Things to do in Takayama-mura
A tiny restaurant giving a lovely rest from the slopes... Great for a quick and delicious bite before heading back out; just grab a tray, order, pay and collect. Delicious katsu curry and katsu don and great coffee brewed by the boss. Great for warming up. Love it!

The town of Obuse is so well-known for it's chestnuts, so I didn't think we'd find anything other than that. San-Poo-Loh was a great discovery. We went just at the start of lunch and the restaurant soon filled up afterwards (it was a Saturday, after all). The restaurant opens from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. for lunch ... and after 2:15 p.m. it offers it's popular dessert - a huge Mont Blanc Cake. It looks like you have to reserve a spot - so, I'm guessing the cakes are limited. The restaurant is quite spacious and has many compartments, so you feel you have the area to yourself - it has a very modern atmosphere. A table by the window overlooks the main square, which was nice. They offer a lunch course for around 1600 yen (from what I can remember???). There are 4-5 choices complimenting a big fresh salad, freshly baked focaccia served with olive oil & salt, a full plate of desserts (the cream pudding was so rich and creamy) and tea or coffee. There was a selection of pizza; 2 pasta; a risotto dish & ???, to choose from. The volume is very filling, the freshness is wonderful. Each meal was carefully prepared and a great deal is placed on presentation. We each ordered a different choice and they were more than accommodating to supply extra plates, so we could share the dishes. They also have a menu in English.Definitely go on an empty tummy ...
You can enjoy local beef steak and sukiyaki, soba noodle, rice kamameshi, there are various other Japanese foods. You can also taste Japanese sake.
If you plan to visit the Snow Monkey Park, Hotaru-tei is a great choice for lunch. The restaurant is located between the walk route to the park entrance from the bus stop. It is about a 3 mins walk from the bus stop. This is the bus stop for the bus to/from Nagano station. Lovely architecture, nice spacious interior with a modern reception area. The food is good. Lunch set is ¥2,800~ . I had a slow lunch and comfortably timed my departure back to Nagano.

Koishiya is an actually hotel. (More like hostel with shared bathroom)I first booked this hotel but my parents wanted bathroom equiped in hotel, therefore I had to choose another hotel but I wanted to try cafe at least. (This hotel doesn't have hot spring, check their website closely)Although this is hotel (hostel), cafe is not open between lunch and dinner. What a shame ! Dinner is open from 1800 only. One of the staff here seems like having walking tour in English, it must be fun. I would have gone honestly !As I had already eaten Soba nearby, I stopped by here just for a glass of red wine, which is produced somewhere in Nagano prefecture. To my surprise, it wasn't bad ! I checked their menu, I honestly wanted to eat something, everything looks so unique and intriguing. They use special product from Nagano pref.Space is very cosy. If you stay over night here, most likely you will eat here and meet other guests in the restrant area. I admit that it is a very friendly place with lots of decoration.A staff showed me the shared bathroom on the ground level, it is really just shared bathroom with shower cubicle, don't expect any Japanese styled bathroom. Great thing about Koishiya is they accept credit card :)

Crumpet is a yeast and flour based traditional British bread snack, having crispy outside/fluffy inside in texture, and can be enjoyed as a savory/sweet with a variety of toppings. Opened in December, 2014 as the first crumpet specialty store in Japan at
We stopped here for breakfast first thing and it was the perfect way to start our day - we got the tuna melt and Granny Smith w/ cream cheese crumpets along with a latte and mocha and was pleasantly surprised at the quality espresso they have! The owner and employees were also fun to chat with. Being from Seattle, we compared it to the Crumpet Shop in Pike Place and it was very much on par with what we were hoping for! After talking with the owner, we realized he gained his inspiration from the Seattle shop and of course it made us even more partial to the establishment :) The whole atmosphere is great and they have some big tables with propane heaters in the middle that are super nice to warm up during your break. And when you step outside to the viewpoint, hopefully there's not a lot of clouds because the view is exquisite. Definitely visit this cafe during your visit to Shiga Kogen!

Enza Cafe is situated close to the famous Snow Monkey Park, it's the perfect place to relax and enjoy delicious local food, drinks and home-made desserts while surrounded by the beautiful sights of Nagano prefecture's mountains and trees.
We stopped here for coffee, tea and a bathroom break during our visits to the snow monkey park. On the second day, they were super nice to call a taxi for us to take us to the Yudanaka station.
