We stayed at Matabe Minshuku (B&B) and spent the following day exploring all of the artisan museums and eateries that this wonderful little village had to offer.
Husband and wife run hotel was incredible Japanese and inviting - Japanese even by Japanese standards: a thatched roof abode with 4 tatami mat bedrooms cum dining rooms once the local chicken hot pot specialty was served. Big thanks to Mr Matabe who ran a few hundred metres to greet us from the main road when we arrived late in the evening.
Following a hearty breakfast (numerous Japanese dishes and local delicacies made onsite), we ambled through the tiny streets amongst the movie-set like village houses, veggie plots, mini-temples and hunch-backed centenarians. Don't miss the Little Indigo Museum, the local history museum (a traditional house, with all the bits and pieces a farmer from yesteryear could ever want) and Cafe Milan - a micro cafe making their own custard pudding and selling local gelato - to die for.
Unfortunately the local rice flour bakery was closed but we were taught how to make soba (Japanese buckwheat noodles - a regional delicacy) by the head chef at the town's soba restaurant. This was previously organised by Mr Matabe for about $20/pp including the noodles served up for lunch, and for a handy take-away souvenir.
As classic and picturesque as this village is, it is authentic, and living and breathing. It's not set up for foreign tourist - we didn't see any except those on boutique tours or with a translator. For this reason, it's a hidden gem - and it's hard to find much in English about it on the web. The Japanese hospitality more than makes up for language barriers - just go. A very manageable 1.5 hour drive from Kyoto through windy pine and bamboo forest roads makes it a perfect one night stay.
There is an English-language website with some information (http://www.miyamanavi.net/english/), and Matabe's accommodation information is easily translatable with google translate (http://www.miyamanavi.net/s-ti0006/) and they're at [email protected].

Our tastebuds danced for like 1 hour! We ordered the Chicken Saag, Butter Chicken, Chicken Tandoori, garlic naan, samosas, saffron rice and even dessert. Every bite was delicious. The owners greeted us with kindness and were so proud of their restaurant. Was a fun experience and we may go back one more time before we leave. Might I add it was 100% authentic too.

Went here on Dec 26. We easily located this restaurant, having come from Arashiyama Sta. We arrived at around 1020am, wrote our name on the list (we were 5th) then briefly explored the Main Street. Got back by around 11:04AM, and were let in. Dining on tatami mat was a nice experience. Our lunch for 3 adults costed 10,200 yen, not bad considering the great quality of the meat and tofu that we had. We ordered the Murasawa beef (6200 yen), Flat Iron Steak 100g, and the Beef Tendon Set (1300 yen). Both steaks were very good—especially the Murasawa beef. It would be a waste to eat here and not order the murasawa beef (very soft and juicy, you only need chopsticks to slice it; comparable to the beef we have in Kobe). Beef tendon was sweet and had a bit too much fat for our liking, but the tofu from the beef tendon set was AMAZING (fresh, delicate, sweet). When in Arashiyama, steak lovers MUST TRY this place. Great value, memorable steak experience!
