entire property is quite small. It doesn't give out an "oasis amid the chaos" vibe at all. Also, our room was nice, but the private yard had zero landscaping TLC whatsoever. There were weeds growing everywhere, which detracted from the otherwise enjoyable in-room open-air Onsen bath experience that we had. Finally, the furniture in the Western-style living room was not super comfortable - everything was heavily wood-based, and some of the cushions (such as the one used for the couch) were sort of afterthoughts. I understand why... Yamagata is known for its woodworking, so for the property to pay homage to local craftsmen makes perfect sense. But we felt they erred on the side of form over function in this case. On the plus side - and this is a big one for those that don't like sitting on the floor cross-legged - while the Japanese living room (where meals are served) is a tatami room, the area under the table is recessed so you can put your feet down and sit as if you're on a chair. Not only that, but the floor is heated, so your feet will be comfortably toasty. Even people who want an authentic Japanese experience (like us) do start feeling sore after sitting on the floor for an extended period of time. Sakurayu Sanshuyu's layout offers the best of both worlds in this regard. What about the positives? There were quite a few, and it's what made for a great stay here. The "Oyama Renge" special room was spacious at 80 square meters, and had a Japanese-style tatami living room, a Western-style living room as well as another room that served as the sleeping quarters at night (when they would roll out the very comfortable futons.) It's nice having two main living rooms because you can chill out and make a mess of one room while the other is used for dining purposes. Yes, all guests have meals served in the comfort of their own room, which is a dying breed, even among top luxury ryokans (labor is not exactly cheap in Japan, even in a place as remote as Yamagata.) Other positives include the wonderful open-air Onsen hot springs bath in our room, lightning-fast internet as well as some nice touches like the ability to choose wearing a Yukata (think casual kimono style) or Samue (sort of like PJs.) Two other minuses - the Yukata design is very monocolor and drab. It's gray... if you wore this while walking around town in Kyoto, you might get laughed at for your lack of fashion sense. Also, the minibar isn't free. That's not a significant drawback, but many luxury ryokans do not charge for drinks in the room. The kaiseki dinner is really where they spend their energy at Sakurayu Sanshuyu. The seasonal "Zensai" appetizers were delicious, unique and beautifully presented (including the raw Yonezawa Beef Nigiri)... I also paid 1800 yen extra to "upgrade" my main beef dish to an A5 Yonezawa Beef Chateaubriand, and it was well worth it. Japan is not all about Kobe beef, by the way, and Yonezawa beef is quite renowned throughout the country. The grated green peas soup with "Kani Shinjo" (Savory Crab Cake) was also a highlight. It was light but full of wonderful dashi flavor at the same time. The dinner pace was also ideal - at about 90 minutes total, we felt that it was just the right pace.... not rushed at all, and didn't drag on and on and made us yearn for it to be over with. While the meal overall was a highlight, we were disappointed with what they substituted for Mrs. KI-NRT (she doesn't eat red meat): It was Zuwai-gani Snow Crab, but it was obvious that it was frozen. It's not even in season, in fact. Since we informed them of her dietary restrictions months in advance, we would've thought that the kitchen staff could have found a more suitable substitute. For all of the negatives explained hitherto, one might thing we had a dreadful time. Far from it. Service was warm, professional and personalized - everyone had an elegance and finesse about the way they went about their work, and we especially enjoyed the company of our Nakai-san (female butler), a local person that engaged us in friendly conversation throughout our meal, and explained a great deal about Yamagata's history, traditions and culinary culture. The ryokan is also a very good value for a place that offers in-room meals and private open-air Onsen baths. While some may say "well, it's Yamagata, of course it shouldn't be expensive," we think just the opposite. It's because it is in Yamagata that it's a pleasant surprise to find such a high quality ryokan in the middle of nowhere. Let's just say that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It is not, however, a "destination property" like some reviews represent it to be.

Unforgettable 2nd stay

Reviewed By Aldous A

BTW, this is my second time stay at Morinoyu. First time is 2017 and I come again this year. This time we stay 3 nights. This place really silence and high private place. It is interesting that the origin of the hot spring just in front of the main entrance of the hotel. This is a good sign that it probably a real hot spring instead of filtration or re-cycle or re-heat hot spring. The food quality and presentation were found improved and it is elegant and good looking dishes. However, this review is found quite late since my visit at April. However, if you still miss a place after 3 months, a quarter. That means it is real good place.

Reviewed By YacchanAmarone

Reviewed By bochitabi

Reviewed By xenosys
